Introductory Note

Various factors like family, friends, school, extracurricular activities,

mass media, cultural and religious communities have an impact on a

child’s socialization process. To ensure that a kid acquires

appropriate social skills, norms, values, customs and behaviors, a

parent must take care of these different factors. Growing up in

negative surroundings will have adverse effects on his/her behavior

and personality during socialization.

PEER GROUP

Children in preschool often form

fantasy narratives together. This is very

important as he/she is also building a

firm relation with someone similar in

age and beliefs. Engaging in team work

and group projects help them improve

their social development as they get a

sense of security and support, outside

the family.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extracurricular activities include dancing, singing,

playing instruments, sports, art and craft and such

others. As children together take part in such

activities, they learn the importance of teamwork

and performing in groups. The child starts taking

responsibility for others, crafting unique ideas to

overcome difficulties, showing interest in

organizing skills. All these forms an integral part

of social development.

FAMILY TYPE AND SIZE

The most important unit for social development in children

is their family. Since family members are among the first

people with whom children communicate, their attitude has

the greatest influence on the child’s social behavior.

Growing up in large families, therefore, provides an added

advantage; it imbibes acts of sharing and caring for the

little ones. Having a sibling is also helpful in that case. The

child, therefore, grows up to be jolly with traits like

kindness, affection and compassion towards others.

CHILD RARING PRACTICES

Acceptance-rejection and control-autonomy are contributing factors that

determine a family’s attitude toward child rearing. The structure of the family and

the personality characteristics of individual parents make a difference in

socialization process. parents should pay careful attention in maintaining a

healthy and happy ambiance inside the house as it is the founding stone for the

child’s personality. Families that spend quality time together, for example:

spending time over dinner, preparing a meal together, or going out for fishing,

promote healthy socialization among children.

PUNISHMENT AND DISCIPLINE

Consistency is vital in guiding children to a higher level of

socialization. Often teachers scold or punish a child for a

behavior one day, and the next appear to ignore the

same behavior. This happens due to the mood of the

teacher at the moment. Consistency in discipline allows

the child to know what he can and cannot do. Parents

and teachers can assist children in socialization by

building a sense of trust and a feeling they can have

some control over their life

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Specific tasks related to social development occur in

early childhood, just like developmental tasks occur in

cognitive growth. The socialization process begins

shortly after birth and continues into adulthood, the

age of early childhood is a crucial period of

socialization. How children are disciplined, how they

respond to this discipline, and how they develop

independent behavior are all connected to the process

in which socialization occurs.

MASS MEDIA

Mass media arise as communication technology

(first the newspapers and then radio, television,

films, and the Internet) spreads information on a

mass scale. The mass media have an enormous

effect on our attitudes and behaviour, and on

shaping child's opinions about issues as well as what

they buy. Where television provides lot of

entertainment, at the same time it is a big agent of

socialization for all.

RELIGION AND CULTURE

Religion plays significant role in the socialization . It influences

morality, becoming a key component in people's ideas of right

and wrong. The influence of religion extends to many areas of

our lives. For example participation in religious ceremonies not

only teaches us beliefs about the here after but also ideas about

dress, concepts, and manners appropriate for formal occasions.

The culture or community a child grows up in determines his/her

social behavior to a great extent. For example, if a certain

cultural or religious community does not encourage

socialization, it will hinder a child’s social development. He/she

will not possess skills of gelling up well with others of his/her

age. The child will probably mix with people from his/her

community; which will fail to bring about diverse traits in their

personality.
