QNo.3: Write an application to the Principal of your college requesting him/her to grant you character certificate.

Answer: The Principal,

Government College,

(City) A.B.C.

Subject: Request for the Issuance of the Character Certificate

Sir,

It is respectfully stated that I passed my Intermediate examination from your college two months ago. I

got 925 marks out of 1100. Now, I am to apply to some university of China for MBBS. For this purpose, I need

a character certificate.

Sir, I have always been brilliant student and obedient to my teachers. I was also an active participant

in co-curricular activities. I was the President of “English Literary Society.” I won distinction for college in

badminton and in English Speech Competition. Above all, I have never been a cause of indiscipline in the

college.

I shall be very thankful to you if you issue me the character certificate and mention all these in the

certificate.

Yours obediently,

X.Y.Z.

Q.No.4: Write a story on the moral: “Slow and steady wins the race.” OR “Honesty is the best policy.”

THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE

Story telling is as old as man. It has been one of the greatest sources of preaching moral values because every

story is written with some moral purpose. All the prophets, the saints, religious scholars and teachers have been

adopting it as a source of preaching any kind of morality. If one follows the lesson preached in the story, one can

avoid many perils and problems. The story “The Hare and the Tortoise” also gives us a sublime moral lesson.

Once, a hare and a tortoise lived in a jungle. The hare often laughed at the slow speed of the

tortoise. One day, the tortoise took it ill and challenged the hare to run a race. The hare accepted it.

They fixed their winning point and started to run. The hare made long jumps. Soon, he was out of sight.

On the way, he stayed to take some rest. On the other hand, the tortoise continued his journey, passed

by the hare silently and reached its destination. But when the hare awoke, he ran towards the

destination. But when he reached the destination, the tortoise was already there. After this, he never made

fun of the tortoise. We learn from the story, “Pride hath a fall.”

OR THE WOODCUTTER AND HIS AXE

Story telling is as old as man. It has been one of the greatest sources of preaching moral values because every

adopting it as a source of preaching any kind of morality. If one follows the lesson preached in the story, one can

avoid many perils and problems. The story “The Woodcutter and His Axe” also gives us a sublime moral lesson.

Once, a poor woodcutter was cutting the wood on the bank of a river. Suddenly, his axe fell down into

the river. He became sad and began to weep. Suddenly, an angel appeared there and asked him the reason of

his weeping. He told him the whole story. The angel dived into the water and brought out an axe of gold. The

wood cutter refused to accept it. He dived again and brought out an axe of silver. The woodcutter again

refused to take it too. The angel dived again and brought out an axe made of iron. The wood cutter became

happy and cried with joy, “It’s mine.” The angel became happy with his honesty and gave him the other two

axes as a reward for his honesty. It is true to say, “Honesty is the best policy.”

Q.No.7: (a) Explain the following lines with reference to the context. (5)

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance And watch her feet how they can dance

No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile, her eyes began

Answer:

Reference: These lines have been taken from “Leisure” written by William Davies.

CONTEXT: In this poem, the poet condemns the modern life of the modern man. He says that

the modern man is so much absorbed in his materialistic pursuits that he ignores the natural

beauty around him. That's why, his life is poor. He must find some time to enjoy the

beautiful sights of nature.

Explanation: In these lines the poet has personified "Beauty" in the form of a beautiful girl who is

smiling and is ready to dance. It is a fascinating sight. It may fill our heart with pleasure and

delight. But, the modern man is unfortunate because he has no time to enjoy the beautiful girl's

glances which are full of love.

Q.No.8: Translate the following paragraph into Urdu. (15)

I looked at the vast mountain slope below where my mother and father had farmed. And I could remember, years later, when they farmed this land. It was on this steep slope that my father once made me a little wooden plough. That was when I was ix years old and they brought me to the field to thin corn. I lost my little plough in a furrow and I cried and cried until he made another plough. But I never loved the second plough as I did the first one.
