Weekly Email Messages & Monthly Newsletters
from the Office of International Student
Services (OISS) As F-1 and J-1 student visa holders at Regent University, it
is your important responsibility to read the weekly email messages and
monthly newsletters from the Office of International Student Services
(OISS). These publications contain important immigration information
and updates that you will need to know in order to maintain your lawful
immigration status in the United States, so you are expected to read
them carefully. If for any reason you are not receiving the newsletters
(which will be sent to your local/U.S. address) or the emails (which
will be sent to your Regent email address), it is your responsibility to
notify the OISS immediately.
On-campus Employment Rule Reminder F-1 student visa holders are permitted to work on-campus
(at Regent) for no more than 20 hours per week in total
while school/classes are in session. One cannot work 18 hours one
week and 22 hours the next week. F-1 students do not need prior
written authorization for on-campus employment at Regent. Working
without proper authorization, or more than 20 hours per week in total
while school/classes are in session, is a serious violation of the F-1
student immigration status, which can result in serious consequences,
such as deportation. Any questions regarding employment should be
directed to the Office of International Student Services (OISS).
13
First-Time Health Insurance
Enrollment Procedures for NEW Students If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to complete the
online Health Insurance Enrollment/Application Form, which is
required of ALL new students to Regent who did not apply for a health
insurance waiver. You can do this through the link provided
here: http://www.regent.edu/admin/busoff/student_insurance.cfm
Click on “Insurance Application” at the bottom of the page. If you do
not have a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN), please enter all zeros
(0) in that field. As a reminder from the Orientation session, please be
sure to change your “Permanent Address” in Genisys to your local U.S.
address. This will help ensure that you will receive your health
insurance card when the cards are mailed to the new students in a
couple of weeks.
Information regarding the student health insurance costs, effective
dates, student and dependent eligibility, mandatory coverage statement,
enrollment and waiver forms, and deadlines can be found on this web
page: http://www.regent.edu/admin/busoff/student_insurance.cfm
Students will automatically be charged for the student health insurance
on their tuition bills. Only a few health insurance waivers are granted
each year, such as embassy sponsored plans. Waivers must be pre-
approved by Ms. Carolyn Hughes, Director of Student Life.
Dental Insurance is a separate policy and the dental enrollment
information is also online. The dental enrollment deadline is
mid-August.
Regent's student health insurance web page has a link to the Aetna
Student Health website where students can find benefit details, doctors/
providers in the network, and information about student travel
assistance (for travel in the U.S. or internationally). Students can also
register for “Member Web: Aetna Navigator”, which allows you to
view claims, print ID cards, find a doctor, and send email inquiries to
Customer Service. You can go directly to the Aetna Student Health
website at this link: http://www.aetnastudenthealth.com/

Getting Involved &
American Student Fellowship There are many offices on campus that provide
activities and services that help to foster international
and American student fellowship and friendship. One office that offers
such opportunities is the Office of Community Life. Director Roger
Cheeks organizes special off-campus outings each semester for all
students at Regent (such outings include the Festival of Lights trip and
the trip to MacArthur Center Mall). The Office of Community Life
also offers all students the opportunity to work side-by-side and to
serve the community through special volunteer service events. Other
offices offer social, cultural, and spiritual events and opportunities for
all students, such as the programming that is done by the Resident
Assistants in the Regent Commons (Student Housing). The Director
of Student Life, Ms. Carolyn Hughes, oversees intramural sports
events, such as soccer, flag football, basketball, ping-pong, etc. The
Office of Student Life also oversees the student organizations that exist
at Regent in order to foster community, fellowship, and leadership.
The OISS encourages all international students to participate in these
15
many opportunities at Regent. Getting involved with the campus
community and your fellow American students will help to enhance
your overall experience in the United States. For questions about these
activities and events, please contact the appropriate Directors or Offices
listed below: Mr. Roger Cheeks, Director of Community Life, 352-4486, [email protected]
