Where is Class Today? First-year studies courses are designed, in part, to connect new students with the abundant resources of nearby Chicago. You’ll travel by train to Chicago with your first-year studies professor and visit one or more sites relevant to your course. For example, students taking New Media Art in Chicago visited the modern wing at the Art Institute of Chicago; those in Wild Chicago: Human Ecology in the Urban Landscape kayaked down the Chicago River; and students in Mu-sic Performance in Chicago went behind the scenes at Orchestra Hall, home to the renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

6 Continents 20 Countries 27 Cities

This year Lake Forest students will be studying in 27 cities around the world, from Sao Paulo to Beijing to Botswana to Athens to Washington D.C. Off-campus study provides our students with life-changing experiences that enhance their studies and give them a global perspective. Lake Forest also offers international internships.

“We know our students by name and prepare them to become responsible citizens of the global community.”

– from the College’s Mission Statement.

Not sure what career interests you the most? Want work experience to help you land a great job after graduation? College is the perfect time to explore professional areas of interest and to gain some experience to beef up that résumé. At Lake Forest, if you want an internship – you’ll get one. Our location near Chicago gives students many choices for internships in all areas. Some recent ones include the South African Consulate, Chicago Botanic Garden, Rolling Stone Magazine, Merrill Lynch, Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Sun-Times, US Green Building Council, City of Chicago, Illinois Holocaust Museum, and the Bank of China, among others.

Internships Give Our Students an Edge

a new “Caf” – the most recent addition to campus

We take our meals seriously at Lake Forest, which is why the new addition to the Hart Dining Hall, completed in August, was such big news on campus. Unlike at a lot of college campuses, students rave about the food here and there’s something for everyone, whether vegetarian, vegan, or meat loving. The newly renovated cafeteria boasts a Mongolian grill, brick pizza oven, fresh produce station, dessert table, and expanded seating areas.

what’S new on CampUS

Lake Forest has invested more than $50 million dollars in campus improvements in the last seven years; the new “Caf” is the latest addition with more projects on the horizon. Recent renovations include a state-of-the-art library, new student center, new sports and recreation center, and a new football field, among others.

“Lake Forest College has helped me mature in ways that would not have been likely had i gone to a larger university. i’m amazed at how qualified the professors are, but even more amazed at the amount of time they will spend with you outside of class. the connections i have forged with professors here have given me an advantage for my future plans of graduate school.”

– david Curie ’13

“i earned my phd at the University of Chicago and later taught there for three years. it’s a great school, but i wanted the opportunity to work more closely with undergraduates at all stages of their college careers. Lake Forest is a place where i can help students both find a passion and pursue it.”

– holly Swyers phdassistant professor of anthropology

Q. What are some of the opportunities for getting involved at Lake Forest?

a. When you first arrive on campus, make sure to attend the Fall Involvement Fair. You can sign up to participate in activities, attend meetings, go to events and become involved in a variety of ways. Organizations often host events, fundraisers, and meetings to help people get more involved. If there is something that you’re interested in, go for it!

Q. What would your advice be to help new students find their niche on campus?

a. Do things on campus! Get involved with a mix of organizations, go to the programs in your residence hall, invest in the campus community, and take the time to enjoy being a Lake Forest College student. There’s so much to do on campus, and I think that it’s incredibly important for students to do what they enjoy doing.
