BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG-STIPENDIUM (2019/20)
Studiengang in Freiburg studieren möchten).
Transcripts of Records nachweisen müssen.
bewerben. Die Online-Bewerbung erfolgt unter folgendem Link:
https://www.bws-world.de/?network&lang=de
in Zweifelsfällen bitte an [email protected].

International Office Revised: December 2018
BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG-STIPENDIUM (2019/20)
ALBERT-LUDWIGS-UNIVERSITÄT FREIBURG
Call for Applications for Incoming students
(Attention: Subject to final approval of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung)
We accept applications from students and doctoral candidates of our partner universities within the
university-wide exchange program “Freiburg Global Exchange”, who wish to spend one or two
semesters at Albert-Ludwigs-University (ALU) as exchange students (except students who take part in the
Erasmus program or in departmental exchange programs or joint study programs; also not available for full-
time students who want to study an entire degree in Freiburg). The call for applications for students from ALU
who wish to study at a foreign partner university is announced separately.
Application Regulations The Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM is only available for exchange students within the program “Freiburg
Global Exchange”. This means that only students who are studying at ALU for 1 or 2 semesters as exchange
students, coming from one of the partner universities (via the International Office at ALU) to ALU, are eligible
to apply. Erasmus students, as well as students studying a joint study program or who will study here via a
departmental exchange program or as free movers (outside the mentioned exchange programs) or who are
planning on completing a complete course of studies in Freiburg, are not eligible to apply! In cases of doubt or
questions please contact [email protected].
Please also note that the scholarship is only intended for regular study stays. Thus, all scholarship holders are
obliged to study in Freiburg regularly and full-time. This means, that all scholarship holders (except from
doctoral candidates who are doing research here) must earn at least 20 – 24 ECTS per semester in Freiburg
and have to prove this by handing in a transcript of records after the end of the funding period.
Amount and Duration of Funding Masters and bachelor students from our partner universities who are awarded the scholarship will receive 600
Euros per month; doctoral candidates will receive 900 Euros per month. The scholarship period depends on
the lecture periods at ALU. As there is a special program line of the BW-Stipendium for certain countries
called „regionale entwicklungspolitische Komponente (REK)“, bachelor and master students from our partner
universities in South Africa and Ghana can be funded with 900 € per month.
Application Procedure
1) Applicants must apply at the International Office at their home university, by handing in the completed
application form and asking them to send this form (and, if there are several applicants from the same
university, an official ranking of all applicants) to the following email address: [email protected]
freiburg.de. The respective application form can be downloaded from the following website in the section for
incomings and then in the section “Application Procedure”:
http://www.studium.uni-freiburg.de/en/counseling/exchange-programs-and-studying-abroad/bw-
scholarship?set_language=en
4 Applications from incoming students are accepted only if the application form is forwarded by the International
Office at their home university to the International Office at ALU. No applications sent directly to the
International Office in Freiburg will be accepted.
2) After submitting the written application to the International Office at their home university, applicants must
apply online. The online application can be found at:
https://www.bws-world.de/?network&lang=en
After their successful registration, applicants must insert the required personal information and upload the
following documents: a letter of motivation, a CV, a transcript of records and a language certificate (German
or if all courses taken at ALU will be English-taught, English. If you are only attending English-taught courses
and English is your native language, please write a simple letter with your signature, stating that this is the
case). Additionally for PhD candidates: Letter of acceptance on letterhead issued by the professor who will
supervise the studies at ALU, including the start and end date of your sta, the working language, and a
handwritten signature of the supervisor in Freiburg.
Respective forms can be found on the homepage mentioned on the previous page of this call for applications,
if available.
Please note, that the online application is not completed before actually sending it.
For stays beginning in the winter semester 2019/20 (i.e. winter semester 2019/20 or winter semester
2019/20 AND summer semester 2020), the application must be complete (completed online-application and
all documents received by the International Office at ALU) by
April 01, 2019
Please note that only complete applications received before the end of the deadline will be considered.
Applicants will be notified by the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung if they have been selected for the scholarship
around the end of June 2019 or at the end of December 2019 (for stays beginning in the summer semester
2020), respectively.
For stays beginning in the summer semester 2020, students should be nominated by their home university
as soon as possible. The application and all additional documents must be received by the International Office
at ALU no later than November 4, 2019.
Departmental Exchange Programs
As of the academic year 2019/20, students studying at ALU via a departmental exchange program cannot
apply for a BW scholarship, anymore. In consultation with the university management, a comprehensive
service package for incomings coming via a departmental exchange program is being developed. Thus,
currently only outgoing exchange students from Freiburg can apply for a scholarship if they are going abroad
via a departmental exchange program.
Additional Information
You cannot receive any other scholarships that support living and studying in Freiburg in addition to the
Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM. However, you are allowed to receive additional scholarships for other
purposes, e.g. for travel costs. In cases of doubt or questions please contact [email protected]
freiburg.de.

10 Reasons to Choose the University of Freiburg
Information for International Students
Language Living in Germany is a wonderful way to learn a language spokenby millions of people around the world (including more than 90million native speakers!) and in many top research labs and com-panies. That said, the University of Freiburg increasingly offersopportunities for students with no prior knowledge of German, including entire degree programs taught in English – seewww.uni-freiburg.de/go/international-master-en for details. The university´s Language Teaching Centre (SLI) offers a variety of language courses and examinations for students to help you im-prove your language skills during your studies. The current pro-gram is available at www.uni-freiburg.de/go/sli-en.
Housing & Living ExpensesStudents typically choose to live in a dormitory, a shared apart-ment or a room in a private home. The Studentenwerk (student union) helps place students in housing situations that suit indivi-dual needs, or students can fi nd housing on their own. Shared housing arrangements are a wonderful way to get to know Ger-man students and learn the language. Monthly living costs are about €700 to €800 (including student housing, health insurance and a German language course).

Frei-burg is listed among the best German universities accor-ding to the latest Academic Ranking of World Universi-ties. Our graduates and faculty members include a number of Nobel laureates, and many are at the top of their fi elds. We have partnerships with top universities, research institutions, and businesses around the world.
2. Highly Satisfi ed StudentsSurveys show that most graduates would choose to stu-dy at the University of Freiburg again if they had the chance. Teaching and education lies at the heart of our work, and all degree programs undergo continuous, rigo-rous evaluation and development. We are committed to offering our students an education that meets the latest academic and methodological standards and provides them with fi rst-class professional skills.
3. Affordable, Yet High Quality Higher education in Germany receives generous state subsidies, which allow all students, including internatio-nal students, to take advantage of the incredibly low cost of higher education. The only fee is an administrative and
student activity fee of €105 per semester, which includes a dis-count on the regional transportation pass and access to the inex-pensive student cafeterias. Many scholarships are available for qualifi ed international students. Visit the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to explore your options: www.daad.de/en/
4. Comprehensive Student Support ServicesWe take service seriously at the University of Freiburg. Students have access to a wide variety of assistance and advice to support them in all aspects of their studies and personal lives. Internatio-nal students are given additional support designed to meet their unique needs. Before the semester begins, students attend an orientation week that introduces them to the university, the vari-ous faculties and their respective study program. Experienced students mentor new students during the fi rst few weeks, and advisors are available to provide ongoing academic support. Combined with the friendly and open nature of our city and uni-versity, this allows most international students to easily make connections and quickly feel at home.
5. Diversity on CampusWith close to 3,500 international students and a large number of renowned international scholars as guest professors or full-time faculty, we offer a truly cosmopolitan and diverse atmosphere in the middle of one of Germany’s most charming cities.
6. Old World Charm with a Youthful Flair Freiburg is rich in history. The city´s many sights, including the historic city center, are a magnet for tourists. The large number of students living in Freiburg keeps the city young, as does the wide array of nightlife and cultural attractions.
7. Great Location & Comfortable ClimateFreiburg is well known for its extremely high quality of life, and many visitors end up staying for good. Whether that is due to the fact that we have the most hours of sunshine of any German city or the unique atmosphere that permeates the capital of the Black Forest, Freiburg appeals equally to fans of nature, culture or the simple pleasures of life. Located less than an hour by train from France and Switzerland and ringed with green hills and vineyards, Freiburg’s ideal geographic location offers boundless opportuni-ties for relaxation and exploration.
8. Recreational ActivitiesThe area surrounding Freiburg offers many recreational options for the active student – skiing, hiking, cycling and mountain biking, just to name a few. In addition, students may join in a my-riad of athletic activities and courses offered by our university sports club.
9. Close-knit Student Community Freiburg is a student town. Most university buildings are located directly in the city center or in adjacent neighborhoods. Members of the university community can be found in all corners of the city at any time of day – in cafes and bars as well as on their way to lectures, seminars and libraries. With more than 30,000 students in Freiburg’s population of 224,000, you will quickly start recog-nizing familiar faces as you walk through town!
10. “Green City”Freiburg earned this name and reputation due to its high environ-mental standards, its innovative research and development (in-cluding at the university), and its general attitude toward the en-vironment. More than three decades ago, the city made a
commitment to fi nding alternative sources of energy, saying “no” to nuclear energy. Freiburg actively seeks to conserve energy, to use new technologies and renewable energy sources. It is, there-fore, no wonder that Freiburg is home to companies and research institutes that are frontrunners in the fi eld of solar technology. This is a place where high-tech research and successful entre-preneurship go hand-in-hand.
