IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER
Defiance High School will hold parent-‐teacher conferences in October and November in an effort to keep you informed concerning your child’s academic progress. Conference nights will be held on Wednesday, October 30, from 3:00 – 6:00 pm, and on Monday, November 4, from 5:00 – 8:30 pm. All the conferences will be staged “arena style” in the cafeteria and the choir room. You may simply “drop in” anytime during the conference hours. The teachers will be arranged alphabetically around the cafeteria. Once you are there, you will be able to see which teachers have the shortest waiting line, and go to their waiting area. We hope that using this format will make it easier for more parents to see more of their child’s teachers.

“Under the Sea” - HOMECOMING 2013
In English, the junior class has been adjusting to the implementation of the new Common Core standards with readings from the Puritan time period. Special emphasis has been placed on The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible, a drama written in the 1950's, but which covers the infamous Salem Witch Trials of the 1690's. Along with the new standards there is a heavy emphasis on the sharpening of writing skills to prepare our students
for both college and careers in the 21st century. Lastly, many of the students are reading a minimum of 30 minutes every night.
The 2013 Defiance High School Homecoming activities will kick off with the annual pep rally and bonfire on the high school campus at 7:30 pm, October 17th. (Please note that the parade has been discontinued.) The crowning of the Homecoming Queen will take place before the football game with Van Wert on Friday, October 18th. This year's senior Queen candidates are: Amber Schindler, Danika Montgomery, and Jenna Retcher. The rest of the court includes: Gabi Lamb (junior attendant), Lexie Menendez (sophomore attendant), and Zoe Billings (freshman attendant). The Homecoming dance will take place in the high school cafeteria on Saturday, October 19th from 8:00-‐11:30 pm, and this year's theme is "Under the Sea". Tickets will be on sale during lunch the week of October 14th-‐18th. If your student attends Four County, they may purchase their tickets in the morning from Mrs. Haviland in room 210, beginning Tuesday, October 15th and for the rest of the week. The cost has not changed and will be $25.00 per couple or $15.00 for a single. Please remember that no tickets will be sold at the door. Students must arrive at the dance by 9:00 pm or they will not be admitted. If your student is bringing a guest from another school, please remind them to fill out the registration form available in the main office in ADVANCE.

Freshman..Avoid the Mistakes Here is a list of 5 common high school freshman mistakes as published in the college magazine Campus Explorer. See how many of these sound familiar or pertain to you: 1. Believing your freshman year doesn’t really count and you can improve your grades later. Remember… the numbers don’t care that you are a freshman and they never go away!!! 2. Sacrificing your grades for your social life. Social life is important. Good grade, however, are your ticket to getting into good post high school programs. High school is only 4 years…..your post high school education and or work path affects the rest of your life. 3. Missing homework and skipping classes. See above. 4. Failing to make up missed assignments. See number 3. 5. Not asking for help. There are so many resources for you to get help if you need it. Your teacher is the best place to start. Teachers are in the profession because of their desire to help students. Even if you don’t think they can help you, they can assist you in finding someone who can.
