Pastor’s Corner

Dear Fairlington Faith Family,

Waiting is hard.

Last March was my first Easter here at

Fairlington and it was wonderful.

There was stunning music as I

followed the choir into the sanctuary

during the processional on Easter

morning. The lilies, hydrangeas, and

azaleas sprinkled the worship area

with color and life. The cross stood

outside the front doors of the church,

decorated by you with flowers you

brought to celebrate the day. There

was so much joy as we declared

“Jesus is risen” and we worshipped

together proclaiming the hope that

we share in resurrection.

I can’t help thinking about the joy of

Easter this year. But, we are not there

yet. We are still in lent, the 40-day

period of preparation for Easter. We

still have time to journey to the cross,

and then there will be Holy Week,

where we will remember Jesus’

death. There will be a time of

mourning before we celebrate

Easter.

However, without this waiting, without

Jesus’ death, resurrection and new

life would not be so incredible.

As we wait together, I invite you to

continue to grow in your faith by

reading with us the Gospel of John,

by practicing walking prayer, by

attending worship and small group

studies, and by serving others. Even

though waiting is hard, we will be

waiting together.

Lenten blessings,

Pastor Devon

More Highlights

April 9: A Reconciling Community Event: Conversations on A Way Forward: On Sunday, April 9 from 3:00pm to 4:30pm in the Fellowship Hall, you are invited for conversation and an update on the Bishops’ Commission on a Way Forward, facilitated by Dave Nuckols, a Commission member. The Commission on a Way Forward was proposed by the Council of Bishops and approved by the 2016 General Conference (our denomination’s legislative body) to do a complete examination and possible revision of every paragraph of the United Methodist Church’s Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and explore options that help to maintain and strengthen the unity of the church. The Commission consists of 32 members from all over the world, including bishops, pastors, and laity. Dave Nuckols is the Minnesota Conference lay leader and a board member of the Reconciling Ministries Network. Tentatively, the Commission’s work is scheduled to result in a called General Conference sometime in 2019 that will determine the way forward and structure of our denomination. The Commission’s third meeting will be in Washington D.C. April 6-9, and Dave has agreed to stay in the area to offer an update on the Commission’s work. For more information about the Commission, see their website: http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/commission-on-a-way-forward. For other questions about this event, contact Mark Elder at [email protected]

FAIRLINGTON UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

BY KARLENE MASTERS [email protected]

Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. (John 20:18)

Our congregation-wide reading of the Gospel of John as well as the dramatic monologues during worship introduce us to men and women whose lives are transformed after they meet Jesus. Easter Sunday’s transformed person will be Mary Magdalene, who was the only person present at the tomb the day after Jesus’ crucifixion. Like Mary Magdalene, United Methodist Women have been present and in ministry with women, children and youth since 1869. Be present with us at one of our upcoming activities as we work to transform lives through our actions and words. We especially need help on April 8 and 28.

One of the required committees in our church is the Staff Parish Relations Committee aka SPRC. This committee administers the relationship between the church staff, the congregation and the District Superintendent. They are responsible for staff job descriptions and personnel policy. They also consult on matters of staff support including housing, vacation, insurance, and pensions. The SPRC oversee the role and work of the clergy and staff as they carry out their leadership responsibilities. They conduct formal annual clergy evaluations and receive staff evaluations. The committee confers with and counsels the clergy in assessing their gifts, setting priorities for leadership and service, in their supervision of other staff, and maintaining work-life balance. The committee communicates with the church council when there is a need for church leaders or employed staff to adjust their responsibilities based on the committee’s evaluations. The SPRC members serve 3 year terms. The Chairperson for 2017 is Tom Przystawik [email protected] .

You are Invited to Help Our Community Partners

Saturday, April 27th

National (and local) Rebuilding Day BY KENT SMILEY

[email protected]

Rebuilding Together Alexandria is a program where volunteers assist low-income residents with home repairs they cannot manage themselves due to skills, tools, ability, cost, etc. Fairlington UMC has been participating with this program for 30 years, and last year was awarded Partner of the Year. Last year we assisted Shahnaz Ahmed to maintain her home in Alexandria with a replacement back deck, painting of the ground floor living area, installation of light fixtures in stairways, replacement of a front screen door, and painting of the front steps handrails. We don’t know what this year’s neighbor will need. But we do know that the love and support of our congregation will create success. I have felt blessed to have experienced the love our congregation has shared in the community. Loving our neighbors is more than just words to us and we enjoy meeting new people each year from the Fairlington family. If you are interested in helping, let me know by email [email protected]. Since we will be working on weekends leading up to the 29th you can be flexible on what weekend you can help. If you have a chance, check out the video and photos at Rebuilding Together’s website www.rebuildingtogetheralex.org.

From Beth Baker: 39 Miles to Beat Breast Cancer

This October, I will reach the "5 Year Cancer Free" milestone. I am so blessed to be a survivor and feel strongly that everyone with cancer should have access to the same diagnosis and care opportunities that were available to help me. Unfortunately, for many women this is not the case as they cannot afford the expense of mammograms, chemotherapy, or radiation. 2 years ago, I walked in the Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer --- you helped me raise over $4,000 to help in this cause, which supports mammograms for women in need, as well as research. This year, on May 6-7, I am participating in the walk again and my daughter Megan is walking with me. We are hoping that you will support our cause. If you would like to contribute towards our goals (we each need to raise $1,800), please log onto Caution-www.avon39.org; select "donate" at the top of the screen; and then enter Megan Baker or Beth Baker in the area where it asks for the name of the "walker." You can do it all online, or you can write a check to "Walk to End Breast Cancer" and we can submit the donation for you. Tell your friends! Thanks for all your prayers and support. Beth and Megan Baker, (703) 425-9535.

The 36th annual Step ALIVE! Walkathon will be held on Sunday, May 7th, to raise funds for ALIVE!’s Child Development Center (CDC), a high-quality, full-day preschool program serving children of low-income working parents. This 5k run or 5-mile stroll through Old Town Alexandria starts at 2:00 pm at First Christian Church, 2723 King Street, Alexandria, and ends at the same place with food, music and prizes.

Register in advance online at www.alive-inc.org or at the event on May 7 or call 703-837-9321 to obtain a registration form. On-site registration and T-shirt distribution will begin at 1:15pm. If you are unable to participate, “virtual walkers” are welcome to register.

Questions, contact Joe Sapp, 703-283-1730. To learn more about the CDC or ALIVE!, visit www.alive-inc.org.

Library NewsLibrary NewsLibrary NewsLibrary News Karen Orloff is the author of Miles of Smiles. When someone smiles, who knows where it goes? Baby smiles at Mommy, Mom keeps it for a while… and then passes it on. As the smile begins its joyful journey-moving from a first-grade class to a soccer team, from Gran to a garbage man, even to a puppy-it spreads happiness throughout the community, bringing everyone together. A sunny picture book guaranteed to make kids SMILE!!

First Bible Stories by John Dillow is the perfect introduction to the Bible. This beautiful book features simple versions of the most enduring Bible stories of all time. There are over 40 beloved Old and New Testament retellings featuring full color illustrations and scripture referrals.

The Story of the Twenty-Third Psalm by Alice J. Davidson & illustrated by Victoria Marshall, is told as rhyming verses – for example, “A little girl named Alice went to visit friends one day. The lived out in the country and had lots of room “to play.” Many thanks to Lauren Davis for her donation of books to our Chicken Soup Collection. It’s Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul: Stories about Pets as Teachers, Healers, Heroes and Friends. To make it easy to locate a Chicken Soup book we put all of them in one section under 158CAN.

FUMC Men’s Softball Team Hangs Up Their Spikes BY JIM WHEELER

After 60 years, the FUMC Softball Team will not field a team in 2017, due to factors

such as competition with other summer sports and difficulty finding players. The

team started in the mid-50s and has fielded a team every year through 2016. We will

be preparing a history of the team, players, and accomplishments for publication in

a future issue of the SteepleTalk.

I personally want to thank all the players and fans for all their support. It has been

an honor and a privilege to have played on and managed the team in the spirit of

community service and Christian fellowship. Thanks again!
