Reported by Abraham Ninian Ejin & Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Farrah Wong.

The RoboNeo Deepracer Challenge 2021 is a virtual competition where participants will get theopportunity to build their machine learning models and compete on virtual tracks while diving deep intoadvanced reinforcement learning and upskilling with machine learning using the Amazon Web Service(AWS) cloud platform. Provided with free credits worth 100 USD, participants were given a week todevelop a model by training agents, in this case, a virtual autonomous 1/18th scale race car to completethe track with the fastest time. This programme is jointly organised by Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, SabahCreative Economy and Innovative Centre (SCEIC), Papar Community College, Kinabalu Coders, andAmazon Web Services (AWS) Educate Singapore and supported by the Higher Education Ministry.

The creation of these models employs theconcept of reinforcement learning, which is abranch of machine learning. For every trainingsession of the model, the agent will be given areward or penalty according to the actions taken. For example, if the agent goes off track, a penaltyis given and if the agent goes fast and smoothwithout going off track, rewards will be given.Eventually, the agent will learn what should bedone in the track and what not to. The rewardfunction, which is what the model uses to learndesirable and undesirable habits was coded usingthe Python programming language andparticipants were free to set the speed, steeringangles and hyperparameters to build the model.Once the model training phase is over, on the dayof the competition, 10-11 April 2021, participantswill submit their best-trained model. The virtualrace cars will be let to race, and the fastest timescan be seen on the Deepracer website in real-time.

Symposium on Advanced Coagulation-Adsorption Processes (ACAD2021) –‘Lockdown’ style

Reported by Dr. Junidah Lamaming.

The Symposium on Advanced Coagulation-Adsorption Processes was conducted virtually under theChemical Engineering Programme and was helmed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abu Zahrim Yaser on 23rd June 2021.Amidst the increasing cases of Covid19 where the government is enforcing the lockdown on the wholecountry again, the symposium was held with great success in ‘lockdown’ mode. The one-day event was runsmoothly in the own comfort home with opening remarks by the Vice Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk ChM.Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin and closed with an appreciation speech by the FKJ dean, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr IsmailSaad, himself. The symposium was divided into two sessions which were the morning session chaired byProf. Dr. Chu Chi Ming whilst Ir. Dr. Sariah Abang chaired the afternoon session.

The keynote and invited speakers

The organizing committee managed to invite 8 prominent speakers and 11 oral presenters to share theirknowledge and expertise related to the coagulation-adsorption processes. Apart from UMS, the local andinternational participants of 55 from different universities, including UKM, UPM, UTHM, USM, UNIMAS,UNIMAP, MPOB, Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak and University of Nottingham Malaysia, also managed to share the updates on research and developments of the coagulation and adsorptiontechnology that can be applied to the water and wastewater treatment in Malaysia through openquestions and discussion during the symposium.

Quoting Marie Curie’s line of ‘Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas’ is one of the manydriving forces in providing the platform for sharing knowledge and ideas through the symposium. With theresearch ideas pitch, we naturally become curious about the person and tend to seek more and venturingthe ideas in greater depth. Thus, the collaboration of many researchers from various institutions is beingfostered through the symposium, notably in the coagulation and adsorption field. The selected full paperswill be published in an edited book i.e. Waste Management, Processing and Valorisation (Springer) andSpecial Issue- Advances in Coagulation-Adsorption Processes (Hindawi) under the International Journal ofChemical Engineering (Impact Factor: 1.877). Both issues are expected to be published in January 2022.

With the restrictions and following the SOP’s, the preparation of the symposium that took 3 months was100% done virtually with the meetings and submission utilizing the internet to the fullest. The mostchallenging part is ensuring the internet connectivity was not disrupted during the symposium since bothorganizers and participants depend on their internet network providers. Fortunately, luck was on our sideand it went well. A good job by the organizing committee and all the participants that bridged the gapknowledge between academicians and students into more fruitful results and discussion. Stay safe anduntil next time!
