Sisters and Brothers in Christ -
It's great to write one of these as your called pastor! I was pleased and gratified that Faith Lutheran Church decided to call me as their pastor on May 19
th. There
is a mutuality to the relationship between a pastor and the congregation they serve. I'm going to share a bit about that.
The installation of a pastor in a congregation (and I was installed back in 2016) reminds us that followers of Christ are sent into the world as bringers of peace, to love and forgive (John 20:21 – 23). Pastors are tasked with making disciples, teaching and baptizing in accord with Christ's command (Matthew 28:18 – 20). Here's the verbatim of the 1
st Timothy exhortation:
“Set the believers an example in speech and conduct,

in love, in faith, in purity. Attend to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.” (1
st Timothy 4:12 –
16).
Recognizing that the call stems from the Holy Spirit (flowing through the congregation and minister) the pastor is expected to teach and preach in accordance with the Holy Scriptures, the Confessions of the Lutheran Church and constitutions. I am told to be diligent in my study of Scripture and the use of the means of grace, to love, serve and pray for God's people, nourish in word and sacrament and be a faithful example. I am told to be a witness in all I do, so that God's love may be known in the world.
As I said, there is a mutuality. The congregation promises (y'all promised back in 2016) to receive the pastor as a messenger of Christ, sent to serve all people with the gospel of hope and salvation. The congregation promises to pray for the pastor, help and honor them for their work's sake, and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Christ.
We have worked to live up to those vows over the past three years. There have been wonderful ways that I have seen the Holy Spirit move through your community, a mutuality and outpouring. We've had moving worship, I've been blessed to share with you baptisms and funerals, Sunday school and bible studies, fellowship events and stewardship dinners, songs and tables, laughter and sorrows. I am glad that we have renewed our commitment to each other. Let us continue to work in the peace and unity of Christ.

Pentecost (Starts June 9th)
The Christian holy day of Pentecost, which is cele-
brated on the seventh Sunday after Easter, com-
memorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the
Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ
while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast
of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles
(Acts 2:1–31).In Christian tradition, this event repre-
sents the birth of the early Church.
Synod Assembly Review May 10 – 12
The Oregon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America gathered for assembly during the above dates. Faith Lutheran Church sent Cynthia Bonneville, Carrie Chamberlain and Pastor Mark Bringman. The assembly began with worship and then moved to business. We passed resolutions and memori-als (among others, emphasizing working with the Poor Campaign, area ministries including Mid Valley Latino Ministries and encouraging the adoption of the Women and Justice Social Statement (more on this later on in the newsletter). We passed a synod budget, recognized that giving was (slightly) up for this year. We heard from part-ners in ministry such as Camp Lutherwood, and Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Services, heard re-ports from the Bishop, Vice President (who operates a role similar to council president) etc. We also elected a new bishop. Bishops serve for a six year term and are allowed to be re-elected (some synods have term limits, Oregon does not). We have a new Bishop elect, Laurie Larson Caesar who will start as bishop in about two months. We pray for her and our current bishop, David Brauer Riekke, thankful for the service of both.
Did you know that our denomination had social statements? Every churchwide assembly (which occurs every two or three years) we work on, finalize and approve a statement. These statements are a Lutheran theology of difficult issues: on things such as caring for the creation or genetics or the death penalty. You can find social statements here: https://www.elca.org/Faith/Faith-and-Society/Social-Statements You can find on the proposed social statement on women and justice here: https://www.elca.org/womenandjustice
Prayer Chain
We are asking anyone in the prayer chain to lift up the concerns of Faith Lutheran Church weekly (which could be as little as taking a few seconds and asking God to be with all of those concerns and as much as lifting them up by name) and to pray for other concerns as they are shared. Alice Weber is heading up the prayer chain. If you are interested send her an email: [email protected]
