Initial concept Final concept

The initial concept for this project has not strayed too far from the final concept I have chosen to create, the difference is in the choice of presentation.

Originally the idea was to design an online publication that would increase mental health awareness amongst teenagers and young adults. By creating a publication, my intentions were to carry out several, editorial style interviews with accompanied photoshoots of individuals suffering with mental health. I wanted to document their stories, journies, and accomplishments. This flourishing idea was showcased in a moodboard designed at the beginning of the semester. Aspects of this moodboard were followed through to the final decided concept.

Initial concept Final concept

Face Yoga is an online expression. A collective which explores the suppressed nature of mental health, within relation to skin. This project incorporates photographic outcomes, creative written pieces, illustrations, artwork, as well as voice and musical elements.

This collective aims to portray how the skin and mind correlate and the effects of skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis and localised morphea on a person’s mental health, and self-esteem. Whilst exhibiting personal emotive written works from myself and others that will engage readers, and potentially inspire them to relax, be less self-critical and practise more self-love.

This is the brief description of my online collective/platform that can be viewed on the website itself under the heading ‘about.’ I felt the need to include an about section, in order for readers to comprehend the aims and objectives of the online space. This section should help the target audience identify that this is not a chatty blog, or an editorial publication but a collection of inspiring and heart felt content, all responding to the focus on the mind and our skin.

Page 10: Face Yoga Digital Process Book

Due to the wide narrative and exploration of diverse subject matter, this online collective is not so niche, but will appeal to a variety of individuals. I hope that this project inspires, motivates and compells people of all ages. Especially young adults and milennials, as I feel his age group are more susceptible to mental health matters than the elder generation. I will primarily target milennials as social media is imperitive to their everyday lives, and they are constantly online and interactive.

My aim is to convey a positive, and influential message on a format that can be viewed anytime the reader wishes to escape from their hectic worlds and busy minds.

The graphics included in my project will be a series of illustrated works by artist Scott Donohue, alongside a set of collages I am designing myself. I wanted to form a connection with the artwork featured on the collective, and the creator behind each piece. Scott is an emerging British contemporary artist currently working as a specialist mentor at Northumbria University. I decided to feature Scott’s artisitic creations in this project as he greatly connects with the subject of mental health in relation to skin disorders. Having expressed gratitude and excitement towards being involved in a project close to his heart, Scott has decided to join the Face Yoga phenomenon. Each feature will showcase the artists detailed drawings, and paintings with accompanied messages, and with Scott willing to share his story, Face Yoga can provide readers with an insightful delivery, full of his life experiences and mental health awareness.

Another contribution to the graphics aspect of this project, is 23 year old BA Hons Illustration graduate from Birmingham City University, Matthew. Matthew now works as a freelance illustrator in Liverpool completing several works for individual clients and agencies. Matthews creative style is very abstract, colourful, and detailed. From graphic design to freehand illustration, Matthew posesses a broad range of artistic skills. Growing up, Matt had quite a hard time at school and shared that he was bullied. He found that his extensive resilience, patience and creativity enabled him to escape through such experiences. As Matthew developed a strong awareness of his own mental health during this time, he felt this project was a key reminder of the importance of looking after ourselves.

Typography Typography is integral within this project, as it is an entirely digital outcome, there is no tangible aspect to it. I want to appeal to the target audience by using fonts and text that are sophisticated and modern. I occasionally want to include cursive text for quotations and pull quotes from interviews, but on the whole, the online collective will feature sans serif fonts and capital lettered titles.

The main body is Proxima Nova, an elegant font, and the title is Futura PT, simple capital lettered Sans Serif.

Layout designs: online publications

Having investigated into layout the styles and formats of online publications, I developed insight of proportion, scaling and alignment of text and image. To gain viewers attention online, a webpage must be eye-catching and easy to read. I incorporated various elements I liked from the above into my own project. The simplicity of the font in AnOther stood out to me, whilst the quirky text and layout in Flow magazine was complimented perfectly by simple, colourful graphics, and providing a comforting nature to the publication.

Why Skin | Mind?

Why not, why not try connect the two? I have always been obsessed (greatly interested perhaps) with skin, the texture, the imperfections, the adverse effects of a certain food, drink, vitamin on the skin. Why some react immediately to lots, and others simply don’t. I dreamed of growing up with smooth, clear, slightly darker skin that would look radiant and healthy, yet seemed to recieve quite the opposite. This project will appreciate and admire all skin types, all minds, and all works, to help form a collective of artistic and journalistic explorations.

Why Skin | Mind? How will I develop

this project?

I plan to create a short film clip that encompasses the worldwind that is our minds, when dealing with thoughts of unwanted subjects. I was inspired by the peculiar music video from singer Bjork’s, of the inside of her mouth. The filmatography and erie nature to the whole clip makes me want to achieve a similar narrative. Also, a spoken word clip with accompanying imagery is going to be designed, which will give viewers an alternative viewing experience.

Photographic Infuences

Mr El Bank and his ‘freckle series’ greatly inspired and creatively provoked the outcome of my work. His highly saturated, emotive photography of those with pigmented skin really influenced the style of my images. Although I will not use such a strong vibrancy and saturation in my own photography,

I admire the overall aesthic of his work.

The composure and eye contact of the models ensures each of Brock Elbank’s images are starkly unique and captivating. I will interpret a similar clean background in my images, to help accentuate the features of the models.

Influence and Inspire: Collage artist

Verging into a different realm of digital influences, Spanish artist Ernesto Artillo creates visually intriguing and intricate collages that combine elements of fashion, art, and design. I have been greatly inspired by the work of Ernesto for months, with his designs enabling me to re-establish my love for collage and decollage during this project. I wish to channel a dreamlike perspective through the edits of my original imagery, to create a similar aesthetic to Artillo’s captivating visuals.

The pastel, muted tones and soft lines will compliment the style and theme of my online collective, and connect directly with the tone of my written content. Aspects of cubism are also brought into his work, which I will try to implement onto selected taken imagery.

I aim to convey through the use of collages that our minds are complex, intricate yet delicate, and that we should handle them with care. Expressing artistic qualities through an editorial style portrait will allow me to communicate a less fashion focused theme and appeal specifically to a niche audience.

Kate Laverick

creative imagery

Page 43: Face Yoga Digital Process Book

creative imagery I selected Kate as my model as I loved her fiery auburn hair, fair skin and calming, centered perspective. She had never modeled before this shoot, and thats what I found most intriguing, as she seemed very natural, at ease and self assured in front of the camera. Kates porcelain, clear complexion made her fantastic to shoot, there was endless character and colour. In terms of make-up, hair, and styling, I kept it ultimately simple, as I wanted the photoshoot to showcase her natural style and look, and for her to feel comfortable in her own skin. I asked Katie to arrive at the location bare faced, without a hint of make-up, this she mentioned was difficult, as its an everyday routine.

I wanted to draw emphasis on her comfortable nature of being make-up less, and happy with her skin, with full grown eyebrows, and untouched, natural hair colour.

For the styling of my photoshoots, I have identified a minimal yet emotional sense. I invision all models to be bare faced, as this showcases the purity of the skin as well as exposing natural pigmentation and discolouration that wont be hidden with make up. Make up and hair will not be relevant for the photoshoots I carry out. I want to focus primarily on the emotion felt from the model, if that be from their composure, facial expressions, body language, mood that day, I want the shoots to be raw and powerful.

Titles

Face Yoga- (site title)

I decided to name the online collective ‘Face Yoga’ as it perfectly grouped together the skin and the mind. The title is aimed at being a light hearted way of suggesting that we should take a break, let our skin breathe, and let our mind shut off, almost like an ashtanga yoga class for your face!

Withdraw. ‘Fear’ (poem)

The title ‘Fear’ was born as I started drafting the first stance of the poem, not knowing exactly where it was heading but knowing it was about withdrawing from yourself. As the poem turned into a metaphoric explanation of someone’s fear, and fearful patterns of behaviour, I decided this title would encompass those feelings accurately.

Page 51: Face Yoga Digital Process Book

Complexity

The Diary of an overthinker

This was a relatively personal title as the diary entry was written from my own mindset and thoughts, and I am a critical overthinker. I want to be able to connect with an audience who also deal with a constant chattering mind, and let them realise they definitely aren’t alone. A somewhat humurous account of a morning in an overthinkers life.

Breathe

A network of confusion: ways to

simplify your life

I chose this title as I was inspired by the wonderful Australian publication ‘Peppermint.’ in which, life advice and mindful suggestions are given in simplistic, heart warming terms. I wanted to let my readers in on methods I find useful to de-stress, and unravel complications that aren’t nessesary.
