The objectives of the Law Society are to: 1. Lay the foundation toward increasing awareness of the law as it applies to,
and affects us. 2. Pave the way towards the creation of an indigenous Caribbean jurisprudence. 3. Engender a sense of community and family within the law faculty.
4. Facilitate the development of the law student academically, socially and professionally.
5. Reach out and have a demonstrative impact on the community through programs aimed toward assisting those less fortunate and offering guidance when appropriate.
6. To be a forum, where the interests and ideas of law students can be expressed.
7. To encourage intellectual discourse through political debates and round-table discussions.

Introduction of Law at Mona
The Faculty of Law was established at The University of the West Indies in 1970 with headquarters at the Cave Hill Campus. At the Mona Campus, 5 first-year courses were taught in a few classrooms in the Faculty of Arts and General Studies (now called the Faculty of Humanities & Education). The Mona first-year programme then moved to the Mona School of Business, Sir Alister McIntyre Building (Block D) then to the UWI Printery in 2010.
A New Home
In 2011 the Faculty opened a permanent state of the art 3 storey building at 1 – 3 West Road with multimedia equipment in the classrooms, a student lounge, a fountain and a 2 storey library. The building every law student now calls - “home away from home”.
Full Faculty Status
In 2012, the Faculty of Law obtained full Faculty status thereby allowing Jamaican nationals to pursue their Bachelor of Laws in Jamaica for 3 years. At that time the Faculty had 9 academic staff members imparting 42 courses, supported by 6 administrative members and 2 ancillary workers.
In 2015, the Mona Law Institutes Unit was established as an arm of the Faculty. Dr Christopher Malcolm serves as its director.
Current MonaLaw Statistics
Currently, the Faculty of Law has over 600 students enrolled with 17 full-time lecturers, 8 adjunct lecturers, 8 administrative members and 2 ancillary workers. Fifty-four courses are taught for the Bachelor of Laws programme. The graduate programme began in January 2015. In January 2016 the Faculty admitted its first Master of Laws (LLM) student. There are currently 11 LLM students and 5 MPhil/ PhD students. In November 2018, MonaLaw’s first 2 LLM students graduated and to date, over 1000 LLB students have graduated from MonaLaw.
