Area VII Shetland Pony & Miniature Horse Assoc., Inc.www.areaviiclub.com

The Area VII Shetland Pony & Miniature Horse Association, Inc., was incorporated on June 14, 1998 by the Board of Directors: President Marjorie Vliet, Director Virginia Flint and Director Jim Curry. It is and has always been member supported and driven, with

a dynamic group of people volunteering to run the club.

Area VII is an American Shetland Pony Club/American Miniature Horse Registry/American Show Pony Registry (ASPC/AMHR/ASPR) registered and recognized club that is primarily active in Cali-fornia, though our area encompasses California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. Our membership includes owners of both ASPC Shetlands and AMHR Miniature Horses. Area VII welcomes members from all over—and you do not need to own a mini or pony to join.

Area VII’s membership is spread across California and Nevada at this time, with members of all ages, with varied backgrounds and interests. Area VII is primarily a club for those that enjoy their Shetlands and Miniatures, with a particular interest in showing.

“We are an informal group of people of all ages who gather together for the enjoyment of friend-ships made, and the promotion of our beautiful equine. As members of this organization, we help maintain the recognition that our fine Shetlands and Miniatures deserve at the ASPC/AMHR level.”

Message from the PresidentBy Nancy Turner, 2014-2015 President

I am looking forward to the next meeting and swap meet on December 6 at the An-astasio’s Bellota Ranch in Escalon. It will be nice to see you all again. I was talking with the President of the Hooves and Wheels Driving Club in Mendocino County. They meet every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Highland Springs for a ride/drive and potluck. Their club meetings are every fourth Sunday. No shows, but then, no club expenses, either.

I would like to start making plans for next year’s events at our December meet-ing. We need dates for next year’s events when we renew our insurance. If we want official shows, clinics, playdays etc., we need to start working on them now. I talked to Kathy Thatcher about the rent on our club trailer that is kept at Ranchotel in Vacaville and use of their arenas. She said that the Sunday price for the indoor arena is the same as the outdoor arena: $200. Saturdays cost $300 for the indoor arena (because they use it for lessons). Pat and Linda Anastasio have offered the use of their new arena but parking of trailers would be limited. Clinics might be a better option. We certainly appreciate the use of their facility for our meetings. See you all soon.—Nancy

ASPC NEWS

AMHA Carriage Driving Classes Approved in CommitteeAt ASPC/AMHR/ASPR Convention in Dayton, Ohio, we were able to get the AMHR Carriage Class Division passed through the first approval step, in Committee, to make these classes sanctioned at AMHR Shows! Seven long years of goals and e ffort. Now they go to the Board of Directors for approval at the Spring Board meeting and, if passed at that level, will become official in 2016.

The American Show Pony Registry Committee was also successful in creating one carriage class for their division, and it passed as well.

The Classic Pony division will officially welcome the new revised class descriptions that went through this same process last year, in the 2015 rulebook.

We have support and excited energy from coast to coast, including Canada! We will continue to encourage show managers everywhere to add these classes to their show bills as non-rated during 2015. Judges’ clinics will be updated as to how these classes are judged, and we will be seeking qualified experts to attend the ASPC/AMHR judges’ clinic at Convention in 2015 so they are ready for 2016.

Thanks to everyone for all you’ve done to make this possible, and keep up the good work promoting and getting other people excited about what carriage driving offers. This brings the two organizations in even closer partnership as we go for-ward.—Diane Zmolek

It’s time to renew your membership for 2015!

Bellota Miniature Horse Ranch NewsThe weather is finally cooling off, and it’s time to reminisce about the past year.

Pat and I had a lot of fun competing in lots of horse shows, and even winning in some.Pat completed our arena, so we are now practicing and having fun with our

horses. We are already getting excited about next year’s horse shows! In September we took our granddaughter, Dakota, to Disneyland for a week, and

she was amazing. She kept grandma and grandpa busy, but smiling and happy the whole time!

Pat and I had a great time at the Santa Cruz County Fair! Pat did not compete, he was the groom for Jim Curry and me. What fun! Jim competed with JayMee, our Shetland, and I am not sure who had more fun, Jim or JayMee (or Pat!) They were all winners, and it was amazing to watch Jim show and drive! He is a true professional with a genuine love of the horses.

We are looking forward to some babies in the spring, and since we had no babies this year, we are both pretty excited. There is nothing sweeter then a baby foal! (Well, except a grand-baby!)

We have had two Area VII meetings at our house this year, and hope more people will attend the next scheduled meeting in December, which will also be a Tack Swap. We always have such a good time socializing, and good food! We hope to see many of you. We will be making plans for next year—events and clinics—so we need everyone’s support!

I took several lessons this year to learn to drive with Lisa Schmidt. She is great! She had such patience with me, and knowledge how to treat my horse. I look forward to more lessons, hopefully to gain some confidence when entering the show ring. Thank you Lisa, you are a great teacher!

Pat and I wish everyone a great winter with lots of rain.

Sincerely, Pat and Linda Anastasio

Megan and Voo on course at the Santa Cruz County Fair Pony Show.

Fall 2014 Page 9

Meadowlark Barn News: The Great Voo DebutAnticipation of a chance to show in Watsonville for Pony Day at the Fair was great this year in Meadowlark Barn. Not only would it be a chance to enjoy the heavenly feel of the cool fog and ocean breezes after months of hot summer days and nights, but it would be a chance to bring out the new pony, “DZ Voo Doo,” for his first points show.

Purchased last fall from Diane Zmolek’s Overlook Farm, Voo is a very sweet and kind bay pony that’s also easy on the eyes. He’s been a quick study and has picked up a pretty substantial skill set in a year. He did well in showmanship, halter, color, liberty, in hand jumping and in hand obstacle.

I’m particularly de-lighted that he went Grand Champion his first time out. I’m even more pleased that Voo and my natural horse-manship student, Megan, went out and gave a really great effort in jumping. Megan had never even seen a jump-ing class and Voo had never seen any jumps other than those in his back yard and I’m proud of both of them for

sticking with it and com-pleting the course with a few done with very nice form. If Megan decides to stick with this, they will make a great team. Voo loves to play ball and jump for “his girl.”

Voo and Megan and I each had our little blooper moments in the ring but we sub-scribe to the philosophy “It’s Never Win or Lose—It’s Always Win or Learn.” We came home knowing what we need to work on. I’m sure the pony will get more com-fortable with the show environment as his show career progresses and I know I can brush up my skills for sure!

Pretty unfazed by success, Voo is at home working on his skill set for driving and just hanging out with his “home boys” wearing fuzzy pajamas for winter. We really are looking forward to the show season in 2015.

It was great to see everyone and after three years away, being back in the show ring was a thrill.

See you out there next spring!—Sherry Ward

News from Jim Curry Well, quite a lot has happened since the last newsletter. I didn’t attend the AMHR Nationals this year, the first time I have missed it in several years. I actually spent my birthday at home. Pat and Linda took me out to dinner, and Linda baked me a chocolate birthday cake. We all ate so much that we didn’t want another dessert, so Linda sent the cake home with me, complete with candles! Which, I might mention, I did not want to count!

Normally I cannot attend the show at the Santa Cruz County Fair because I would be at the AMHR National Show. This year I was able to do so and had a great time. I had asked Pat and Linda at our last club meeting if I could show Jay Mee in the halter classes at the Fair. They agreed, and Pat offered to let me drive her as well. I jumped at the chance and traveled to Bellota every day the following week to work with her. Linda joined me in the arena, driving the mare she was going to show, and we both had fun practicing.

And it paid off! We both won every class we entered! The classes were on the small side, but good competition. I exhibited Jay Mee in 10 classes—halter and driving, including Roadster—and had a blast. Since I traveled with Pat and Linda we also went through the fair exhibits and ate lots of fair food. All in all a really en-joyable weekend. Linda took pictures and hopefully she will include some in their ranch news.

After the fair my next trip was to Fort Worth to judge the AMHA World Show. It was a five-judge panel and we adjudicated the Youth and Amateur classes for five days. The judges were from different parts of the country and from different horse backgrounds but we were pretty much in agreement on our choices. The hal-ter classes were not as large as those at the AMHR Nationals but the performance classes were larger and full of stiff competition, with splits in the driving classes required on several occasions. While the Supreme Halter Horse of the show was selected by the judges doing the open classes, it is worth mentioning that it was won for the fourth year in a row by a double registered Shetland! The same horse later sold at the Vermilyea Sale for a reported price of $62,000.

Michele is currently working on updating my Web site, among all her other activities and I invite everyone to take a look and see what is going on there.—Jim

Tomahawk Ranch NewsI got to go to one Scurry at Sargent Equestrian Center in August. Another couple with VSEs were there. I managed to disqualify myself by going off course most of the time. I did win a couple of blues in optimum time and one of courses. My minis would have done very well If I had pointed them in the right direction. I miss driv-ing in the CDEs (Combined Driving Events), but since I came down with my auto immune disease (that can cause strokes) I just can’t do the dressage and obstacle courses. The Northern California Driving Club (NCDC) came up with the Mature Old Ladies Driving Society aka M.O.L.D.S. a few years ago. I am a proud to be a life-time member, complete with a signed certificate!

I have been meeting up with my old high school “girl” friend and going driving in the local parks lately. Lynge Simoni, now Mrs. Groverman, has minis, married a lo-cal vet and now lives closer to me. Another long-time MOLD friend sold her ponies and minis and moved to Oakland. Sue Duffield helped me show my minis and Shet-lands at the Santa Cruz County Fair this year. It was a long drive but we do need to support Julie Mabie with this event.

Finally, got to visit Barbara Naviaux and see her appy foals from my appy stallion, Jackson. We went over to Dixie Baker’s to see her wonderful collection of pony- and mini-size vehicles. I brought home two of her mini training carts to sell, but wish I had more room as she has a very large selection of wagons, buggies and carts that for sale. If you do parades, costume or Touch of Class you will be very ex-cited when you see what she has to offer at very reasonable prices. If you are looking for minis or Shetlands, I have to cut down on a few of those myself.—Nancy Turner

Twin Oaks Ranch Miniature HorsesHere at Twin Oaks Ranch we’ve had a great year. We had four foals this season: three colts by Winners Circle Zeus that should have a promising future, and one filly by Samis Comin Atcha. The filly went to her new home on November 15th, and not sure yet which colt(s) we’ll be showing next year. They are all so nice.

The first colt, TOR Teddy’s Easter Parade, is so mellow that we may keep him for a gelding for our grandson. He is the sweetest little guy, and easy on the eyes, too!

The show season was pretty good. Started off good, until I took a fall in versatility and dislocated my shoulder, but that didn’t hold me down for long, and then we were off and running again! Both Samis Comin Atcha and DD Too Hots Silk NV went to Nationals and Worlds and did well—in the top ten! Samis Comin Atcha made his debut at Worlds in Single Pleasure Driving, 4 Year Olds and did awesome! Look for him next year to excel! Such a looker!

Hope everyone has had as great a year as we did, and Happy Holidays to everyone! Looking forward to next show year already!!—Carol Lima, Lakeport, CA

Whisper Equestrian Center NewsWow! How time flies!

The Santa Cruz County Fair was a great success. Thanks to all of the Area VII club members and other pony people who support this show. It was great seeing old friends and meeting new people. We hope this show grows in the future. If you missed it you can come next year. It was great seeing Jim Curry in the show ring again, too.

The Santa Cruz County Fair pony show is one of only three ASPC-sanctioned shows in California, and it is the only one in Northern California.

Fall is in the air here in Aptos. The barn is full of very expensive hay and the ponies have thick fuzzy coats. I am slowly getting the spring chores done, and the ASPC/AMHR convention in Dayton, Ohio is the first week in November.

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years—2015 will be here before you know it. I do hope we get some rain. Not only do we need the water, but I am look-ing forward to a nice cup of cocoa in a big chair with a warm fire in the wood stove.

Blessings to all, and if you are in the Monterey Bay area stop in and we can talk ponies and minis—Ken and Julie Mabie
