October 2012 1 FAITH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA Volume 2 Number 10 October 2012 The first Sunday in October is always a special Sunday for me as we join with our brothers and sisters around the world in observance of World Communion Sunday. In a world that is rife with unrest, mistrust, and religious intolerance, it is gratifying to realize that at least on this one Sunday, as we gather around the table here at Faith, Christians around the world are also gathering around the table of our Lord in their own culture and traditions. It is so easy to see how we are a part of the global church of Jesus Christ. And October also brings to a special time of year as we participate in our Stewardship Emphasis Season. And I use the word “emphasis” intentionally. The Stewardship Team and the Session will be seeking to create an atmosphere here at Faith where we view stewardship as a year-long and on-going part of our ministry. It is so much more than a four-week long season where we look at the budget, send out pledge cards, hear some testimonials, and I preach a few sermons on stewardship. No, stewardship is a part of who we are as disciples of Christ, and can- not be relegated to a few Sundays in the fall. One aspect of this effort will be a recommendation to the Session to separate the Stewardship Team (or commit- tee) and the Budget & Finance Committee. The Stewardship Team will consider more of the “big -picture” issues such as the spiritual side of stewardship, stewardship education for the congregation, and the on-going stewardship ministry. The Budget and Finance Committee will deal more with the “nuts and bolts” of the ministry – making sure our bills are paid, accurate reporting to the Session, taking care of our finances and other issues in this area. If you have any interest in serving on either of these two committees, please see me or Betty Rissmiller, who serves as the current chair of the Stewardship Team. As you can see from the logo below, we do have a theme for this special season: Becoming an EPIC Church: Joyful Response to God’s Generosity. The “EPIC” part of the theme is actually an acronym, and comes from the book The Gospel According to Starbucks by Leonard Sweet that our Tuesday evening group is studying. And EPIC is an acro- nym for: Experiential Participatory Image-Driven and Connected. And here’s how this will be presented during our four week season of stewardship: Sunday, October 14th: Becoming an EPIC Church: Experiencing God’s Generosity Sunday, October 21st Becoming an EPIC Church: Participating in God’s Abundance Sunday, October 28th Becoming an EPIC Church: Created in God’s Image / Fellowship Brunch - Steward- ship Luncheon following worship Sunday, November 4th Becoming an EPIC Church: Con- nected to God’s Family We have a full and exciting month ahead! GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA

Volume 2 Number 10 October 2012

The first Sunday in October is always a special Sunday for me as we join with our brothers and sisters around the world in observance of World Communion Sunday.

No, stewardship is a part of who we are as disciples of Christ, and can-not be relegated to a few Sundays in the fall.

One aspect of this effort will be a recommendation to the Session to separate the Stewardship Team (or commit-tee) and the Budget & Finance Committee. The Stewardship Team will consider more of the “big-picture” issues such as the spiritual side of stewardship, stewardship education for the congregation, and the on-going stewardship ministry.

And EPIC is an acro-nym for: Experiential – Participatory – Image-Driven – and Connected. And here’s how this will be presented during our four week season of stewardship:

Sunday, October 14th: Becoming an EPIC Church: Experiencing God’s Generosity

Sunday, October 21st – Becoming an EPIC Church: Participating in God’s Abundance

Sunday, October 28th – Becoming an EPIC Church: Created in God’s Image / Fellowship Brunch - Steward-ship Luncheon following worship

Sunday, November 4th – Becoming an EPIC Church: Con-nected to God’s Family

We have a full and exciting month ahead! Let us covenant to be in prayer together, seeking always to discern God’s will for His church.

See you in church!

John

Vision Team – Continues to meet – nothing major to report

Outreach – 150 pounds of food from the garden have been delivered to Partnership Village / Bonnie read a letter of thanks from them / Western Guilford High Football team will eat dinner (as in past years) here on September 21st / other options for connecting to Partnership Village were discussed and Laura will explore / “Trunk or Treat” to be held here at 5:30 on October 31st.

Worship – John went over liturgist schedule and other worship schedules for the coming month.

Congregational Care – cards sent to members in need / transportation ministry discussed and will be ex-plored in more detail

Discipleship – request has come from Elder I.E. Martin to offer an alternative Sunday school class for adults, beginning on October 14th / the class was approved, using our denomination’s Present Word curriculum / current adult class will continue in September, beginning a Before the Sermon series, using the same discus-sion-based approach based on morning text and sermon theme.

Administration – moving forward with music director search / budget request for ministry areas for 2013 still needed / other stewardship issues discussed, including upcoming Stewardship Emphasis Season / Tar Heel Chorus no longer using building / Korean School contract up for renewal

A Stewardship Prayer

In life and death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God

and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel

whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God alone

Who loves us and enriches us with abundant gifts. And so we will seek to move . . .

In attitude from scarcity to abundance In lifestyle from consumption to renewal

In finance from debt to freedom We worship God alone

Who empowers us to celebrate the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. And so we will seek to move . . .

In liturgy from avoidance to celebration In giving from funding to offering

In emphasis from annual to year-round We serve God alone

Who calls us to a life of thanksgiving to the Spirit, loving God, neighbor, and self. And so we will seek to move . . .

In practice from maintenance to mission In outreach from parochial to global

In relationships from domination to interdependence. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,

we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and live holy and joyful lives,

even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying “Come, Lord Jesus!”

Make your plans to join us for this exciting new outreach and fellow-ship event, as we “Trunk-or-Treat” with neighborhood children. Church members are invited to decorate the

trunks of their cars, come to the church parking lot, and distribute Hal-loween candy to neighborhood children who come through. There will be a bounce house for the children, smores to eat, and good fellowship as we try to get more involved in our community.

We will hold our Trunk-or-Treat on October 31st beginning at 5:30 pm. Mark your calendar and plan to come join the fun! More info will be coming later. Stay tuned!

Continuing in October, our Adult Sunday school class will proceed with our new look and new format as we go Before the Sermon. Led and facilitated by our dedicated team of teachers, each session will look at that particular Sunday’s scripture text and sermon to initiate

what will most assuredly be some lively and engaging discussion. Following the successful summer series going Beyond the Sermon, we will build on that structure but instead of looking at the text and sermon topic after worship, we will engage in discussion before worship.

Everyone is invited to take advantage of this unique opportunity to explore further our sermon topics each Sunday.

If you are a regular attendee of the class, we know you will enjoy this new format. If you have not been for a while, or have not previously participated, now is a great opportunity to give it a try! Join us each Sunday morning at 9:30 for a cup of coffee and a wonderful time of fellowship and learning.

We Presbyterians affirm the idea that Christian Education is a lifelong process. We can all learn some-thing more about this life of faith. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Take advantage – and grow!

We have begun work on our long-awaited pictorial directory! Pictures were taken at the July Fellowship Brunch, and they turned out great! We will be taking more pictures at upcoming Fellowship Brunches, so be prepared if you didn’t get yours taken in July. We are hoping to have this finished up in time to have the directory ready by the first of the year – or even sooner if we can get the things done that need to get done. Thanks for your participation, and your patience!

FAITH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Dear Faith Friends,

Missions of Mercy Dental Clinic is going to happen again this year on Nov. 16th and 17th. When the Dental Society grant came to an end we were not sure, but Lelia Moore, the coordinator of the Congregational Nursing Program, through her many contacts, raised the needed $57,000 to enable the clinic to happen one more time. Our part here at Faith is to collect 50 to 100 sets of dental hygiene items (individually wrapped tooth brush, tooth paste and dental floss) which will be given out to the participants in the dental clinic. Place your donation in the container under the Health Ministry Bulletin Board found in the Education wing hallway.

We have a new Social Work Intern, Diane Dunn who will be working with me. See her intro below. Please welcome Diane and make her feel at home.

Events:

Health Ministry Committee meets at 6:30 PM, October 1st in the Parlor.

Lois is in office on Tuesdays from 9 AM to 1PM.

Chair exercise is on Tuesdays at 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall. This class is open to all.

“The Cup of our Life” book study/discussion. Begins Oct. 2nd from 1:30 to 2:30 PM, books are free. See Lois.

COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT By

Betty L. Brewer Do you know why the blood test that is typically part of your annual physical is important? Your blood picks up all kinds of information as it flows throughout your body, with different components collecting and absorbing different details. That blood test can provide important information about your overall health and potential areas of concern. Then, of course, there are specialized blood screening tests which can be used for identifying or monitoring particular health concerns, such as diabetes or problems affecting particular organs of the body. These include “…blood chemis-try tests, blood enzyme tests, blood tests to assess heart disease risk, blood clotting tests…”. (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute) The typical blood test that is part of your annual physical examines your white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. There is a range of “normal” levels for each of these. As long as your test numbers fall within the normal lev-els, you and your doctor will be happy with the results. When the test numbers fall outside of the normal range for one or more the categories, then the doctor will use that information for further evaluation, to aid in diagnosing a condition and initiating appropriate treatment, as warranted. Note that abnormal blood test results are not sufficient to diagnose diseases; they are simply indicators of possible problems that require additional medical evaluation. When that evalua-tion confirms the presence of a medical concern, then the doctor will be able to determine appropriate treatment. Sub-sequent blood tests will be used in monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment. It needs to be noted that the “normal range” for each of these categories can vary according to age, ethnicity, and gender. So a white cell reading for a 60-year-old African American male may not be relevant for 22-year-old white female. (MayoClinic) “White blood cells are part of your immune system.” (MayoClinic) So one aspect of the typical blood test is a measure of your white blood cell count. These cells help to fight infections. There are different types of white blood cells and so the number and types of cells become important indicators of your ability to fight off infections. Your body can increase the number of certain types of these cells when it goes into infection-fighting mode. The numbers and types of cells are important information in this element of your blood count. “Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.” (WebMD) A low count can indicate anemia, meaning that the body is not getting enough oxygen. If the count is too high, it can also indicate that there is problem and that, again, your body is not getting enough oxygen. The test of the red blood cells focuses on the hemo-globin, a major element of these cells since it actually carries the oxygen. The third component measured in the complete blood count is the platelet count. These are “…the smallest type of blood cell.” (WebMD) But they perform a big role because they clump together and swell up into a mass to stop bleeding. When there are not enough of them, then bleeding cannot be controlled; too many of them can create “…a chance of blood clot forming in a blood vessel.” (WebMD) Your blood test can be affected by a variety of factors, including smoking, medications, diseases (diagnosed and undiagnosed), dehydration, infections, severe stress, iron deficiency, lack of folic acid or vitamin B12, alcoholism, and many other factors. Your blood test will be interpreted by your doctor based on your known medical history. Your blood test may be expanded to include screening for cholesterol and triglycerides, calcium, potassium, sodium and selected other elements at the request of your doctor. The most complete screen examines 20 items; some look at only 7 or 12 items. This will depend on your medical history. Many times the first indicator of a problem is found in the blood test. It is an important diagnostic tool for doc-tor and for your good health.

Healthwise Kids Can you image not having tooth paste, a tooth brush and dental floss to help you keep your teeth clean and feeling good? Can you imagine having a tooth that hurts so badly that there’s no way to get away from the pain? It may be hard to imagine but there are hundreds of people in Greensboro and in our state of North Carolina who don’t have the money to get dental supplies to clean their teeth and help them avoid getting cavities and when they do get a tooth ache they can’t afford to see a dentist to get help. On November 16th and 17th there will be a big dental clinic for those people who need dental care and can’t afford it. At Faith Presbyterian Church we will be collecting individually wrapped new tooth brushes, tooth paste and dental floss. Our challenge is to get 50 or more sets of dental supplies to be given to the people who are helped at the dental clinic. Maybe Mom and Dad will let you help pick out the color of tooth brushes and the kind of tooth paste and dental floss to contribute. You might even have friends who you could ask to help too. Remember how fortunate you are and take good care of your teeth too. See if you can fill in the name of the part of the tooth being described below. Have a great day.

Miss Lois
