A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

11 SEPTEMBER 2001 – 11 SEPTEMBER 2014 (WHAT LESSONS HAVE WE LEARNED IN THIRTEEN YEARS?)

This past Monday (8 September) as the Church celebrated the Nativity of Mary the Mother of God, and our own Sister Dorothy celebrated fifty-seven years of Religious Life with help at Our Holy Redeemer from the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, (ladies please call Diana Gibson at (516) 623-2185 and join today), millions of boys and girls in America entered into their first full week of school. Across the nation children were taught lessons in Human History, Language, Literature, and the Arts. They were taught lessons in Philosophy, Religion, Economics, and Geography. They were taught lessons in Social Studies, Biology, Physics, and Mathematics. And although the first full week of school for them has only recently ended, their teachers and parents are already asking them: “what lessons did you learn?”

This past Thursday (11 September) Americans entered into the remembrance of a day that Pope Saint John Paul II called “a dark day in the history of humanity, a terrible affront to human dignity”. Thirteen years removed from those terrorist attacks which took the lives of thousands of innocent human beings and caused unspeakable sorrow in the hearts of all men and women of good will, we all could (and should) ask ourselves that same question: “what lessons have we learned”?

In order to answer that question we need simply to ask a few others. They’re not however, the questions you might expect; questions about

Homeland Security, Airport Safety, and Securing our Borders. Those questions are important, and they must indeed be asked, but whether or not we’ve learned our lessons from the terrorist attacks which brought death and destruction to America on 9/11 can be determined from a different line of questioning:

When I woke up this morning, did I acknowledge the Presence of God and pray?

Before I left the house this morning did I tell my wife and my children that I love them?

On the way to work today did I relinquish my seat on the railroad to the elderly, or if on the LIE, did I graciously allow traffic to merge?

At work, did I give my employer the best that I had, and my employees a wage that is just?

Upon arriving home from work did I, in view of the events of this day thirteen years ago, call my brother, forgive him from my heart, and let go of the grudge that seeks to attack and destroy brotherly love?

And when I lay myself down to sleep, will I pray the Lord my soul and the souls of my family and fellow Americans to keep?

Answer “Yes” to these questions and then we can honestly say that we have learned our lessons. Answer them “No”, and then maybe it’s time for us to go back to School.

“Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say.” (Pope Saint John Paul II)

GRATA RECORDATIO

ENCYCLICAL OF POPE JOHN XXIII

ON THE ROSARY: PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH,

MISSIONS, INTERNATIONAL AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS

26 SEPTEMBER 1959

(Continued from 7 September 2014 bulletin)

An Unbroken Succession

7. One pope bequeathed, as it were, to another pope, as a sacred legacy, the care of the whole Christian flock; with the same pastoral concern each of them declared his paternal love for all mankind.

8. These two events—the one full of sorrow, the other full of joy—attest clearly to the world that while all things human gradually decline and decay, the Roman Pontificate withstands the rush of centuries, even though the visible Heads of the Church must, one after another, leave this mortal exile as they complete the span of days which God in His providence has set for them.

9. But all Christians should turn their thoughts to the late Pope Pius XII and to his lowly successor, in whom Blessed Peter continues his eternal mission as supreme pastor, and they should address this prayer to God: "To preserve in holy religion the Pope, and all clerics in holy orders, we beg Thee hear us."

(To be continued …)

BY: POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II

“I cannot begin this audience without expressing my profound sorrow at the terrorist attacks which yesterday brought death and destruction to America, causing thousands of victims and injuring countless people. To the President of the United States and to all American citizens I express my heartfelt sorrow. In the face of such unspeakable horror we cannot but be deeply disturbed. I add my voice to all the voices raised in these hours to express indignant condemnation, and I strongly reiterate that the ways of violence will never lead to genuine solutions to humanity’s problems.

Yesterday was a dark day in the history of humanity, a terrible affront to human dignity. After receiving the news, I followed with intense concern the developing situation, with heartfelt prayers to the Lord. How is it possible to commit acts of such savage cruelty? The human heart has depths from which schemes of unheard-of ferocity sometimes emerge, capable of destroying in a moment the normal daily life of a people. But faith comes to our aid at these times when words seem to fail. Christ’s word is the only one that can give a

response to the questions which trouble our spirit. Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say. Christian hope is based on this truth; at this time our prayerful trust draws strength from it.”

FAITH AND EDUCATION "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you."

SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road)

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL (516) 379-8660

For baby boomers growing up in the 50s family references to the attack on Pearl Harbor were comments on a tragic pivotal day in the past. For those who were old enough to recount where they were on 7 December 1941 the event had a different significance than it did for those who just read about it, were told about it, or saw black and white photos of the devastation. The tragic events of 11 September 2001 likewise are known

to some by story and to others by memory. For the students of The De La Salle School, almost all of whom were born after that date and the majority of whom have parents who were not in this country at that time, the attacks of thirteen years ago are as distant as “the day that will live in infamy” from 1914.

In our role as educators we chose to make this aspect of our recent history more clear this year. The eighth graders prepared and let a memorial service for the school community and invited guests. We commemorated the lives lost, the heroism displayed, and the generous service associated with 11 September 2001. And we prayed for peace.

Marine Colonel Daniel J. Lund, Commander of Forward Operating Base Camp Bucca during operation Iraqi Freedom was a special guest at our school. In the context of a prayer service planned and carried out by the eighth graders he presented the school with an American flag that flew over Base Camp Bucca five years ago, on 11 September 2009. The entire school community assembled around the flag pole as the “Stars and Stripes” which once flew over the Iraq desert was raised in our parking lot. Also in attendance were veterans of various branches of the armed services as well as firefighters and police officers, some of whom had been first responders at the World Trade Center site in 2001.

“Remembering those who passed was a nice thing”, said Kenneth, one of the eighth graders leading the commemoration. Fellow eighth grader Orlando, reflecting his hope for the world commented, “It was good to work together on this project.”

O God, Who adorned the Bishop Saint Robert Bellarmine with wonderful learning and virtue

to vindicate the faith of Your Church, grant, through his intercession,

that in the integrity of that same faith Your people may always find joy.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

The literal explanation of the first Word,

"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." “Christ Jesus, the Word of the Eternal Father, of Whom the Father Himself hath spoken, "Hear ye Him," and Who hath said of Himself, "For One is your Master, Christ," in order to perform the task He had undertaken, never ceased from instructing us. Not only during His life, but even in the arms of death, from the pulpit of the Cross, He preached to us words few in number, but burning with love, most useful and efficacious, and in every way worthy to be engraven on the heart of every Christian, to be preserved there, meditated upon, and fulfilled literally and in deed. His first word is this, "And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Which prayer, as though it were altogether new and unheard of before, the Holy Spirit wished to be foretold by the Prophet Isaias in these words: "And He prayed for the evil doers." And the petitions of our Lord on the Cross prove how truly the Apostle St. Paul spoke when he said: " Charity seeketh not her own," for of the seven words our Redeemer spoke three were for the good of others, three for His own good, and one was common both to Himself and to us. His first care, however, was for others. He thought of Himself last.

Of the first three words which He spoke, the first was for His enemies, the second for His friends, the third for His relations. Now, the reason why He thus prayed, is that the first demand of charity is to succour those who are in want: and those who were then most in want of spiritual succour were His enemies; and what we also, the disciples of so great a Master, stand most in need of is to love our enemies, a virtue which we know is most difficult to be obtained and rarely to be met with, whereas the love of our friends and relations is easy and natural, increases with our years, and often predominates more than it ought. Wherefore the Evangelist wrote, "And Jesus said:" where the word and shows the time and the occasion of this prayer for His enemies, and places in contrast the words of the Sufferer and the words of the executioners, His works and their works; as though the Evangelist would explain himself more fully thus: they were crucifying the Lord, and in His very presence were dividing His garments amongst them, they mocked and defamed Him as a seducer and a liar; whilst He, seeing what they were doing, hearing what they were saying, and suffering the most acute pains in His Hands and Feet, returned good for evil and prayed; " Father, forgive them."

He calls Him "Father," not God or Lord, because He wished Him to exercise the benignity of a Father and not the severity of a Judge; and as He desired to avert the anger of God, which He knew was aroused at their enormous crimes, He uses the tender name of Father. The word Father appears to contain in itself this request: I, Thy Son, in the midst of all My torments have pardoned them; do you likewise, My Father, extend your pardon to them. Although they deserve it not, still pardon them for the sake of Me, your Son. Remember, too, that you are their Father, since you have created them, and made them to your own image and likeness. Show them therefore a Father's love, for although they are wicked, they are nevertheless your children.”

FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS

Collect

O God, Who in Your inscrutable providence will that the Church be united to the sufferings of Your Son, grant, we pray,

to Your faithful who suffer for Your Name’s sake a spirit of patience and charity, that they may be found

true and faithful witnesses to the promises You have made. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

“So must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (See John 3:13-17). “Today’s feast celebrates a double anniversary. In Jerusalem, Constantine erected around church, the Anastasis, above the empty grave of Jesus, and a basilica, the Martyrium; in the square between the two churches, a shrine, Calvarium, marking the place of the crucifixion. Dedicated in 335, they were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The two churches were rebuilt by Patriarch Modestus of Jerusalem c. 626, but were later destroyed by the Muslims in 1009. The present church of the Holy Sepulcher, rebuilt by the Crusaders, was dedicated in 1149. Today also commemorated the discovery of the Lord’s cross by the empress, St. Helena (From The 2014 Order of Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours and Celebration of the Eucharist, page

197). From today’s feast we also learn that the cross is the place of exaltation. Thus, we as Christians, together with all of our saints and our Blessed Mother Mary, accept the crosses life may send us knowing full well, that this place of sorrow becomes as it did in Jesus’ case, the place of exaltation. Amen.

I Corintios I: 23).

(vea San Juan VIII:32)

Por Favor Ore por Nuestro Seminaristas:

Hermano Pierre Toussaint Sr. James Hansen Sr. Odalis Rodríguez (Alain) Guiteau, C.F.R.
