Completing the Lining

1. Sew a 1½" x 11½" blue pincushion print strip to opposite sides of (1) 11½" panel square. Press seams toward the strips. Repeat with a second panel square.

2. Fuse the 11½" x 13½" fusible fleece rectangle to the wrong side of 1 bordered panel referring to the manufacturer’s instructions. Place the 11½" x 13½" cream pocket lining rectangle right sides together with the fused panel square. Stitch all around, leaving a 3" opening on the bottom edge. Clip corners and turn right side out through the opening. Press edges flat. Hand-stitch the opening closed to complete the small panel pocket. Quilt as desired.

3. Select 6 different 2½" x 11½" pocket rectangles. Join on the long edges to make a pieced unit. Press seams to 1 side. Repeat to make a second pieced unit. Sew a pieced unit to the remaining bordered panel to make the large pocket panel. Press seams toward the pieced units.

4. Center and fuse the 11½" x 37½" rectangle of fusible fleece to the wrong side of the large pocket panel referring to the manufacturer’s instructions. Note: The pocket panel might extend at each end of the fleece. Do not trim at this time. Center the 11½" x 37½" cream pocket lining rectangle right sides together on top of the fused large pocket panel. Stitch along the top and bottom edges. Turn right side out; press edges smooth and flat. Quilt as desired. Trim to 37½" long.

5. Fold each 28" x 37½" lining rectangle in half on the 37½" edges and crease to mark the vertical center. Measure down 9" from the top edge and mark a line from side to side. Center and pin the top edge of the large quilted pocket rectangle along the marked line. Flatten and pin along the bottom and side edges. Topstitch along the pocket bottom edge to attach to the lining. Machine-baste at side edges. Mark lines 5" from each side of the center panel and stitch to make pockets. Stitch a second time to secure. Center the small pocket panel on the marked line on the second lining rectangle. Pin and topstitch in place on the side and bottom edges. Note: You may stitch pocket lines in the ditch of strip seams if you prefer.

6. Mark and cut a 1¾" square out of each bottom corner. Place the 2 lining rectangles right sides together and stitch the sides and along the bottom edge leaving a 6" opening on the bottom for turning later. Press seams to 1 side.

7. To shape the bottom corners, fold the lining so a side seam matches the bottom seam; stitch across the open edges. Repeat on the opposite bottom corner.

2. Fold long edges in to almost meet at the center crease; press again.

3. Unfold the top long edge of 1 strip and place 1 strip of fusible fleece along the fold line. Fuse in place.

4. Refold long edge, covering fleece. Fold in half on the creased centerline and topstitch along both long edges to finish 1 handle.

5. Repeat steps 3–4 to make the second handle.

6. Pin 1 handle end at the top edge of the tote back section 7½" in from the left side edge; machine- baste to hold. Repeat with the remaining end of the handle 7½" from the right side edge. Note: Be careful not to twist the handle.

7. Repeat step 6 with the second handle on the tote front section.

Completing the Tote

1. With right sides together, pin and stitch the tote front and back sections together along side and bottom edges. Do not stitch cutout edges at bottom corners.

2. Stitch bottom corners as per lining instructions to make sides and bottom of tote. Press seams open as much as possible. Turn the tote right side out.

3. Place the tote inside the lining with right sides together, keeping handles inside between the layers. Stitch around the top edge twice to secure.

4. Turn the tote right side out through the opening in the bottom of the lining. Hand- or machine-stitch the opening closed. Place the lining inside the tote. Poke the lining into the bottom corners and tack to hold in place. Note: You may add some machine quilting through all layers if you want to secure the lining to the outside of the tote in several areas.

5. Topstitch all around the tote top edge with handles up to complete the tote.
