The Facilities Department has contracted licensed pest control companies.

What is a pesticide or a pest control device?

Pesticides are chemicals or

substances used to kill or drive away unwanted insects, critters, or varmints.

Pest control devices are physical

mechanisms designed to trap, kill, or subdue pests.

Who is authorized to apply pesticides on our campus? Only applicators licensed by the State of

Texas Structural Pest Control Board may legally apply pesticides and / or set pest

control devices on our campus.

To be a licensed non-commercial pest control applicator in the State of Texas you must…

Have a clear criminal record. Attend 4 classes taught by state approved

instructors. Attend 2 of those classes in a specific type of

pest control (i.e. Structural, Termite, Lawn & Ornamental).

Pass 2 separate State exams.

And by the way… …all of this costs $$$. If you are interested in training to become a licensed

non-commercial applicator for the campus, speak with Mr. Haba.

If you are not interested in obtaining a license, and you

do not already have a license, then you are not authorized to apply pesticides on campus.

Incidental Applications

If the presence of pests in your work area or area of operation presents a safety or stoppage of work situation, you may then apply pesticides for that

specific pest and only to that specific area. Also…

The pesticide must not be allowed to contaminate any other area, surface, or organism.

You must log each occurrence of incidental application.

“But I just got a work order about bugs in Madonna Hall…”

There is a procedure for pest control… Follow the work order procedure. Let “Karl” do his thing. “Karl” is on campus every Tuesday at or

around 12 noon. He will treat the affected areas and fill out

the paperwork.

Setting and baiting traps?

Traps are considered to be “pest control devices” according to the State of Texas. This means that

non licensed persons are not even allowed to set or bait them.

If they are for critters outdoors, the Grounds supervisor may wish to contact a licensed

agency. If not, then any baiting and setting must be noted on the incidental application log.

A word on traps… Any animals captured must be treated humanely. This means that

traps must be monitored several times daily and removed over the weekends or holidays, then reset.

Any animals trapped/captured must be reported to the City of Irving

Animal Control Office (972) 721-2256. The city will only come out once an animal is trapped. Trapped animals found dead by the city leave us open for fines.

Wild animals discovered injured on campus may be reported to Dr.

Marcy Brown-Marsden at (972) 721-5245.

“What is this Incidental Log you keep talking about?” The State requires that a log be kept for

each occurrence of incidental pest control. The log & copies of the log form are kept in

the work order office. You may write down the information on the

work order and it will be transferred to the log.

Information needed: date applied, pesticides used, total amount applied, devices used, target pests, location, name of applicator.

Customer Requests Our pest control policy is posted in our web site for

anyone to read. We understand that our desire to satisfy our

customers requests sometimes must be tempered with what we are legally obligated to perform. If they have any questions they may speak to Mr. Haba.

The work order that the customer submits becomes

their 48 hour notice of intent to apply pesticides so that Karl may legally perform his pest application services.
