The first wave of Indian immigrants arrived in South Africa as indenturedlabourers, followed by a second wave known as Passenger Indians - individualswho had paid their own fare. Being the last wave of immigrants to enter aBritish colony, the Indians saw themselves, and were perceived by others,as a homogenous group originating from India. The apartheid state as wellas anti-apartheid organisations saw advantages in this. Author analyses thisconstruct and shows how Indian identity is being transformed to meet thechallenges of the new democratic South Africa.
