RECREATION PROGRAMS FOR THE PUBLICThe Community Services Department offers year-round programs that provide a full range of opportunities for life enrichment, self-improvement, personal growth, and artistic expression. Programs include swim lessons, day camp, leisure classes, parks, the Atlantis Play Center, birthday parties, youth and adult sports, excursions, and activities for senior citizens. Adults and children with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to fully participate in our classes, programs, and activities. If special accommodations are needed for you to participate in one of our recreation programs, please contact the Community Services Department at (714) 741-5200 two weeks prior to the start of a program.

The Garden Grove FOCUS Collaborative is a FaCT partner. It receives Federal and State funds and is administered by the County of Orange Social

Services Agency.

Services include:

The Magnolia Park Family Resource Center provides Garden Grove families with educational classes, recreational programs and activities, and assists families in need through the agencies in the FOCUS (Family Opportunities Creating Unity and Support) Collaborative. Services are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese, and most services are free or low in cost.

MediCal and Food Stamp Application AssistanceEvery Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The City of Garden Grove offers Passport Application Services through the City Clerk’s Offi ce, located on the second fl oor of Garden Grove City Hall, at 11222 Acacia Parkway.

Applicants must schedule an appointment to apply for passports by calling the City Clerk’s Office at (714) 741-5040. Appointments are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and alternating Fridays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.; and Thursdays between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

An original birth certifi cate or original naturalization form is needed for U.S. Citizens seeking to obtain passports. Passport photos are available through the City Clerk’s Offi ce for $10. All passport application fees may only be paid by cash or check. Passport renewal forms are also available.

Application forms, information on required documentation, fees, and other passport and international travel information are available at the offi cial passport information website, www.travel.state.gov.

Our teachers provide a program for preschool children, three, four, and fi ve years old, with an emphasis on socialization skills necessary for kindergarten and beyond. Combining stories, games, crafts, and playtime will help foster growth and development that will build a sense of self-worth, confi dence, and respect through a safe and positive experience. Each session will include a parent participation excursion to a local place of interest.

VOLUNTEER COACHES…WE NEED YOU!!!

Volunteers are needed to coach and/or assist with teams in our youth sports (basketball and football) programs. Without such volunteers these programs would not exist. If you have a few hours a week, enjoy working with kids, and know something about the game of basketball or football, please inform staff at the time of registration, or call (714) 741-5200.

Youth SportsMini Football$40 / childLocation: Hare School ParkAges: K - 2nd Grade

This program is for youth who wish to participate in an instructional program that emphasizes basic football skills using a safety cushioned football. This six-week program will begin Saturday, October 3, 2009, and instruction will be conducted each Saturday from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at Hare School Park. A special registration will be held on Saturday, September 12, at the Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center, 13641 Deodara Dr., from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. After that, registration will be taken at City Hall during normal business hours until Thursday, September 17. Each youth will receive a team jersey and a participation award.

This program provides youth the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of fl ag football and teaches fi tness with an emphasis on quickness and agility. A special registration will be held on Saturday, September 12, at the Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center, 13641 Deodara Dr., from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. After that, registration will be taken at City Hall during normal business hours until Thursday, September 17. Player’s skills testing will be conducted on Saturday, September 19 NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE TAKEN AT SKILLS TESTING. Each youth will receive a team jersey and a participation award. Competition will be held in three divisions. The program will begin on Saturday, October 3, and games will be played each Saturday at Hare School Park. (Some weeknight games may be played depending on enrollment.)

Youth Arena Soccer$50 / childLocation: Garden Grove Arena Soccer ParkAges: 18 mos+This program provides a fun and exciting environment for youth to learn the fundamentals of soccer and overall fitness. This eight-week program runs throughout the year. Registration is available at the Garden Grove Arena Soccer Park, Monday through Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. For additional information call 890-0259.

Adult SportsFall Adult Softball

League(Men’s Slow-Pitch)$490 / team ($45 late fee)Location: Garden Grove ParkMen’s slow-pitch softball leagues are forming now. Games will be played weeknights at Garden Grove Park. Registration is accepted on a team basis. Teams with the majority of players residing or employed in the City will receive priority in the event a night fi lls past capacity. The registration deadline is Thursday, September 10, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. The mandatory manager’s meeting is Tuesday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center, 13641 Deodara. Join us this Fall at the Wreck Hall Teen Center! For teens in middle school or high school, there will be great music to make “after school” a jammin’ good time. Bring your friends and be part of the coolest hangout in Garden Grove! No registration is necessary. The Wreck Hall is located at 12001 Saint Mark St. within Eastgate Park. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Teen Center has a lounge area, as well as a snack bar! Come by to play interactive video, board

games, read or relax! Watch for teen trips and special events. Best of all... most activities are free! Come and meet our outgoing Recreation Services staff,

make new friends, have some fun, and bring back some memories.

Atlantis . . . The legendary super nation sank beneath the waves of the sea about 3,000 B.C. The mystery of this legend inspired its re-creation in Garden Grove in the form

of a four-acre children’s play fantasy. Atlantis Play Center is where your adventure begins.

General UseAn admission charge of $1 per person allows visitors to enjoy this unique four-acre site. Children under two years are free and adults must be accompanied by a child.

Early or Late OpeningsArrangements can be made to have Atlantis Play Center opened one hour before or after regular operating hours for a fee of $15 per hour. This is available to schools and non-profi t organizations only. Reservations may be made up to six (6) months in advance.

Private Parties/PicnicsWhether for a private children’s party or family picnic, tables may be rented for a fee of $5 per table. A maximum of ten (10) tables may be rented per day. The Party Pavilion is also available for children’s parties for a fee of $25 per 45 minutes.

CATERED BIRTHDAY PACKAGEEnjoy a birthday party under the 60-foot wide Birthday Pavilion. This covered area replicates an inverted seashell resting upon nine Grecian columns and provides the central theme for birthday parties throughout the year.

Atlantis Play CenterBirthday parties are 45 minutes in length and are designed for children ages 3 to 9. The basic party package can accommodate 18 guests (including both children and adults). For an additional fee, up to six more guests are welcome.

The basic party package cost is $95, and includes the following:

The H. Louis Lake Senior Citizens Center is a wonderful facility that provides numerous leisure, educational, social, and recreational activities for senior citizens. As well as serving a hot lunch Monday through Friday, leisure activities include pool, cards, bingo, art classes, needlecraft, line dancing, sewing, exercise classes, Tai Chi, and much more!!

Publication of this schedule does not ensure enrollment to all who apply. The Community Services Department reserves the right to cancel classes because of insuffi cient starting enrollment or a decline in the enrollment after the class has started and to close further enrollment when a class is fi lled. If classes are canceled due to low enrollment, full refunds will be issued promptly.

Many classes have limited enrollment, and registration is taken on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. All individuals registering for courses must have reached the minimum age requirement prior to the fi rst class meeting.

There is a $5.00 processing fee for each refund. Refunds will be processed within 2-4 weeks.
