All Saints celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who are the body of Christ. As November heralds the dying of the landscape in many northern regions, the readings and liturgy call us to remember all who have died in Christ and whose baptism is complete. At the Lord’s table we gather with the faithful of every time and place, trusting that the promises of God will be fulfilled and that all tears will be wiped away in the new Jerusalem.

MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH - NOVEMBER 2017
ALL SAINT’S SUNDAY AND WEDNESDAY Church Events
Faith In action
Dear People of Faith,
November is the month of Thanksgiving. I hope you will all plan to join Pastor Christine and me at the Annual Waconia Community Thanksgiving Gathering at Oakwood Community Church on Tuesday November 21st at 7:00 PM. Please note that the gathering is on the Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving again this year.
One of my favorite thanksgiving songs is a simple little song by Don Moen,
Give thanks with a grateful heart Give thanks to the Holy One Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son And now let the weak say, "I am strong" Let the poor say, "I am rich Because of what the Lord has done for us" Give thanks.
Many have written about the value of living with “an attitude of gratitude.” To name what we are thankful for, even in the midst of suffering, changes our hearts and minds. Giving thanks reorients us to God’s blessings, grace and care for us. So even the weak can say, “I am strong” and the poor can say. “I am rich.” Research has shown at least seven benefits of gratitude, Amy Morin wrote in Psychology Today:
1. Gratitude opens the door to more relationships. Not only does saying “thank you” constitute good manners, but showing appreciation can help you win new friends, according to a 2014 study published in Emotion.
2. Gratitude improves physical health. Grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and report feeling healthier than other people, according to a 2012 study published
in Personality and Individual Differences.
3. Gratitude improves psychological health. Gratitude reduces a multitude of toxic emotions, from envy and resentment to frustration and regret. Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher, has conducted multiple studies on the link between gratitude and well-being. His research confirms that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression.
4. Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression. Grateful people are more likely to behave in a prosocial manner, even when others behave less kindly, according to a 2012 study by the University of Kentucky.
5. Grateful people sleep better. Writing in a gratitude journal improves sleep, according to a 2011 study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being. Spend just 15minutes jotting down a few grateful sentiments before bed, and you may sleep better and longer.
6. Gratitude improves self-esteem. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology found that gratitude increased athletes’ self-esteem, an essential component to optimal performance.
7. Gratitude increases mental strength. For years, research has shown gratitude not only reduces stress, but it may also play a major role in overcoming trauma.
So let’s give thanks with a grateful heart for all that God has done for us.
Thanks! Pastor Dale

remarkable true story of a man who lived alone in the woods of
Maine for 27 years, making this dream a reality—not out of
anger at the world, but simply because he preferred to live on his
own. (Goodreads.com)

Tuesday Bible Study News
The Tuesday Bible study will be starting a new unit on October 31, the Gospel of Mark. This gospel was the first gospel written and is very fast paced. Mark presents a vivid picture of the actions of Jesus to prove his identity as the Messiah. We will spend about 6 weeks on this gospel. In December, we will be doing two very special lessons just for Christmas. Everyone is welcome to join us when you can. We meet each Tuesday morning at 9:15 am at Westview Acres or Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm at Faith. Choose the time that works best for you and join us. For more information contact Mary Westlund at
WACONIA FOOD SHELF HOLIDAY DONATION OPPORTUNITY
In November and December, the Waconia Food Shelf distributes special foods to their families, hoping to make their holiday meals as special as possible. In November, we collect food that would be part of a “traditional” Thanksgiving meal and distribute Thanksgiving bags filled with these foods, plus a coupon to use toward a small turkey from Mackenthun’s. Approximately 200 families receive these bags. In December, we hope to purchase ham or an alternative meat for their Christmas meal. We invite you to participate in this effort by donating food items for the Thanksgiving Bag project: boxes of potato flakes and stuffing, cranberries, gravy packets, large boxes of jello and cans of mixed fruit, and pumpkin and evaporated milk. Monetary donations will be used to purchase the needed frozen items and the meats. Checks may be made directly to the Waconia Food Shelf. The grocery cart will be available to deposit grocery items; look for it in the gathering space. Checks may be put in the offering plate or in the box on the grocery cart. Thank you for helping to make the holidays happy for the families
using the food shelf!
This year’s Community Thanksgiving Gathering will be at
Oakwood Community Church 8805 Klein Dr, Waconia, MN 55387
at 7:00pm on Tuesday November 21st.
Faith Lutheran will be reaching out again this year to help those in need with our Giving Tree Program. In 2016, we collected over 600 gifts and personal items for clients of the CAP Agency, The Waconia United Food Shelf, and Redeemer Lutheran Church. Let's do it again!
Gift requests/ornaments will be available starting Sunday, November 12th, and
Wednesday, November 15th. Look for the Christmas tree in the gathering area to sign up to help.
Your generosity was deeply felt by hundreds of people last year. Thank you in advance for your kindness. commitment to If you have any questions, please call Angela Rud at 952-451-3343. Thank you!
THANK YOU to the 76 volunteers that filled 110 volunteer slots during our last hosting! We had 19 BRAND new volunteers!! Faith is making a difference in the lives of families experiencing homelessness in Scott and Carver Counties through the Families Moving Forward ministry because of the generous time and resources contributed by so many helping hands! We grow in faith as we serve!
We started off the week with 3 families totaling 12 people. We added a 4th family Friday night that brought our total to 16 guests. All of our families enjoyed joining the Fall Festival activities. Many of our guests had never seen or pet a horse, so that was a treat!
Our next hosting is November 26 - December 3.
Many people wonder “why do we host so close together?” Each year the leadership team for FMF from Faith and the Faith staff look at the calendar and decide which weeks will NOT work for us -- looking at holidays, community events, the school calendars and leadership team family commitments. We give those dates to the Beacon/FMF staff and they then assign us weeks to host. We “black out” many weeks in the spring, summer and fall, which leaves us hosting closer together during the school year.
Our next hosting is November 26 - December 3. Please check the links below to sign-up for volunteering and providing supplies.

November Mission Offering:
Families Moving Forward FMF Southwest serves families in Carver
and Scott Counties that are experiencing
homelessness. Last year FMF SW received
100 calls from families that were in need of
shelter. A 2015 point-in-time count in
Scott and Carver counties identified 44
homeless families with children on a single
January night – the need is great, and the
work we do here at Faith to support this
ministry gave 20 families with 45 children
the support they needed to find affordable,
sustainable housing in 2015 . Questions?

On Sunday, November 12th, all 5th and 6th graders are invited to enjoy pizza and a movie in the youth room at Faith. Entry fee is only $5 to help defray the cost of food.
Come see Disney’s “Big Hero 6” with us! Robotics nerd Hiro Hamada discovers an inflatable health care robot, Baymax, created in the past by his brother, Tedashi. After a terrible life-changing accident, Hiro and Baymax team up with four other nerds to become the “BIG HERO” and save their home town San Fransokyo from an evil super villain trying to take over with Hiro’s invention.
Making a Difference ~ Feeding the Hungry An act of kindness need not be a huge
one to make a difference. The Sandwich Project Minnesota is a homeless ministry for Minneapolis and surrounding area. The Sandwich Project was started with a goal of feeding 150 hungry people in Minneapolis as many times a year as possible. Today they are feeding over 4500 people per week through various shelters and food shelves! That’s a total of 400,000 sandwiches needed. The youth of Faith will be helping make sandwiches for this project during November: the BYG Group (5th and 6th grade) on Wednesday, November 15th, the IGNITE Group (7th and 8th grade) on Wednesday, November 29th. The goal for each of these groups is to make 1,000 sandwiches trusting that 1,000 hungry people will be fed by our volunteer efforts. Supplies needed include: white bread, lunch meat, cheese,
In watching the “Big Story” unfold, the children and their audience alike will discover that the birth of a Savior at Christmas is not only good news for the world . . . it’s good news for them too! In order to get the scoop, our reporters follow up on a “tip” of a big, big story that’s about to take place. In doing so, they meet up with: * A camera shy star; * Angels who consider themselves “announcers” in the reporting business; * Wiseman in search of a twinkling celestial body; * Shepherds with “baaaad” jokes; * A child with a red ribbon on the finger – “trying to remember something.” Practice CDs of songs will be distributed at SPARK. Children who wish to have solos or speaking parts, please respond to an email to be sent from Mary T. Rehearsals will take place during SPARK (beginning November 19th for Sunday SPARK, and November 29th for Wednesday SPARK). There will be one dress rehearsal in the sanctuary the week of the program. The musical is for children in 1st—4th grade. Preschool and Kindergarten children will share songs and finger plays on the same day. All SUNDAY Spark Students — December 17th @ 10:00 am Rehearsal for all at 8:30 am WEDNESDAY Spark — December 20th @ 6:00 pm Rehearsal at 5:00 pm
sandwich bags, and plastic gloves. Donations for the project would be much appreciated. Monetary donations will work best. The cost per sandwich is approximately $0.67.
Through the sacrament of Holy Communion, Christians have given thanks to God ever since Jesus first shared this sacred meal with the disciples. Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ given and shed for you. Our sins are forgiven, and our daily lives are nourished through this wonderful meal. At a workshop designed for parents and children together, the children will hear the teachings of the church on Holy Communion. They will have the opportunity to help bake the bread and make their own cup for their own First Holy Communion. Children and their parents make the decision when to enroll. Generally, children are ready for instruction when they start asking questions about their faith and Holy Communion. Children have been as young as 1st grade and as old as confirmation age, but usually the class ages range from about 3rd – 5th grade. To prepare children to receive Holy Communion for the first time, families are encouraged to choose which workshop date works best for the family. Classes are offered once during Advent, and once during Lent. FALL Workshop: Thursday, November 16, 2017, 6:30 – 8:00 pm for children receiving First Communion either Wednesday, November 29th at 6:07 pm, or Sunday, December 3rd at 8:30 or 10:00 am. SPRING Workshop will be during the month of March, date to be determined.

Youth and Family Successful 7th and 8th Grade Retreat!
This October, the
7th and 8th graders
had a weekend
retreat at Camp
Friendship in Annandale, MN.
It was wonderful! After dinner
on Friday evening, Pastor Dale
taught us about why we pray.
We also had a “Prayer Circuit”
set up, with several different
stations, each explaining a
different way to pray. A few of
these stations included a guided
prayer with Pastor Dale, a
prayer vigil, and a Jenga Prayer!
It was great for me to see all
the students discussing which
prayers were their favorites
and which prayers were
challenging for them. On
Saturday, Pastor Christine,
Cory, and I taught the
students about The Lord’s
Prayer and what it really
means when we recite that
prayer. Finally, to finish off
the retreat, the students
participated in different team
building exercises and games!
I have to say a huge “Thank
you!” to all of the Ignite
guides that helped make this
retreat so successful! I am also
very thankful for the great
group of students we have
here at Faith. Their
willingness to learn and have
fun made the weekend an
absolute blast. Ignite is off to
a great start!
