The impressionable teenage path is, often, paved with cobblestones of inexperience and hedged by pebbles of uncertainty. There is an element of confusion and a sense of frustration pegged on to the physical and emotional changes that the onset of teens usher. But there is also a lingering essence of carefree attitude and a fresh pull of confidence that prods a teen to explore his/her potentials and find avenues to realise it.Our cover story is a tribute to this element of teenage years. It is a celebration of youth who have dared to dream and make a success of their talent. ‘Start young’ is the inspirational message packed in these pages, as it traces the lives of four youth from different sectors. They represent young boys and girls who have a quest for success and know just how much of practice and patience is needed to achieve it.Right, the focus of this issue is on youth: whether it is the fun side of teen years with gadgets and accessories or the obsession with beauty and fashion, it is all about life in the young zone. We salute the vibrant style sense of our youth, the hip trendsetters, with a colourful ‘Special’ section featuring gadgets and accessories that reflect Joseph Joubert’s quote: ‘Ask the young. They know everything.’ Come along and experience the aches and joys of youth with FACES.

With his recent blockbuster ‘Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation’ establishing,

yet again, his hold over box office, Tom Cruise, has taken his ‘Impossible’ franchise to an all new level. He has aced the art of thrilling his fans (who call themselves ‘Cruisers’) with his acting prowess and chutzpah at performing stunts. It is his dedication to his craft and his work ethics that have helped him cruise towards success. As he notes: “The thing about filmmaking is I give it everything, that’s why I work so hard.”

Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (July 3, 1962), Tom Cruise started his film career at the age of 19 with ‘Endless Love’ and soon got a leading role in the romantic comedy ‘Risky Business’, which was released in 1983. It was, however, ‘Top Gun’ in 1986 that established him as a full-fledged movie star. A decade later, he consolidated his position as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood with his role as secret agent Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible film series.

Tom is the only son among four children of nomadic parents, Mary Lee, a special education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer, both originally from Louisville, Kentucky. He grew up in near poverty, and, to make matters worse, the family was dominated by his abusive father, who Cruise referred to as ‘a merchant of chaos’. The family was always on the move and, before Tom turned fourteen, he had attended 15 different schools in United States and Canada. He was fourteen when he enrolled in a seminary to become

a priest, but dropped out after a year. Acting happened to him after he lost his place on a high school wrestling team due to a knee injury. He soon made his way to New York to try his luck in Hollywood…and the rest, as they say, is history

About those initial days, he is quoted to have said: “As a young actor, people were trying to define who I was before I really knew that for myself. But I still remember thinking, ‘This is what I love doing, and I hope I’m going to be able to do it forever’.”Within five years time he earned roles in some top grossing films like ‘Top Gun’, ‘The Color of Money’, ‘Rain Man’ and ‘Born on the Fourth of July’, among others. And, in no time he became one of the highest paid actors in the world, earning an average fifteen million dollars a film for moview like ‘Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles’, ‘Mission: Impossible’, ‘Mission: Impossible II’, ‘Mission: Impossible III’, ‘Vanilla Sky’, ‘Minority Report’, ‘The Last Samurai’, ‘Collateral’, ‘War of the Worlds’ and ‘Jerry Maguire’.

Over the years he has won Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture in Drama for ‘Born on the Fourth of July’; Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture in Comedy/Musical for ‘Jerry Maguire’; and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting

Role in a Motion Picture in 2000 for ‘Magnolia’. In 1995, Empire magazine listed him as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history; two years later the publication ranked him number three in its list of ‘Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time’. He was also chosen by ‘People’ magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.

Summing up his career and life in general, he’d said, “I’ve had a very interesting life. There are ways of handling the complexities. I’m willing to take on responsibilities as a father, as a producer, as an actor - and I enjoy that. I’ve always been changing and evolving and growing. There’s no pinnacle of power where you can sit back and rest.”

Taylor Swift rejected millions

Celebrity circuit is abuzz with reports that Taylor Swift turned down £2 million to perform three songs at a billionaire’s wedding. She was, reportedly, offered that sum by an unnamed tycoon, which she declined, to make time for one of her closest friends, model and actress Jaime King, who was celebrating the christening of her five-week-old son Leo.

Will and Jada’s marriage in problem?Hollywood has a way of doubting the very idea of rock-solid marriages, with constant rumours floating around couples who have stood the test of time. No wonder then that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are always the subject of divorce rumours. Every once in a while, the so-called unnamed ‘sources’ claim that the couple are headed for Splitsville. Well, this time around Will Smith had this to say to shut them up: “If I ever decide to divorce my Queen, I swear I will tell you myself!”

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters reunite…for dinnerTwo months after Emma Roberts and Evan Peters ended their engagement the two were photographed leaving after dinner together in West Hollywood. They seemed to be on friendly terms as they left the restaurant and headed home. However, whether they are back together is anyone’s guess, as neither Roberts nor Peters has publicly commented on their breakup.

Tracy Morgan married his fiancée Popular comedian of the ‘30 Rock’ fame, Tracy Morgan, who almost lost his life in an accident last year, is a married man now. He wed his long-time fiancée Megan Wollover, at an intimate ceremony that was attended by friends and family, including the couple’s two-year-old daughter Maven. A celebrity magazine quoted him saying: “After almost losing Tracy last year, I am so grateful to finally be married to the love of my life… W e have been

through so much and our love is stronger for it.”

‘One Direction’ to take a long breakCome March 2016 and ‘One Direction’ band members – Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan – will take a long break. A yearlong break! This break from each other and the band will mean that they will not tour with their fifth studio album, which is scheduled for release sometime later this year. The boys are, however, still working hard and they recently released the music video for their new single ‘Drag Me Down’.

Fahad Al Kitani, admired as Oman’smost successful junior golfer, is on a winning spree

From a five-year old, who got his thrills swinging plastic clubs, to a young

teen holding the championship trophy in the GCC Under-15 tournament recently, Fahad Al Kitani, Oman’s junior golfing champion, has, in a short span of time, made his mark in the local as well as regional golfing arena. It was his father, Harib Al Kitani’s, penchant for the game that set the precedent at home. He got him interested with plastic clubs before moving on to the ones designed for kids. “He was growing and getting fond of the game,” recalls his father. Fahad started training and playing at Ras Al Hamra Club with other kids in the national team and soon became a part of the Ghala Golf Club. The young team developed quickly with the support from their respective parents and their game received a further boost following the formation of the National Junior Squad by the Oman Golf Committee (OGC), under the Ministry of Sports Affairs. During this time, Qalhat LNG also started sponsoring the teams and organising competitions for juniors, which helped encourage the team as well as the sport.

Golf pride

The national team is currently on a crest of success with the team members practicing hard to retain their trophy and also compete in other international tournaments. Fahad’s win in the GCC championship was a great boost, for him as well as the Oman team, as they also won the championship at the same time. “Being number one in the GCC is, indeed, a big boost,” he admits, as the previous year had seen him come second, missing the first by only one shot.

Crediting his growing success to OGC, H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad al Rumhi, Minister of Oil and Gas, and

the Ministry of Sports Affairs for their e n c o u ra g e m e n t , he maintains that he is currently on a training spree for future tournaments. However, there are challenges on the way... “One of the biggest challenges for junior golfers is

balancing schoolwork with golf, while practicing the sport for various events,” he states.

But that hasn’t stopped Fahad and his junior squad teammates, Amjad Al Toky, Rashad Al Harthy and Hamood Al Harthy, from winning laurels for the country. Hamood was voted as the top sports junior in the Arab world last year and Rashad has won many a local competition. As a team they also played well in the GCC Cup Kuwait, despite being the youngest competitors in the Under-18 category.

It was guitar that set the tone of his musical career as a young

13-year old teen. But it was poetry that he was really passionate about, and, somewhere around the age of 15 he learnt to combine both poetry and music.

Ghazi Al Balucci learnt to strum the guitar on his own; refining and updating his knowledge during his casual meetings with people involved in the field of music. “You watch and you learn eventually,” he quips, adding that he soon began composing music to his poems and singing them out in his bedroom. He never really gave much thought to singing, as his initial plans, as a young teenager, was to write songs that other people would sing. But somewhere along the process, he found himself singing so often and recording little snippets on his phone that, eventually, a friend signed him up for a live performance…without his consent.

“This was about 9 months ago and that is basically where it started,” he muses, adding that the event, titled ‘Got Hope’, a fundraiser for cancer, was his first public performance of its kind.

Making Music22-year old Ghazi Al Balucci’s foray into the world of music was inevitable, with song writing on his fingertips and music in his veins

Not surprisingly, the response following that show was positive and people were expressing their desire to see more such events. And so, following suggestions by a friend, he took his talent to the social media – Instagram and Snapchat. “From then on it was an escalation of interest,” he adds.He was soon seen performing at openings and private events, singing his tunes as well as doing covers. His focus, though, never wavered from song writing and he also initiated the process of working on his first album, which is more of an EP or a mixed tap for studios outside or label companies.

Recently, he got a call from a producer in Saudi Arabia who works for a major media company, to work on a project together. He took a flight to Saudi on his own expense and worked with them for a week. With his fan base in Saudi, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar growing, he has been receiving several opportunities in the Gulf, but it is proving difficult

with studies occupying most of his time (Ghazi is a student of Business Management and Administration at the College of Banking and Financial Studies).

Locally too he has been performing in restaurants. “I have been getting a lot of calls… My social media has been getting me a lot of exposure,” he adds, pointing out that he usually performs solo, unless he finds somebody to collaborate with him.

Talking about his style, he defines it as acoustic-indie-folk. He is also into contemporary Arabic music, which is a new style that has been recently introduced into Arabic music. “I try Arabic music as my largest fan base is from Saudi Arabia and they insist some Arabic content… So I try to do Arabic but in my own style,” he explains.

Most of his songs are about his life, his personal experiences, relationships with family and friends, while some are very general. “In most of the songs that I write, no matter how personal they are, I try to make sure they are written in a style that can be relevant to any person or situation, more so with my spoken word poetry, which almost would sound like rap music…” he adds.

At the moment he has a humble recording setup in his home and relies on it for most of his work. The cost involved in studio recording is high, and, although Ghazi has people promoting him, financial support has not been forthcoming. “I use the money I make from live shows to buy my own instruments; I am slowly building my studio,” he maintains.

When asked what next, he admits that he has no inkling. He says he goes with the flow and does not hesitate to grab any opportunity that comes by. Everything that he had been doing since his early teens seems to have led to this point, where things are, seemingly, happening simultaneously. His next step, though, would be to seek good recording opportunities by creating a sample of his work.

As mentioned earlier, his only lament, despite all this positive feedback is the lack of financial support. “I have been getting a lot of positive feedback but there is only so much you can do with compliments,” he

states, candidly, admitting the need for recording space, bigger live shows, opportunities abroad with full-expense paid travel.

He has, however, been receiving constant biased criticism for his personal style and the way he presents himself, which is seen, by a section of the community, as being overtly western. On the contrary, the plot behind his photographs – taken by local creative people (Instagram: @chndy, @chebmoha, @novemberus, @brilliantmindzphotography) as a collective effort to support his music with visual content – demonstrate that that is not the case, he points out.

And, as far as networking is concerned, he still has to rely on social media in the absence of better networking opportunities and so stresses on the need for more platforms, specifically for artistes, where creative people could hang out. He hopes to initiate an artistic hub for creative people from all walks of life to meet and network.

When Ameer Mohammed Al Balushi realised that he had the talent to take his passion

for football to a new level by dabbing in freestyle football (the art of self-expression with a football, while performing various tricks with any part of the body), little did he know that he would be making a career out of it.

It all started in 2008 when he and his friends indulged in football during the month of Ramadan. A resident of Al Amerat, it was a routine for the boys to play every evening in the neighbourhood. It was during one such game that a couple of local Red Bull representatives came over to watch them play, and, later, asked him to participate in an upcoming freestyle football competition.

Friends were quick to encourage, and Ameer, then 17, decided to give it a try. The competition was in Marah Land in Qurum, with the finals in Al Bahja. He cleared the prelims and made it to the first two rounds in the finals, but choked in the main event. The winner went on to represent Oman in Brazil, and he was hooked for life...

Days after that competition, he received a call to perform in Sohar for another Red Bull event; it was soon followed with another opportunity to perform and that brought up the issue of practice.

With more practice came more shows and Ameer was set to participate in the next Red Bull freestyle contest in 2010. He had waited for two years - those days it was a biennial event

– and was ready with practice. However, minutes before the start of the contest, a board placed as a backdrop fell and made a deep cut in his ankle. “We were taking photos with the then reigning world champion Arnaud Sean Garnier,” he recalls.

It was a nasty cut and organisers advised him to go to the hospital for treatment, but he had waited long for this day to give it a miss. “I simply bandaged my feet to stop the bleeding and went headlong into the contest,” he states, adding that he cleared all the levels, but couldn’t make it in the finals. Weariness, compounded by the ache in his leg, made it difficult.

He has since participated in several contests and won quite a few. It didn’t take him long to realise that this was what he wanted to do. “It is not money…I thrive on fame and success,” he confesses, adding, “Every child has a dream and mine was to make a name. I want people to know my name and my work.”

It was his passion for football that initiated Ameer in this field. He is a big fan of Ronaldinho and was inspired watching his freestyle actions. “I thought if he could do, I could too… I saw him and learnt a lot,” he states, adding however, that he learnt the tricks on his own, practicing at home or out in the park.

2012 saw him entering the Red Bull contest one more time with his friend and freestyle partner, Mohammed Nasser Al Noufli. Both made it to the finals, with Noufli lifting the winning cup and travelling to Italy to represent Oman in the global finals.

A month later, Ameer scored a major breakthrough by winning the local talent contest held at Marah Land. It was an open contest organised by Majan College for all college students. This followed several more awards to strengthen his resolve to continue.

Thanks to the support from Omantel, he found a firm footing as a freestyle performer, earning recognition from different quarters. His team of performers, including Noufli, grew and their repertoire now included a variety of entertainment shows.

They were, however, keen to receive some support from the Ministry of Sports Affairs, more so following words of commendation from a top government official, who noticed them performing at an event. But things came to a nought as the anticipated support was not forthcoming and the young team, which goes by the name of ‘Legend Crew’, had to rely on their own resources to move ahead.

“Fortunately, Omantel has been very supportive,” reiterates Ameer, noting that they need more such support

from other resources to go further in this field and earn international recognition. They are currently renting out a hall for their practice sessions and have to, generally, rely on their own resources.

Teaching and training others in the art of freestyle football is on the agenda of the team, which is, presently, doing it free for interested young girls and boys who are physically fit and have the requisite stamina. However, he cautions that the sport is not injury-free, as he has personally experienced it early in his career. A back pain following a performance put him out of action for close to a year. But he has explored his talent pool and has found that he has potentials to do skateboarding, dancing and even modelling.

Ameer and Noufli have performed freestyle football together at several events, including the half-time show during the Real Madrid Vs Barcelona match here.

The team now is intent on popularising the sport and are keen on starting a school for the same. The hope is to take the sport to newer levels and find media support too. The team will soon be seen performing in a short movie on Oman, by German director Matthias Zentner, which is scheduled to be aired in November, during the 45th National Day celebrations.

The adrenaline rush from car drifting cannot be duplicated, maintains Mohammed Al Hinai,

local car drifting hero, who has taken his love for all things cars to an all-new level. “We have that thing for cars and we get caught in drifting,” he muses.

This sport of international repute is fast growing in Oman with the concerned authorities creating designated drifting areas for enthusiasts. Although the difficulty level is high and it demands an element of bravery to indulge in it, Mohammed had no doubts of getting into the sport. He was 20 when he bought his Dodge Challenger and hit off on the car drifting path – ‘for fun’, as he quips – to realise his dream of making it big in the drifting arena.

Fortunately, in 2012-13 Oman Automobile Association (OAA) opened its drift arena and introduced designated tracks for various sports, including drifting. “I was the first person to go there and participate,” points out Mohammed. Things, however, were not in his favour on that first day. “It was like a practice day for a tournament and I totally failed. I don’t know what happened. I was shocked by myself...” he recalls. He realised that it all boiled down to his earlier training, as drifting in a close place, in a certain track, is totally different from drifting outside on roads. “Drifting on roads is simple, unlike professional drifting… It is more about working on the sport in free spaces where there is no traffic,” he points out.

Mohammed Al Hinai, established car drifter, talks about his love for the sport, which he refers to as ‘controlled chaos’

Asked about the stringent police rules against open drifting, he states, matter-of-factly, that everyone gets into trouble with the police. “Everyone who loves drifting would have gotten in trouble with the police at some point of his life. But things have changed following the opening of the drift arena at OAA. There is no way I would do something outside the arena now. We have a secure environment and don’t need to do anything outside,” he explains.

However, he admits that it was hard for him, initially, more so as his car wasn’t made for drifting. With OAA opening for practice sessions he was soon practicing his skills, getting better with every session. By the Ramadan of 2013 he had made excellent progress to reach the 5th position, a commendable development for amateurs.

This boosted him to practice more and, along with his friends – Mohammed Al Awaidi and Mohammed Al Zadjali, who are part of the Mopar Drift Team – he incorporated changes in the car to help with the drifting. Their fortunes turned and they found sponsorship from Dhofar Automotive, who helped them grow as a professional team. Mohammed Al Awaidi took charge as the team manager and Mohammed Al Zadjali doubled up as a drift coach and mechanic. All three friends have a long association – they grew up together, studied in same college and now work in the same company.

Talking about the early days of car drifting in Oman, he affirms that there were a few who had gotten into

drifting, but he wanted to be the first youngster to go for it professionally, he muses. It was still a new sport and he was keen on seeing it grow, like in the US and Europe. Although there are several championships happening locally, and even in the Gulf, the game is still in the growing phase in the Middle East, he maintains.

He has participated in Red Bull championship twice; he came overall second in the Oman Championship season; and has been a regular at Ramadan drift events.

On the element of dangers involved, he explains that the sport is guided by international rules and regulations that are strictly enforced. Enthusiasts are not permitted to drift in insecure places and the cars themselves need to go through a safety inspection. “They disqualify the car if they spot a leak or something… In the professional drifting arena there are very few accidents as drifting now comes under FIA regulations. Besides, the driver is required to wear safety gear,” he points out.

With the number of car drifters growing, things are looking bright for the season. He is very optimistic about the new crop of drifters. He states: “In Oman we have a lot of keen drivers. They are growing very fast; their driving skills are very high. You cannot underestimate them. But it is saddening when you see a young chap with excellent driving abilities facing financial hurdles. The energy from those guys cannot be built on without support. This is a big problem faced by every sport in Oman.”

She is witty, candid, charismatic and, yes, beautiful. Not exactly in that order, but her infectious smile

and quick repartee have made her an affable CEO who has won over her team with her easy charm.

Bushra Danwra belongs to the elite club of women CEO’s in the country. She has, in a span of a year and a half, led Capital Stores from the front, with her unwaver-ing professionalism and her determina-tion to excel. She admits that her people management skills, combined with her charisma, have helped her reach the top of the management scale.

A student of business administration, Bushra did her basic schooling in her hometown in Beirut, Lebanon, before moving to Sydney, Australia, where she earned Bachelors and Masters degree in Business Administration. Talking about those early days, she recalls that as a young student she was driven by a quest to learn, which helped her find a placement with the L’Oréal Group as a sales associate. She soon became a supervisor and, following the comple-tion of her studies, got hired as a busi-ness consultant of L’Oréal in Dubai. “It was a learning curve,” says Bushra, who

quickly grasped the market and learnt the finer nuances of doing business in the Gulf.

In 2008 she was offered an opportunity to move to Oman as the Country Man-ager of L’Oréal and there was no turning back for Bushra, who found an immedi-ate connect with the country and its people. However, two years later, owing to personal commitments, she called a stop on her L’Oréal job and joined the UME Group, an international hospital management group, which operates Muscat Private Hospital. She took over as the head of business planning and realised the vast potential of the health care industry to reach out to people. It was a completely different experience, she agrees, pointing out that it enriched her personally and brought her in close contact with the Omani community. “It made me realise the importance of doing business that touches human beings,” she states, noting that such an exposure adds further dimensions to a leader or a manager’s way of thinking and looking at people in general.

Four years later, she had an opportunity to leave the country, but that was not an option she sought. “I wanted to stay in

the country and, fortunately, got this post as the CEO of Capital Stores, thanks to my previous history and experience in this luxury business,” she states, noting that it happened at the perfect stage in her life.

She attributes her present crest of suc-cess to her experience in the health care sector, which helped strike a right bal-ance in her career. But she admits that it is not all smooth sailing and that there are challenges, mostly in the manpower department, with demands on training. She is, however, hopeful of a transition period that would help them do things differently; one that would take the com-pany to newer levels.

She explains: “The hard work with the team will show results before the end of this year. I have a responsibility towards my team, the society and the country, and, definitely, towards the business and the owners of the business who trusted me to lead. Capital Stores is a company with a long history and it has always been managed and run by the family. It was a big trust on their part to make me a CEO and I cannot disappoint anyone, be it the customer, the society or the team at Capital Stores.”

An Omani researcher, along with a team of scientists from the University of Leeds, has demonstrated, for the first time, how to generate magnetism in metals that aren’t naturally magnetic

Generating magnetism

“We have demonstrated, for the first time, how to generate magnetism in metals that aren’t naturally magnetic. This could end our reliance on some rare and toxic elements currently used,” explains Fatma Al Ma’Mari, the co-lead author of the research article published in the journal ‘Nature’, earlier this month.

A lecturer in the Department of Physics of the College of Science at Sultan Qaboos University, Fatma, who is pursuing her PhD at the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Leeds, is hopeful that the research will open new paths for devices that use abundant and hazardless elements, such as carbon and copper. She joined the Condensed Matter Physics group at the University of Leeds in October 2012 to do PhD in conjunction with Sultan Qaboos University. She undertook her undergraduate studies at SQU before her Master’s from the University of Loughborough.

Fatma’s research relates to magnetism and spintronics. She says she was interested, at the beginning of her PhD, in studying new and interesting molecular magnetic tunnel junctions for technological applications in a series of magnetic devices. She is, specifically, studying these systems in order to improve the understanding of the fundamental physics of organic materials and to enable the fabrication of

devices that can be used for magnetic

field sensing for future data storage technologies.

The current research concerns how molecules interact with metals to form new composite materials with exciting new properties. Highlighting the potentials of the research, she states that this would help develop new applications, such as molecular magnetic memories that are eco-friendly and controlled by electric fields. Future technologies, such as quantum computers, will require a new breed of magnets with additional properties to increase storage and processing capabilities, she notes, pointing out that their research is a step towards creating such ‘magnetic

metamaterials’ that can fulfil this need.

“The discovery opens the door to a new class of materials that could be useful for numerous industrial and technological applications, including power generation in wind turbines, memory storage in hard disks and in medical imaging,” she notes.

Explaining further, she says: “There is an ever-growing need to engineer specialised magnets for future computer technology, medical science and research applications, which this researh could help fulfil... A large amount of rare earth minerals, primarily neodymium and dysprosium, are key components of the magnets in modern wind turbines, along with iron, cobalt and nickel. These rare earth elements are expensive and cause environmental damage; mining one ton of rare earth minerals produces about one ton of radioactive waste. Being able to engineer hybrid metal-organic materials with magnetic strength equivalent to the rare earth materials promotes itself as better for the environment. This innovative technique might also provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to the gadolinium contrast agents used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).”

He came; he caused a media blitz; and conquered foodies and media representatives

with his easy camaraderie and an in-exhaustive knowledge of all things food and business.

Presenting, Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor...a brand by himself. From his early days of hosting the popular cookery show, ‘Khana Khazana’ on Zee TV, to his present day ventures that range from authoring cookbooks to establishing signature restaurants around the world, his culinary genius is ever vibrant as he continues to wow food aficionados with his culinary enterprises - his recent invite to the United Arab Emirates, to cook a special fare for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his official visit, providing a neat icing to his ever-growing popularity.

In town for the opening of ‘The Yellow Chilli’ at The Wave, Muscat, he held the media rapt with his charming stories, ranging from the twist behind the brand name ‘yellow chilli’ and the importance of presenting authentic fare, to the ‘planned intimidation’ of five-star restaurants and the role of chefs as business developers in a regular restaurant.

While the idea behind the creation of ‘yellow chilli’ has been talked about at various forums, the fact that he went beyond the c o n v e n t i o n a l concepts to create an identity that is

unique to him, demonstrates his

wariness for all things staid and his quest to set his own benchmark, which is also reflected in his new restaurant.

Diners at ‘The Yellow Chilli’, the new casual fine dining restaurant in the capital, can relish the redefined Indian cuisine in a tastefully decorated set up. The idea, as the Master Chef described, is to provide food that is affordable – “Price that doesn’t pinch,” as he puts it, and not toe the line followed by some five star restaurants, which incorporate a series of intimidating elements – ‘planned intimidation’, as he calls it – to hike the price.

Talking to FACES on the sidelines of the press conference, he reiterated

that the team at ‘The Yellow Chilli’ is working to ‘keep the Indianness alive’. Operating under the banner of Mazaya Oman, the restaurant, he notes is the result of a well-planned market research; following a ‘taste of the market’, as he puts it.

“There is a lot of similarity between Omani and Indian cuisine,” he affirms, however, pointing out that the difference lies in the use of spices. While the menu is designed to cater to a wide range of clients, incorporating its role as a ‘neighbourhood restaurant’, the underlying stress is on Indian food – ‘Food that people can relate to,’ he notes.

When asked what first timers to ‘The Yellow Chilli’ could expect, he quipped, “It is for them to discover!”Helmed by Executive Chef Manoj Radi, who has trained under the Master Chef himself, the restaurant will feature many of Sanjeev Kapoor’s signature dishes such as Peru Pyala (guava juice, lemon juice with a hint of mint and rimmed with red chillies), Lalla Mussa Dal (black lentil believed to have originated at the Lalla Mussa station in the North Western Frontier Province), Tandoori Basil Prawns and Shaam Savera (spinach koftas filled with creamed cottage cheese, served in a tomato butter gravy) which was one of the first dishes created by Chef Kapoor on his TV show that went on to become extremely popular

Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor proved he is a culinary storyteller, as he presented snippets of his highly eventful food journey at the opening of his ‘The Yellow Chilli’, a chain of casual dining restaurants

When Um Jihad’s mother approached Najah A l - A b d u l s a l a m ,

founder of ICommunicate Speech-Language Pathology clinic, in December 2014, he had been diagnosed with autism and his speech was severely delayed. It looked like a difficult case and Najah was, expectedly, apprehensive about the case. “I see a lot of this and I was tired…” she recalls.

But Jihad’s mom’s enthusiasm rubbed on her and she soon initiated speech therapy sessions, which helped the family realise that the problem was only speech delay and not autism as it was first diagnosed. Usually, Najah makes a report based on

which she gives a detailed treatment plan; one which specifies the speech development steps – from naming the animals and fruits to the use of verbs and forming sentences. When Jihad came in for the first session, his mother was apprised of the therapy and acquainted with the observation room, where she would be able to sit and watch and listen.

Curiously, when he came in for the second session, he stunned everyone with his learning skills. He had done his homework thoroughly. “That was very impressive,” notes Najah, pointing out that she credited it to Jihad’s mother’s enthusiasm. She’d taken on the onus of working closely with him on the therapy, even getting stuff from the shop to make the learning more effective.

Generally, when goals are given to parents of speech-delayed children, it takes them a year to reach the target; however, in Jihad’s case things were moving from one session to the other

with ease. It had progressed to such a point that in just four months’ time he was able to speak. “It was a big change,” agrees Najah, explaining that the process involved working with an educational psychologist to ensure smooth initiation to a school.

At a recently held ‘Support Group’ event at the Centre, in the Jawharat Al Shatti Complex, Um Jihad’s mother spoke about her experiencs, noting that it was purely her determination to get her son to speak that changed the course of treatment. Her intent was to open up about her son and apprise other mothers about the dangers of ignoring the warning signs and the need to put brakes on television viewing time and content, which was found to be the main cause of Jihad’s problem.

His was a classic case of ‘lack of stimulation’. “It was a normal delay owing to the absence of any stimulation,” reiterates Najah, adding that Jihad spent hours in front of

the television. However, following therapy sessions at Icommunicate, Jihad’s mother ensured that her second daughter’s television viewing was regulated. Not surprisingly, her language skills and attention skills have been found to be way advanced than her brother’s.

Najah, who did her Bachelors and Masters degree in Speech Therapy, has been involved in the field of speech therapy for the last nine years. She worked at the Royal Hospital before resigning and opening her own clinic. She founded ICommunicate in 2011, and has, since, been getting an average of two cases of children with speech problems, owing to a variety of reasons. The underlying cause in most cases is lack of stimulation. “By lack of stimulation I mean kids who stay almost 6 hours in front of the TV and on the same channel,” she states, noting, in particular, a popular channel called ‘Tuwoor Janna’, which is fast paced. Children somehow get addicted to this and stay for six to seven hours watching it.

Television, obviously, is a one-way communicator, states Najah, adding that she drives this truth home with all parents. In many households, the child is left in the care of a nanny or a caregiver, who hardly has any time for the child. “Parents expect the nanny to communicate with the child while she has millions of other things to do in the house. The best thing for her is to place the child in front of the TV or iPad while she finishes the housework. This situation continues and, suddenly, when the child turns four, everybody wakes up with ‘oh my god, he is not talking…he is hyperactive, he doesn’t sit, he doesn’t listen, he doesn’t…’

“While I totally understand that there are several other factors and medical issues that play a role, the problem here is that it gets detected very late. It should happen when parents take the child for vaccination at six months or even at one to two years of age. Even before the child’s typical age of speech, he gives so many signs if there is any delay. The child doesn’t simply sit quiet for one year; he/she absorbs things before uttering calling out ‘mamma’ or ‘baba’… Soon

the vocabulary will increase and will move to short sentencs. Why then should it take parents three years to detect the problem?” questions Najah.

The fact, she admits, is that most parents do not see it as an alarming situation and may even believe that it would become all right when he/she goes to school. Unfortunately though, that is not always the case, as research has shown that kids with delayed speech are delayed in school and even face learning difficulties.

Hearing is another problem that is closely related to speech delay. ICommunicate is equipped to address speech and hearing problems, as it has four speech therapists and one audiologist to handle different cases. The importance of hearing in speech cannot be undermined, states Najah.

ICommunicate has a fully equipped hearing centre with an audiologist heading it; it is one of the few clinics in Oman with a full testing facility. Both, the speech and hearing, centre sees patients from zero to 80 years for a variety of problems

of North Indian frontier cuisineat Hormuz Grand’s

famous Qureshi, Bab-Al-Hind, Restaurant

adding to the effect, the mood at Qureshi’s is distinctly relaxed. A stress buster of a gastronomic kind…

Located on the ground level of Hormuz Grand, this plush new landmark at the Airport Heights is a perfect destination for all those who seek the best in their dining out experience. With the Muscat Expressway leading directly to the Hotel and even the main highway adding to the ease of driving to this impressive location, regulars will vouch that it is more convenient and even faster to reach Airport Heights than drive towards, say, Qurum.

The cuisine boasts a blending of international ingredients with a well-perfected mix of Indian spices to create distinctly ‘Qureshi’ dishes. Highlighting this as one of the important facets that have gone into making the Qureshi brand popular, Kapil

Aromatic flavours grab your attention even before you make your way to your seat and then hold you captive with a grand presentation. We gave in to the confluence of aromas and the quaint ambience of the restaurant; the latticed dividers adding to its aesthetic essence. With piped music wafting around and candlelight

– chunks of mildly marinated hammour fish; and ‘Dahi Kandari Kebab’ – a melt-in-the-mouth kebab shaped with hung curds as the main ingredient. The starters were accompanied by three separate sauces and a basket of crispy curled pappads.

For the uninitiated, this is one kebab that moves away from the traditional meats and vegetables to humble curds, to create a starter that is fresh in its appeal and delectable in its taste. You need to eat it to realise its gastronomic value. Grilled prawns starter is another must-try for seafood lovers like us.

On our main counter was the famous ‘Dum Lucknowi Biryani’, which is a heavenly equivalent of Indian mutton biryani. Sealed in earthen pot with the lid fashioned out of edible dough, there is something to be said about this Qureshi biryani that has earned it global repute. We also tucked into a breadbasket comprising missi roti (mixed flour bread), naans and kulchas with ‘Dal Qureshi’ - a rich creamy dish of whole lentils, which has, on its own, earned Qureshi restaurant many a fan - and ‘Murg Makhani’ or the famous butter chicken. The latter is unlike other butter chicken dishes, which are high on cream quotient. Another must try this!

And for the dessert…? Well, we had to give in to the lure of the much discussed ‘Shahi Tukda’, a sinful bowl of all things sweet and savoury. We topped that with ‘Narangi kulfi’ presented with ‘anjeer bandam ka halwa’ – to put it simply, it is mandarin kulfi ice cream with fig and almond halwa.

Whether you have a visit to Qureshi marked in your calendar for the coming days or not, do it today to relish this opulent narangi kulfi. Its vivid texture bursts in your mouth with its unique taste and flavour.A must try, for sure…

Nayyar, Food & Beverage Outlet Manager of Grand Hormuz, points out that the idea is to give diners more than what they expect. And the key is to ensure that the balance between international ingredients and the spices is just right, like the ‘New Zealand lamb chop in burra style (char grilled lamb chops)’, which establishes Qureshi brand’s novelty or the ‘Murghabi’ Tikka (duck tikka).

The restaurant has several novelties under its belt, with ‘secret spices’ topping the list. As Kapil explains, the restaurant relies on separate mix of spices, a secret blend of Qureshi spices, which are specifically mixed for different dishes and passed on to all Qureshi outlets. The idea is to maintain the Qureshi touch, even in traditionally popular dishes like butter chicken or ‘dal makhani’. The dishes are presented in a new avatar that is distinctly Qureshi and replicated in other outlets of the brand. Like the ‘Murg Peshawari Tikka’, which relied on spices

traditionally used in Peshawar. Interestingly, the restaurant, despite its popularity for dum cooking – Dum pukht – with mutton biryani topping the list, boasts an array of vegetarian dishes that have won it accolades from vegetarian patrons.

With dishes catering to both locals and expatriates who have a penchant for Indian flavours, the stress is on offering the best for their clients and this means keeping a check on the varieties and ensuring that the menu is not too elaborate. “We offer the best,” states Kapil, and we can vouch for that, having savoured some of Qureshi’s scrumptious dishes.

Our evening out at Qureshi featured dishes that ranged from tikkas and kebabs to biryani and shahi tukda. We got off to a right start with appetisers that included ‘Tandoori chicken’ – a succulent starter of tender chicken pieces; ‘Char grilled malai prawns’ – grilled prawns with a creamy texture; ‘Afghani hammour tikka’

A young teen is never satisfied with his/her looks and keeps experimenting, which has a direct impact on his/her eating habits and overall health, says Anu Bahl, Dietician and Clinical Nutritionist

Teenage Turmoil

Teenage brings with it a variety of emotions - rebellious, outspoken and independent

- which is compounded by raging hormones that make them difficult to handle. This is the age where they can easily fall into bad company, go through health problems, face peer pressure and to top it all endure constant nagging by over concerned parents regarding food habits and healthy lifestyle.

So, let’s take a fresh approach, dear parents, and make those changes in our habits and lifestyle. As goes the saying ‘I see I remember’.

Be a good role modelIf parents are fit so are there kids. Model healthy eating habits for your teenager - eat your fruits and vegetables in front of them and choose healthy snacks to eat together. Keep

plenty of nutritious options, such as fruit, vegetables, hummus, tahini, cheese and whole-grain crackers on hand. When hunger strikes, choose one of these healthy options.

Find out their weaknessEvery teen likes fast food and a drink to go with it - something that they can grab on the go. We cannot control what is readily available outside and cannot force them to carry lunch bags, but what we can do is change the look of food at home

Instead of elaborate meals, give them small nutrient-dense meals.

Try sneaking the food they don’t like into their favourite wraps, burgers or pizza.

Cut veggies into bite size pieces and mix with cheese, crackers and sauces.

Add fruit puree to a smoothie or bowl of oatmeal.

Stir vegetable puree into pasta

sauce, pizza sauce or soup. Cold thin cut veggies

with healthy dips are loved by youngsters.

Add frozen fruit, such as blueberries or strawberries, to pancakes, waffles and baked goods.

Teenagers dislike milk, so give them low fat options of soymilk, or milk products like laban, probiotic drinks.

Positive comments on their looksOne of the first things teenage brings with it is consciousness about looks. Use it to your advantage. Talk to them about their role models. Be aware of the signs of an eating disorder. If your teenager suddenly loses a large amount of weight or criticises her weight and appearance, complains of stomach-ache and headache, he\she might have an eating disorder. Consult your doctot immediately

Sleeping with contact lenses could cause vision lossA report by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 99% of contact lens wearers wash or store their lenses in unhygienic ways. The most common mistakes were sleeping or napping in contacts. Other mistakes that people reported were failing to replace contacts and cases as often as recommended; showering with their lenses in, which can allow bacteria from the water to get onto the lenses; keeping old contact lens solution in the case, which loses its disinfecting power, and just topping it off with fresh solution. Committing more than one of these unhygienic acts can further increase a person’s risk of infection. The report found that one third of contact lens wearers have had to go to the doctor at some point because of redness or pain in their eye.

Don’t eat ‘on-the-go’ If you are on a diet and watching your weight, put a check on your eating on-the-go habit, cautions a study, which tested the effects of various forms of distracted snacking - eating while walking, watching TV or conversing. It found that among women who were currently dieting, eating while moving had an undesirable effect - they ate substantially more than other dieters a short time later. The results indicate that dieters eating on the go may overeat later on in the day, as they may not be fully aware of what they’re eating, or they may feel like they ‘deserve’ more food later on because they were being active.

Psoriasis linked to depression riskPeople with psoriasis - a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the skin - are at greater risk of depression, according to new research. The exact cause of psoriasis is still unclear, but researchers believe it may be triggered by the immune system attacking healthy cells - particularly skin cells, causing what is known as plaque psoriasis. Although researchers are unable to pinpoint exactly why individuals with psoriasis are at greater risk of depression, they hypothesised that it may be down to stigma associated with the skin disease. Their advise: “Psoriasis is not contagious.”

Happiness is contagious?A study has affirmed what many of you would have already known… Surrounding yourself with good moods and good friends may be great for your health, states a study. Researchers used methods similar to the types scientists use to track the spread of disease, to see just how moods spread between the teens and their social networks. The results showed that those who had more friends with healthy moods reduced the teen’s chance of developing depression, and even increased the likelihood of the teen recovering from depression. Researchers also learned that having friends who suffer from depression doesn’t effect the mental health of the friends surrounding them.

Skipping blood pressure pills may raise heart failure riskPatients who frequently fail to take prescribed blood pressure-lowering medications may be more likely to be hospitalised for heart failure than people who only miss pills occasionally, according to a recent study. Researchers compared people who rarely took their prescribed daily drugs, with patients who used the pills 26 percent to 50 percent of the time and found that the latter were 17 percent less likely to be hospitalised for heart failure. The risk was 34 percent lower for individuals who took their medicine at least 75 percent of the time. The worst off were people who took their drugs no more than 25 percent of the time; they accounted for 46 percent of heart failure patients. People sometimes skip their medications because missing a dose doesn’t make them feel sick.

Steroid injections of back pain have limited benefitsSteroid injections, a common treatment for lower back pain, may have limited benefits, says a report based on a review of 38 placebo-controlled studies. The injections are used to relieve pain from radiculopathy and spinal stenosis. Researchers reviewed 30 studies involving radiculopathy and eight trials involving spinal stenosis, and observed that within weeks of receiving epidural corticosteroid treatment, pain subsided and function was restored by a fractional amount, but that those results were null within three months’ time.

Ahoy…dolphins

The thrill of cruising along Oman’s scenic coastline is a fulfilling experience all by itself, with the azure waters opening up the panorama of blue horizon,

broken, rather adorned, by interesting rock formations. Add to this scenic delight a school of frolicking dolphins, and that thrill is trebled for sure. For there is an element of stress-relief in the visual grandeur of dolphins making little unified leaps with the cylindrical snout adding to their cuteness factor.

Oman’s waters hold myriad such treasures, with tour operators offering exciting packages and options to witness such delights from close quarters. Experienced fishermen, who control the boats and catamarans dedicated for water tourism, carry a wealth of knowledge about Oman’s underwater life and know just where to anchor, so to say, to make the most of a dolphin-watching trip.As the smooth grey backs of the dolphins’ surface on the sombre blue waters, almost soaking up the colours, it takes only a minute or two to train, even a first-time visitor’s eyes’, to capture their deliberate leap. stage performance as little groups of dolphins in twos and more, show off their leaping skills in unison, seemingly halting in air for a round of applause from spectators lining up the fronts of their vehicles. There is an element of regal grandeur in their frisky moves and the viewer is not disappointed as the show continues all around the boats, presenting you with memories to cherish.

According to the Ministry of Tourism website (www.omantourism.gov.om), dolphin shoals visit the shores of Oman in large numbers. While Muscat and Musandam are famous for dolphin watching, this pastime is also possible in areas like A’Sharqiyah South, Al Wusta and Dhofar. One of the popular destinations for dolphin watching is Old Muscat and there are several tour operators offering a range of sea tour options, with dolphin watching topping the list.

One of the most accessible parts of the coast of Oman lies directly off Muscat, making it easy for residents and visitors to include dolphin watching in their weekend or holiday itinerary. Several tour companies operate their sea tour services from here, including

dolphin-watching trips, which have become very popular over the years. While specific Dolphin Assisted Therapy has proven to be effective in many a case, even watching them in their natural habitat, during their energetic feeding sessions, is believed to be stress relieving.

Oman waters attract Indian Ocean Dolphins, the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, Risso’s Dolphins, Common Bottlenose Dolphins, Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins, Rough-toothed Dolphins, Pantropical Spotted Dolphins, Striped Dolphins, Spinner Dolphins and Long-Beaked Common Dolphins. The most commonly encountered species off Muscat are

spinner dolphins, which are known to hold the viewers’ attention with neat spinning leaps. Although dolphin watching is a year-round activity, there are chances of no-show if some big fish is lurking in the water, says a tour operator. Dolphins, apparently, love to feed on sardines, which is what brings them up to the surface to present a show for tourists and visitors.

Zit that…

Troublesome teenage acne has a way of leaving its mark on your face. The more you pop them, the more tenacious they become, leaving behind dark scars and pockmarks as a reminder of the grim act of bursting the oozing zits before their time.

Agreed, the urge to gingerly hold the zit between the fingers and slowly squeeze it out is difficult to suppress and you are bound to give in to it every time you face the mirror. But this not only aggravates the pimple and prolongs its lifespan, it even retains its hold on the face as a scar.

So how do you get ready for the day when you are greeted with a breakout of zits on your face? While makeup is an answer, dermatologists’ caution against applying any makeup over a just popped pimple. They warn that it may not only aggravate the condition further, but also lead to skin infection. Makeup needs to be subtle enough to blend easily and effective enough to cover scars from any previous zits. To begin, prep your skin, and make sure your brushes and even your hands are clean before you touch your face. Also, ensure that the make up you use is of good quality.

Makeup to the rescue to cover those stubborn

acne scars

August 201540

1. Keep a moisturiser handy at all times, even when you have a pimply face.2. Use an oil-free primer, as it will help absorb excess oils and create a smooth base to apply the makeup. 3. Follow that with a foundation – ideally liquid foundation – that is made for acne-prone skin. Look for foundations with ingredients such as salicylic acid, which not only cover the problem areas, but also work to get rid of them in the long run. Also, ensure that the foundation matches your skin tone to give you a solid base. 4. Follow that with a creamy concealer on the difficult spots, as foundation alone may not be effective in

covering up the blemish. Choose one that is two shades lighter than your skin tone; pat it on the affected area. 5. Next comes the setting powder to hold the foundation and concealer in place. 6. Remember that oil-based products will only add shine and highlight the problem; it is best to use matt bronzer to lightly dust over your cheekbones and temple area. Beauticians also recommend adding a mist of water over the powder and letting it air dry to get a more natural finish.7. Blemish or otherwise, your skin needs a blush. Opt for a natural coloured one

Massage is therapeutic and relaxing too, as FACES team experienced at the well appointed I Spa

The mere mention of the word ‘spa’ conjures up images of total relaxation and it was with great anticipation that we scheduled an appointment at the newly opened I

Spa at the Hormuz Grand Hotel, Muscat. Tucked away on the lower mezzanine level, the Spa and the gym are designated an exclusive space to themselves, ensuring that guests are not disturbed.

Soft lighting, melodious low music and the aromatic fragrance of warm oil welcome you as you enter the Spa. The ever-courteous receptionist and therapist seat you and offer a welcome drink. If there are any queries, the Spa Manager, Ganyaphak Aotarit, who is fondly called May, is there to answer. If you are a first-timer, keep an extra five minutes to fill an information form so that your treatment time is not cut short. Going through the Spa Menu, the description of one massage reads better than the other. However, we quickly gravitated to Aromatherapy Body massage, as we were keen on a gentle relaxing massage.

We were whisked away to one of the eight treatment rooms and that is where the magic began. Prior to the massage, the masseuse cleaned the feet, initiating the process of relaxation. The tranquillity and peaceful atmosphere slowly work their magic along with a steady rhythm and pressure of massage that kneads away the stress, relaxing the mind along with the body. The slim and petite frame of our therapist was misleading; her strength and stamina totally took us by surprise.

We hope to visit the Spa again, soon, and, this time around, opt for a facial or back tension relief.

A quick background I Spa is the leading operator of luxury spas in Thailand with operations in China. This is its first venture into the Middle East. It offers time-honoured treatments delivered in the comfort of the 21st century.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO START WEARING MAKEUP?

Blame it on the media obsession with celebrities or the easy accessibility to cosmetics, the temptation

to dab makeup begins very early on for many girls. It may simply be about copying their mother, aunt or

an older sister and giving vent to their makeup fascination with the items lying around the

house.

While experimenting with beauty products is, usually, more of a prank,

or, perhaps, a girly phase for little girls, some as young as ten, it is the desire to wear makeup while going out at that age that should be checked. For pre-teen girls and even those who are under 15 have very delicate skin and makeup could damage it, if not rob innocence from their face.

Fresh-faced look has an eternal appeal, more so for tweens who are yet to grasp

the dos and don’ts of makeup. Ideally, makeup should not feature in a young girl’s routine until she is 15. Best is to begin with a light makeup and understand that the objective is not to look like your favourite celebrity. Granted that makeup can cover blemishes and smoothen or accentuate the facial features, but no makeup manufacturer has yet come up with a product that can change facial features permanently.

A little education about the whys and how’s of makeup and skincare routine, involving the importance of taking the makeup off before retiring to bed, is a must before venturing into the makeup zone.

As with every season, the Mango collection highlights different trends. For one, the Boho style has not abandoned the autumnal season; in fact, this macro-trend has been

reinventing itself in the last few seasons and is, again, making its mark with long maxi dresses.

Mango offerings this season also include ponchos, capes and an abundance of texture in the designs. Tassels predominate as a throwback to the 70s, while flared jeans, maxi coats and chiffon kaftans come across as proposals for a more sophisticated style with lightweight and elegant garments.

The underground trend adds a more rock-inspired and youthful air. Tulle mini-dresses, biker jackets, chokers and fur coats, synthetic in most cases, represent a more unruly side of the winter season.

The collection also presents army style combined with masculine ouches. This trend is reflected in visible buttons, fitted suit jackets and maxi coats designed in greens and navy blue.

ALE ZADJALE EXPLAINS THE HIGHS OF MAKING IT TO SEPTEMBER COVER OF FASHION MAGAZINES

Fashion magazines are still alive and every September

marks the most important time in every fashion

lover’s life; it’s the season change and it’s when those magazines are packed with

the hottest trends, stories and topics for the next six months.

Even though another season change takes place in December/January it’s not as impressive, because September marks the return to the routine life whilst embarking on new journeys - schools, universities, etc., are all back and the majority of the world is chained to work around them and

there is no snow/cold weather like December/January.

What does it mean to land a September cover? EVERYTHING!

Landing a September fashion cover is basically a way of saying ‘I made it’ a less hot version of picking up a CFDA or Grammy. In 2012, Vogue released their biggest issue of all time to mark an anniversary and the issue counts as an achievement for Vogue and their cover girl, Lady Gaga.

This issue immediately becomes the highest selling of the year and the credit gets to your name. Miley Cyrus, Rita Ora, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift are all September cover stars but this year the reigning queen is non-other than, Beyoncé, who landed the ultimate September cover of fashion’s most important magazine, Vogue.

If the silhouette of a car could be indicative of its power and performance, the spotlight would

be on the new Infiniti Q70, which meets the mark perfectly. Its inviting sleek and fluid lines create an impression of luxury that is meant to invoke envy among onlookers. Like our white machine, which shimmered in the afternoon sun, earning second look from office-goers in the large parking lot of Hatat House.

This redesigned Infiniti Q70 offers a different type of flagship luxury that extends to its plush interiors and its

excellent performance. ‘Feel luxury invigorated, not merely accelerated’, reads the booklet, defining the possibilities of its driving ease and comfort.

Behind the wheels of this car there is a sense of serenity and security that urges you to keep driving, seeking lanes that are empty and beckoning. There is a smoothness factor that adds to the feel of fun drive…one that urged us to go on a seemingly endless test drive. The Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation offers simple interface for increased ease and confidence, which

August 201548

is what guided us to some quiet spots, even during the busy morning hours. With Intelligent Cruise Control you are assured of being on the right track at the right speed as it slows you down when faced with traffic; it accelerates back to desired speed when clear.

The Predictive Forward Collision Warning not only scans ahead, it also monitors other vehicles that are in front of you, giving you enough time to manoeuvre the car away from potential danger. Another safety feature is its Forward Emergency Braking, which

detects vehicles ahead in the travelling lane and applies the brakes to help minimise a collision – even preventing one, if possible. What is more, the Lane Departure Prevention ensures that the car does not, unintentionally, drift out of your lane. There is also Blind Spot Prevention, which will alert you about the vehicles that you cannot see and even intervene

to avoid a collision. Other safety features include Backup Collision Intervention and Around View Monitor.

Comfort and ease are assured with a variety of features, ranging from climate-controlled seats and Bose Studio Surround t welcome lighting and smart beam assist. The Infiniti Controller allows you to command the technology the way you want it, with the Infiniti Intelligent Key ensuring that your car is custom-tailored for you. Whether it is the seat positioning, the outside mirrors or the steering wheel settings, your Q70 will meet all your requirements even before you take the key out.

Performance is guaranteed with its exclusive VVEL (Variable Valve and Event Lift) technology, which tunes valve lift and timing to give quicker engine response and a broader torque curve with enhanced economy. Fuel efficiency is part of the deal, resulting in a stirring 329 horsepower while achieving up to 9.01/100km.

With infinite options for a great drive in the most secure environ, our date with Infiniti Q70 turned into a sheer driving indulgence

Teenage crush

SPEA

KIN

In that first flush of youth, how can you tell if what you are feeling is love or if it’s simply a case of

teenage infatuation...

‘Have you got a girl/boy friend?’In the ever complex world of teens, it is common to face such unwarranted quests from adults who are quick on the uptake to assess the love lives of teens, with the bottom-line, rather the insinuated idea, being that it is bound to be infatuation. With the social media robbing the earlier telltale signs of romance – from passing love notes and inscribing intertwined hearts to pulling petals of daisies to loves-me loves-me-not chants – parents may not have an inkling of their teen’s emotional status, but dismissing any crush as an infatuation may not be the right start.

According to an online teen website, in the early teen years, love could be all about having fun, getting to know the other person or even simply about learning to share. In the initial days, dating might be seen as a status symbol, but, towards the end of the teens, it may be all about commitment. Parents, however, are wont to see all things teens as transient and might want to see their teen meeting other girls/boys to explore their emotions and get an understanding of their feelings.

While the initial flush of emotions might be blamed on the increase in hormones like dopamine and serotonin, infatuation is not exclusive to teens alone;

it is not a passing phase, one that is buried in the wake of early adulthood.

Infatuation, as psychologists point out, has no age bar. An online psychology-themed blog has conceptualized the idea of love based on

a set of research-driven questions that affirm if it is indeed love or not. The following two sets of

questions are created to measure the dimensions of infatuation and love, which is expressed as

attachment.

To assess your attachment or infatuation level, rate each question, for your current love interest, on the following scale:

1 – Strongly disagree2 – disagree3 – Somewhat disagree4 – Neither agree nor disagree 5 – Somewhat agree 6 – Agree 7 – Strongly agree

MIND & BODY

REBELLIOUS, MOODY, DIFFIDENT…TEENAGE IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX EMOTIONAL STAGES OF ONES LIFE

With films and books fuelling the ‘teenage rebel’ notion, the idea that rebellion is an ingrained part of teen years has become a rule rather than an exception. It is common to dismiss emotional outbursts among teens as a part of that rebellious streak; even a show of moodiness might get labeled as rebellion of another kind.Teenage is, indeed, the most misunderstood phase of human life. The confusion associated with the physical and emotional changes, brought on by the flood of hormones, is inescapable, but not necessarily expressed as rebellion or moodiness. While parents might have to struggle with their teens’ emotional seesaw, ranging from angst and moodiness to even indifference, it is not an indication of how a teen will turn out.But people are wont to dismiss all teens as rebellious, some even adding an image of danger to it by calling them anti-social or anti-establishment. Experiments with smoking and drinking, which are naturally seen as bad behaviours, get tones of criminality when seniors define it, many having forgotten their difficult teen years when everything was brushed under the heavy ‘its-a-teen-phase’ carpet. As psychologists point out, rebelling in teenagers is often symbolic and, usually, the behaviour worsens if there is nagging or disapproving parent. Most want to look grown up and even impress their peers with their rebellious streak. It is their way of asserting their independence. And, well, as one behaviour expert notes, teenagers have reason to be confused, as they are part of the adult world in a biological sense, but do not enjoy the liberty to do most of the things that adults can. While rebellion might be seen as asserting individuality or demonstrating an element of independence, it could have several setbacks for the teens themselves. Parents need to understand that some rebellious behaviour could lead to their teen’s self defeating behaviour, even harming their own self interests.

Make the most of your small flat with some tips and tricks to create an impression of comfortable open

spaces in your living area

With many a new flat going the so-called shoebox way, space has become a major constraint for occupants who have to put brakes on their furniture/furnishing purchases. Even studio flats have, literally,

cut the corners, making it all the more difficult to fit more than a bed in it. But with gadgets dictating home trends and entertainment becoming the focal point of a home, some things are must-haves in a home - space or otherwise.

The spotlight, then, is on space management, to not just make your house look inviting as you return home from work in the evening, but also accommodate your little purchases. While interior decorators have their own modus operandi to go about this business, you too can push the walls of your imagination to create space with some easy tips and tricks.

Here’s how…Create an uncluttered centreSpace can be deceptive; rather, it can make itself appear scarce in a cluttered

room. If the centre of the hall is in order, there is a sense of spacious feel, giving the room more breathing space. Make sure that you do not place a lot of things at the centre; opting for a sofa cum bed in the living

room could help.

Buy a wall-mounted televisionAnother way to ensure that the centre is devoid of clutter is to buy a wall-mounted television set, which will, further, ensure that you watch your favourite shows from a safe distance. Most television sets come with a wall-mount shelf

system, providing you ample space to store your receivers and gaming consoles.

Add dividers Among the current crop of flats that are available for rent in the capital, few, if any, are fitted with separate dining rooms. While a creative divider could help in that direction, the trick is in finding a dining table that is not bulky and can fit into space created. You could turn a bookshelf into a divider, so as not to infringe on the limited space, or even fit a ceiling-to-bottom curtain that can divide your space and give you an extra room. Interestingly, you could make your own dining table by creating a bench from small cupboards on one side of the dining table and supplementing the other side with chairs. You could, in fact, make your own table too, with some DIY tools and a little imagination.

EMake more room in your bedroomOne of the easiest ways of creating space in your bedroom is by opting for bunk beds in children’s room. The space thus created could be used for a study table or you could set up your worktable. Bunk bed also gives you additional space beneath, to store bedroom items like extra pillows and blankets. Additionally, opting for open shelves will give you the liberty of doubling them as desks and storage areas for your books or laptop.

Storage ideasMake the most of your wardrobe space by using hanging rails to hold your daily wear. Clothes on hangers occupy less space than those folded and stacked

Teens trends ………………………........…59

2015

With the majority of teens declaring that the ‘Facebook’ is dead for them, there is no telling what really holds the interests of the social media savvy youth today. For Facebook still boasts a strong teen membership,

one that is growing by the day, with few, if any, subscriber actually closing his/her account. While there is no immediate statistics to specify the number of teens visiting any particular social media site, an online report has researched the trends as follows:

Facebook: Most of the teens today would have gotten initiated into this popular networking site in their middle school by faking their date of birth, but the same has lost its veneer now. As one youth put it: “It is like an awkward family dinner party we can’t really leave.” What is popular, though, is the use of Facebook messenger option and the ‘Groups’, which are relied on in the college.

Instagram: Although not all teens are on Instagram, the ones who are, use it regularly. It is the element of anonymity of liking and tagging on Instagram that has made it popular; besides the knowledge that it has yet to engage the so-called ‘older generation’.

Page 57: Faces Oman 103

55August 2015

Twitter: Many teens claim that they do not understand the point of Twitter. While some like to be searched, others do not; it is also harder to find friends on it.

Snapchat: Accept it or not, Snapchat is becoming the most used social media network among teens today. While Instagram is about posting the best, or rather the cutest pictures, Snapchat encourages users to post photos and videos as it happens, including the bad and the so-called ‘fugly’. What adds to the excitement is that there is less social pressure, as there is no search option to find older photos or videos.

Tumblr: As per online reports, Tumblr is very popular among teens, more so as it has yet to reach older users. Subscribers can be totally anonymous and also customise their profiles to their liking. They can follow - and be followed - anyone, while posting whatever that interests them. It has been described as a secret society in which everyone is in, but no one talks about.

YouTube: This is a popular site for teens seeking specific channels and programmes. Research into teen habits has shown that YouTube has replaced the amount of time teens spend watching television owing to the high quality of original content.

7. Know who your customers are: A little market research will help you know if you are on the right track. Talk to people to get an idea about your intended service or product.8. Know your competition too: When researching about your customer base, also take time to understand your competition, as you need to offer them something that is better than what they have been getting. 9. Do not hesitate to seek help: While the importance of a mentor cannot be undermined, it would also help to talk to people with experience in your circle. Another tip to follow is to hang out with people who are on the same wavelength as you.10. Success does not come instantly: Success is not like

Teentrends

Check out what is trending in your teen’s

life…

Did you know your teen is spending most of his/her pocket money on food? Yes, according to an online survey, food, rather eating out with friends, is where most of the money goes.

Although teens today have diverse interests, there are certain common likes and interests that have been compiled as teen trends, a few of which are listed below.

Teens are spending a big chunk of their money on food, followed by clothing and accessories, and games.

An increasing number of teens, particularly males, are said to prefer to shop online.

Who would have thought that being ‘smart and nerdy’ would ever be considered cool…? Well, it is now.

SnapChat app, which allows teens to send instant photos to friends that disappear after six seconds, is a rage. What makes it popular for them is the fact that if someone takes a screenshot of the photo, the app notifies them immediately.

Interestingly, amateur street photography is big among teens. Oman’s heat may not be suitable for jackets, but if trends

matter, varsity jackets are on the cool list. Big, pronounced eyebrows…that is the new beauty statement among

young teens. League of legends (LOL) is wowing all teen gamers.

This multiplayer online battle arena video game has teens glued to their sets.

Surprisingly, or maybe not, Pokemon still has a big say on the gaming scene.

But surprise, surprise…no makeup selfies are changing the way teens pout (so-called duck-face) in front of their mobile phones.

Tank/crop tops is all for teens who like casual fashion. Roaming the local area/city centre

with friends, without a real agenda, has a coolness factor that cuts across all generations.

But after all is said and done, teens claim that they ‘hate things that are cool.’

Calling all Harry Potter fans… A Kickstarter campaign has been created for a device called the Maguss Wand, which allows people to duel in real life. Players can cast spells, with specific wand motions dictating different spells; the motion is sensed by the other player’s badge and consequently, the smartphone app the badge is attached to. Players can also duel online, casting spells at their own badge, which are then transferred via the Internet to the enemy’s app. Users can also move up in levels, with more spells being available as the player moves up

Now license plates for drones

With reports of US commercial pilots sighting as many as 650 drones close to their aircraft to the Federal Aviation Administration, safety has become a major issue. To help curb this problem, researchers are testing a kind of license plate for drones, making the operators accountable to the FAA. The ‘license plate’, being called LightCense, uses a series of bright LED lights attached to the bottom of the drone, which blink in a unique pattern and could be detected by law enforcement, identifying the owner of a drone. The series of lights can be decoded by a smartphone app or specialised camera, providing immediate accountability for any drone that has wandered into an area it shouldn’t have.

Movies BooMoChill OutAries Routines are, often, part of every day life, but recently you have been stuck in a bit of a rut. This month will finally make you realise that your life has become one long routine, and that you desperately need to change it. Identify which routines you need to change to be able to sustain a comfortable standard of living. Handing in your notice at your job may not be the best choice, and might just have disastrous consequences.

Taurus You may have just come back from your vacation, and you may be overwhelmed with work piled on your desk. Do not fret; get started right away. Focus on strengthening relationships within your own family. Try to spend quality time with your family and perhaps a long weekend break with your family might be the best way forward.

Gemini You can be a bit of a risk taker at times, but this is not the month to get involved in any risky ventures, whether it is business, work, health or wealth. If you are self employed or run your own business, you may have a run with a friend or colleague. Remember friendship and work may not always mix, and a manager will always be your manager. Your bank balance is looking good.

Cancer You have had some great time this summer with your family, and you made some changes to your home. Now is time to take stock of what you have and what you have done. Your top priorities for September will be work and health. New opportunities are on their way and you need to be ready for them. You may have to work a little bit harder to take advantage of the current opportunities but it will be worth it.

Leo Actions of some family members may be a bit unpredictable during the month of September. You like to be the leader, but sometimes things just do not happen the Leo way. You are so preoccupied with yourself sometimes that you forget the fact that others have a life too. You need to take weekend breaks and make health a priority. Many Leos do suffer with heart problems and you are not an exception.

Virgo Your thoughts this month will be strongly focused on work and financial issues. You have spent a little too much money this summer, and your bank balance may be looking a bit depleted. You really need to review some of your financial commitments. On a day-to-day basis you may be doing okay but you need to plan your future.

Remember that your home is greatest asset, and start making some plans now.

Libra You have love written all over your horoscope this month. If you are a single Libran don’t be surprised if a new love comes into your life, and completely sweeps you off your feet. Love will enter your life everywhere and you will take that loving feeling into the rest of your life. It will even affect your professional life, and colleagues at work will notice that you have a new glow.

Scorpio Sometimes you tend to ignore your needs and passions. But remember it is not always easy to keep all of that passion under wraps. Your needs, emotional and physical, seem to be turning more into cravings as they have been locked up for such a long time. You do have a tendency to see yourself as a bit of Jekyll and Hide character but that is true for most of mankind. It is about time you had some time out.

Sagittarius This month will be all about work, and furthering yourself in work or in your business. Your professional life may feel a bit stale, but it has nothing to do with workload. You are sort feeling a bit down when it comes to work, and your business. The problem is your attitude is affecting others around you as well. It is time to go on a charm offensive.

Capricorn Business and work might be a bit slow during September and this could impact your financial status. But have some special plans for October 2015 so you may want to keep economic outlay to a minimum. If you have your own business you need to be extra careful. Things will not grind to a halt but things can be quieter than normal so it is better to be prepared.

Aquarius You are fascinated by new technologies coming into the market, but assess if you really do need all of the techno stuff. Your home will be important to you this month. Your home is already very comfortable as it is but you may want to consider making it even more user friendly. Finances might be a bit limited and for once you will have to do some of the work yourself.

Pisces If you are thinking of going on a long trip, there are chances you might become the leader of the trip. If you decide to not go off on that trip, your work experience will completely change so there will be change in your life one way or the other. Your work experience can even change somewhat dramatically and might even involve a relocation to somewhere different in the country, or perhaps even the world.

The suspect was easy to find though, as he was already serving time on an unrelated arrest the same night. He told cops that he entered the school searching for a phone to call his grandmother and when that didn’t work, he said he tried to contact her via Facebook on the concession stand computer.

Family breaks open tombFamily members of a dead teenager in Honduras were recorded rushing to smash open the girl’s tomb after they claimed to hear her screaming and clawing at her coffin. Neysi Perez, 16, was pregnant and newly married when she suddenly collapsed at her home and

began foaming at the mouth. Doctors declared Perez dead, and she was buried in her wedding dress. But her family says everything changed when they heard muffled cries from inside her tomb a day later. When they exhumed her, she was reportedly motionless and cold to the touch, but they brought her to a doctor in the renewed hopes that she might still be alive. It was of no use.

Harry Potter-themed classroom A teacher has created a magical world for her students in the classroom with hints of JK Rowling’s famed boy wizard. The terrific decor has been shared online and is causing a stir with fans. The teacher, Stephanie Stephens, made her classroom based on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Using the book’s different plot points, she has made her classroom a mix of everything that happened in the book - from the stone-patterned door posing as ‘Platform 9 3/4’ in King’s Cross Station, to potions on the shelves.

Weird NewsDating over the yearsWith each new decade ushering a host of new teen trends, dating has also undergone several changes

1950s - Relationships were all about ‘going steady’. A night out consisted of going to an ice cream parlour, drive-in movie, or even a record shop.

1960s - The highlight of dating in the 1960’s was the actual date. Etiquette, however, demanded that boys pay for all dates and girls weren’t to seem more intelligent than their date.

1970s - 70’s was all about being young, wild, and free. Teens out dating would stay out all night at a disco club or at someone’s house listening to music.

1980s - During the 80’s, dating was becoming more informal. The guy would, however, still call the girl on her home phone in order to talk and plan a date.

1990s – Internet became a staple in teenage dating in the 90’s. Downloading music from the Internet and making a CD was considered the sweetest gesture during this time. Teens usually met up at the roller skating rink for dates or rented movies to watch together.

2000’s - This decade has seen some drastic changes. Online dating became popular and long distance relationships became a trend among teenagers. ‘Talking’ became the new word for dating, although it was more about texting rather than face-to-face communication.
