MONTHLY REPORT –OCTOBER 2016
From the Desk of Chief Investment Officer…
OVERVIEW OF MARKET
Investors are very keenly watching two significant developments in last fortnight. One was US president election outcome and other was demonetization of higher value currency in India. The markets are looking forward for new policies of US President Elect and its impact on global economy. Recent decision to remove extant high denomination ( Rs. 500 & Rs. 1000) from circulation and replacing them with new one is expected to prove positive in the medium term. However since these two denominations constituted 86% of money in circulation, so economy might feel some road blocks in transition. Federal Reserve left the rate unchanged at 0.25% to 0.5% for the seventh time during its November 2016 meeting. Policymakers also added that the case for an increase in the federal funds rate has continued to strengthen. On domestic front, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for the month of Aug 2016 was seen at -0.74% as compared to -2.44% in July 2016. Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreased marginally to 4.31% in September 2016 from 5.05% in August, 2016. With better growth prospects and relatively stable macro parameters, India is clearly emerging as fastest growing economy in the world. We have the advantage of favorable demographics in terms of young population and huge domestic demand of this aspiring new middle class. All the macroeconomic indicators except private sector capital expenditure are looking positive. During October 2016, Nifty was almost flat for the month however broader market as indicated by other indices like BSE 200, NSE Mid cap gave more than 1-3% retrun. Gradually asset management companies are expanding investment horizon to stocks other than benchamark indices. For the month, sectors like Metals and Oil & Gas outperformed whereas underperformance came by IT. FIIs were seller for more than 6400 cr which was abosrbed by domestic instittional buyers who bought 7400 cr of equity during the month. The Bond market remained strong in the month of Sept 2016, overall yields moved downwards across the curve. The G-Sec 10 year benchmark (7.59% GOI 2026) bond opened at 6.96% and closed 0.07% lower at 6.89% in the month of September 2016. The newly issued 10 year security (6.97% GOI 2026) closed at 6.79% (-0.02% lower). FUND PERFORMANCE During April to October 2016, majority of our Equity and Growth Funds outperformed the respective benchmarks. For 3 years period ending October 2016, most of these funds delivered positive annualized returns of arround 10-13%, outperforming the Benchmark in most cases by about 0.5-2%. Majority of Balanced Funds delivered about 10-12% annualized return over last 3 years period. Bond funds delivered about 10-11% annualized returns for the said period. Fund wise performance is detailed in the following sheets. FIXED INCOME OUTLOOK The overall macro-economic environment is continues to support the lower yields. The factors which may affect yield impact of demonetisation on fiscal deficit and inflationand US interest rate movements. EQUITY OUTLOOK The last quarter reuslts was better than expectaions for most sectors. Equity market capitalization to GDP is at multi year low giving further scope for good returns in coming years. GDP growth might be subdued due to demonetisation led low demand but it is expected to pick up.
