Hereditary Factors• What is heredity?

- sum total of the qualities, characteristics, and traits which have been transmitted from generation to generation.

Hereditary Factors• Many mental illnesses run

in families, suggesting that people who have a family member with a mental illness are more likely to develop one themselves.

Hereditary Factors• According to the 2000 Diagnostic

and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders, individuals with first degree relatives suffering from schizophrenia are at 10 times greater risk for getting it compared to the general population.

Physical FactorsA tired, malnourished child tends to be irritable and unreasonable. His attention span is short and his infrequent reading may be due to physical disabilities of vision, hearing or even neurological disorder.

- Social support, good friendships, and the ability to participate in economic and community life help people to maintain good mental health.

Socio- Cultural Factors- Belonging to a social

network can make people feel loved, valued and cared for.

Socio- Cultural Factors- Research shows that supportive

relationships encourage healthier behaviour patterns, improve wellbeing by acting as a buffer against stress, and influence self-esteem and the ability to cope.
