Arrangements for Wednesday 2nd September

As you know, the children return to school after the holiday on Wednesday 2nd September. We have a number of children joining us from different local schools and we would ask that all children in Years 4, 5 and 6 arrive on time at 8.50 a.m. and that children in our new Year 3 arrive at 9.30, to give us the opportunity to iron out any issues hopefully before they occur.

Thank you very much indeed for your support.

Year 6 2014 — 2015

This year has flown by! The children have been a pleasure to work with and have really made us proud. It’s lovely at the end of the year to look back and remember what they were like when they came to us in September. They have really matured.

There have been many highlights throughout the year. During all of our school trips, the children have been wonderful ambassadors for Fairisle Junior School.

We have been ‘wowed’ by the dedication the cohort have shown towards their learning. This perseverance and hard work has been rewarded by their fantastic results this year, which have been the best ever for our school. The children have developed into independent learners and are definitely ready for the challenges they will face in secondary school. Our loss is their gain!

The children have set an exemplary example to the rest of the school. We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge WELL DONE!

We all wish you every success in the future.

Year 3 Get into Recycling with Raymond Brown

A couple of weeks ago our youngest children had a great surprise, when during a trip to

Raymond Brown in Nursling, their new lorry was unveiled, decorated with the children’s

artwork. We had held a competition and the best entries were chosen to adorn the cab. The

children, dressed in Hi-Viz jackets and hard hats, were shown around the Nursling facility

before the lorry made an appearance. Well done everyone and thank you to everyone at

Raymond Brown for being wonderful hosts on the day!

Watch out for HX15 YPV, or ‘our lorry’ in the local area!

P.E. Kits

For the first week back after the summer holiday, please could all children bring their P.E. kit (red T-shirt and black shorts), so that the P.E. timetable can start immediately on our return.

Thank you for your support

House Points 2014 — 2015 The final totals for the year are as

Well done everybody!

Local Authority Leadership Review

At the beginning of the half term, we commissioned a Local Authority review of the school’s leadership. We have recently received the report from the two Inspectors and I thought you may be interested in the outcomes. They spent some time with our four year leaders walking through each class and looking at consistency of high quality experiences for the children across the school. They then talking with children and randomly checked their reading, writing and maths books. They said that ‘the senior leadership team works very effectively’ and that ‘pupils demonstrated confidence and commitment to apply effort and do their best.’

We were especially pleased that the inspectors noticed the ‘high expectations and rigour’ of school leaders and that our year leaders ‘evidenced drive’.

They also noticed that ‘pupils’ attitudes to learning observed throughout the morning were good overall. In some instances, they were outstanding.’

Well done everyone!

Congratulations Year 6

On Tuesday 7th July we received the results of the Key Stage 2 tests and I grew six foot tall as I read them!

Huge congratulations to our children in this year’s cohort and all the staff they have worked with over the

past 4 years. We have had the best results ever!

We exceeded our targets in almost all areas, with 91% of children receiving at least Level 4 in English and

Maths (88% last year). In addition, we increased our percentage of Level 6 results. A HUGE well done to

you all — we are incredibly proud of your achievements. You have worked very hard and this is the reward.

*Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

I have just heard that the Key Stage 2 assessments next year will be held during the week beginning Monday

9th May. Please ensure that if your child is in Year 6 next year, they are able to come to school every day.

Dinner Money — September 2015

I am pleased to let you know that, from September

2014, the cost of a school lunch will remain at

£2.00 each day. We would appreciate dinner

money paid on a Monday whenever possible.

Thank you for your help (from the office ladies!)

Year 4 Art Gallery — Thank you for your Support

Last Thursday afternoon our Year 4 team took over the hall and invited parents and friends to see their art

gallery, which was truly brilliant. They had set out a number of areas to show their work from the year and

they really enjoyed the opportunity to talk about what they have done over the past few months.

Parents were asked to comment in a book of memories. They said:

‘Was lovely to see all the amazing work that Year 4 has done.’

‘Year 4 — You are amazing! Great work everyone — you can be very proud of yourselves. FAB!!’

‘’The art gallery was absolutely amazing — all the children worked very hard.’

‘Lovely to see all the artwork and how excited they were to show it off.’

Year 6 Exit Survey Results

Last Friday I asked every member of Year 6 to complete a questionnaire to give me some feedback about their experiences over the past four years. There were six focus areas, which were:

Learning and Progress Safety at School

Trips, Visit and Visitors Sport, Music and Extra-Curricular Activities

Lunchtime and the Playground Moving to Secondary School

In all areas the survey results show that our children hold their school in very high esteem. They are proud to belong and a significant number of comments from children who have joined us towards the upper end of the school indicate that they wish they had been at Fairisle Junior throughout the key stage.

Most pupils feel they have worked hard (which I agree with) and that they have been supported to make good progress. Most feel that amount of homework is ‘about right’ and they especially enjoy home learning projects. Pupils told me they feel very safe at school and of the small number that say they have experienced bullying, almost all say they were happy with how it had been dealt with.

Most children think that trips, visits and visitors have helped with their learning and 93% had participated in a residential trip while at Fairisle Junior. This is a fantastic achievement.

Almost every child (96%) had taken part in extra curricular activities while at our school, these included sports, music, stage school, holiday club and Easter School to name just a few. Nearly half of all pupils continued with their musical instrument after Year 4, yet more children would like the opportunity to sing, dance or act during their four years with us. Well over half of the year group have had the opportunity to represent Fairisle Junior at sport (whether at league, federation or city level) and it is no surprise that our school has become a major force in the city when it comes to sport!

Although nearly 60% of our Year 6 regularly bring a packed lunch, almost all had taken a school lunch (even though for some children this was limited to Christmas lunch which we give to every pupil.) We think there is still room to improve the lunchtime experience.

Finally, nearly all our children feel ready to move on; the vast majority think we have helped them in their move to Year 7 and almost all will miss us! Thanks Year 6, we’ll certainly miss all of you.

Year 6 Leavers’ Party - We had a great time!

Last night evening we invited our Year 6 children back to school from 5.00pm for a couple of hours to let

their hair down and celebrate four years at Fairisle Junior with a fish and chip dinner and, of course, tunes

played by ‘DJ Woods’ as he was re-named for the evening!

The time passed too quickly and before we realised, it was time for parents to come and meet their children.

We decided we could not have asked to spend a couple of hours with a nicer group of young people than ‘the

best Year 6 in Southampton’. There was a further donation of £149.20 to add to the £198.25 we collected at

the Leavers’ Assembly for Dylan’s Quest.

Thank you to everyone who made the evening a success and to the children ….

Year 5 enjoy a day at Testwood Lakes

Last week the three Year 5 classes visited Testwood Lakes to explore rivers and the water cycle. They began the day by learning about the features of a river at first hand, which included a game of Pooh Sticks.

This was followed by a game which demonstrated the water cycle, leaving many children (and some of the staff!) very wet!

They had a great time and, of course, were excellent ambassadors for our school.

We finally collected 18,516 Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers,

which we have used to order new table tennis, rounders, cricket

and cookery equipment. Thank you very much.

Well done Jack!

A couple of weeks ago, Jack Cornick in Year 5 represented Fairisle Junior School in the Southampton Schools’ Diving Competition held at the Quays. The competition was organised by the Active Nation Diving Programme and offers young divers their first opportunity to participate. We were really pleased that Jack represented us and we congratulate him on achieving 4th place.

Very well done Jack and thanks for the photos!

Fairisle Junior Stage School takes over Hanger Farm Arts Centre

Last Monday and Tuesday evening our Stage School performed ‘Peter Pan’ at Hanger Farm Art Centre in Totton. A packed house of parents and friends joined together as they took us on a pirate tour which included great acting and some truly iconic songs which had many of us (of a certain age of course!) singing in our seats.

Congratulations and very well done to everyone who performed, as well as to Simon Woods and his team who have trained and rehearsed the children throughout the year.

Next year the London Palladium???

Federation Sports at Fairisle Junior School

Last Wednesday morning two teams of athletes from Fairisle Junior joined with friends from some of our

federation schools to participate in a sporting competition. They had a fabulous time competing against the

best athletes from seven other schools and by the end of our morning we found out that one of our teams had

come second to the team from Oakwood Primary. This followed our recent win at the Federation Elite Sports!

Congratulations to all our athletes. You were superb ambassadors for our school.

Drummers Brilliant (Again!) at Central Hall

Our drummers had a brilliant time when they performed to a packed house at Central Hall on Saturday evening. They have had a number of

opportunities to play at different times and venues this year and we have been really impressed with them

throughout.

Very well done to all our drummers, and to the children of Fairisle Junior who are members of Another Dimension as well as Young Voices.

Year 2 and 3 Drumming Workshops

Last Thursday afternoon the children from Year 2 joined our (current) youngest children for a series of

drumming workshops. We moved the furniture around in Miss Burgess’ classroom to make space for 50

children at a time and they were able to make plenty of noise together!

Everyone had a great time and I have an idea that after school drumming may be full again next term!

Staff Changes — Summer 2015

Today we say a fond farewell to Steve Paull, who retires from the profession after 23 years teaching and 9

years at Fairisle Junior. Emily Wilson, Fergal McQuillan and Sami-Jade Storton all leave us to continue

their teacher training in the knowledge that the experience they have gained here will stand them in good

stead for the future. I know you will want to join me in thanking all these colleagues for all they have done

for our children during the year and wishing them all the very best for the future.

In September we welcome the following teachers to Fairisle Junior:

Lydia Moran — Year 3

Zoe O’Shea — Year 4

Kay Hughes — Year 5

Connie Boler — Year 6

I know you will make them feel welcome in September.

Star Readers — Summer 2015

Over the past 3 months we have been awarding a Star Reader Trophy to the class in each year group with the

highest Reading Record return rate. Well done and thanks Mrs Thomas for calculating each month!

Most children have now seen the new Home School Diaries, which everyone will use next year as an

Organiser as well as a link book and reading diary. They seem really enthusiastic about them!

A Message from Mrs Nikki Webb, our Chair of Governors

Well that's another year over and where has it gone? This has been my first year as the Chair of Governors, and despite it being a very daunting role, it has been made easier by working with a great staff team and absolutely fantastic children. The school has achieved an awful lot during this year and has had the chance to take part in lots of exiting events such as achieving Investors in People (Gold), becoming a Stonewall Training School, taking part in the Imagine the Future day, (certainly held in an unusual setting!), the Music on the Map concerts and varying sports events including boys AND girls football tournaments, athletics meetings and not forgetting becoming the Haka champions! Many thanks to you the parents as well for supporting the various fund raising events that have gone on throughout the year (Children in Need, Save the Children, Red Nose Day and Brain Tumour Research).

Congratulations to our Year 6 children who have excelled this year in more ways than one! Firstly I had the privilege to go on the school trip to the Southampton boat show with them way back at the beginning of the school year. The children's behaviour was exemplary and I was very proud to be with them and to be a witness to comments made by members of the public complimenting them on their behaviour, (something that is also commented on frequently about the other years as well when out on school trips). Secondly the children got some fantastic results, the best in many years, putting Fairisle Junior School in a great position in the city. Thanks to the teachers who gave up some of their Easter holiday to hold booster classes to enable the children to embed their knowledge. And finally, Year 6’s leavers’ assembly! Well what can be said about that apart from that I was privileged to attend and was thoroughly entertained with the children's Fairisle memories!!! (Miss Bessey and Mrs Jeffs will NEVER be seen in the same light again! ). I wish the Year 6 children all the best in their secondary schools - you've been a privilege to know.

Finally I want to thank you, the parents, for your continuing support for the school and for supporting your children with homework and reading. Children and parents, enjoy your summer holiday and we will see you all in September ready for another successful year at the chalk face.
