CIEG I INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS

CIEG organised its first International Congress from 25 to 27 May 2016 under the overall theme Gender

Studies in Debate: Pathways, challenges and interdisciplinary perspectives. The event brought to the de-

bate the contributions of 270 researchers from different parts of the world, including 175 from Europe,

45 from Latin America and 50 from countries in North America, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Anália Torres, CIEG´s Coordinator, opened the Congress on 25 May welcoming the participants, reviewing

CIEG’s goals and stressing the need to develop and intersect gender, feminist and women’s studies.

On the same day the first Keynote address was delivered by Professor Margaret Abraham, from Hofstra

University, New York, USA and President of the International Sociological Association (ISA), under the

theme “Making a Difference: Addressing Gendered and Intersectional Violence”.

On 26 May, the Keynote Speaker Jeff Hearn, Guest Research Professor, from Örebro University, Sweden,

addressed the theme “On men, masculinities and gender power relations: A one-way transversal dialo-

gue with myself around some pathways, challenges and interdisciplinary perspectives”.

On the last Plenary Session, the invited Keynote Speaker was Miriam Grossi, Titular Professor of the An-

thropology Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, who delivered a talk on the

theme “Gender Studies and Feminist Academic Militancy in Contemporary Brazil”.

CIEG I INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS

During the three-day long event the following plenary Roundtables took place: Critical reflections on gen-

dered Inequalities; Gendered Violence: achievements, obstacles and challenges; Gender, human rights, fe-

minisms and LGBTQIA rights, gathering scholars from different backgrounds.

There were also six semi-plenary sessions addressing the topics: Gender studies and feminisms in southern

Europe; Rights, work and family; Gender equality policies: impacts and limits; Gender, women’s studies and

feminisms in Portuguese; Gender and Education; Gender and the Body. On 26 May, parallel sessions began

to take place, simultaneously, so participants could choose the theme that most interested them and parti-

cipate accordingly.

The closing session featured Catarina Marcelino, the

Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Project “IG-OS (Gender Equality, Odivelas and Seixal)” was promoted by

CIEG/ISCSP-ULisboa, under Dália Costa’s Coordination, in partnerships with

KS (Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities) and the munic-

ipalities of Odivelas and Seixal. It was funded by the European Economic

Area Financial Mechanism (EEA Grants) under the Programme

PT07 Mainstreaming Gender Equality and Promoting Work Life Balance, managed by CIG – Comissão para a

Cidadania e Igualdade de Género.

On 31 october, at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences, the Project´s final Conference took place. This

event aimed to present and dissiminate the project´s results and to present the outputs created. This infor-

mation can be found at the Project´s webpage at: http://www.igos-cieg.org/

The Project “Gender equality and life course: barriers and opportunities in

the first 15 years of the XXI century” aims to study and address gender

equality and gender discrimination, highlighting the connections between gender and life-paths/life stages,

placing Portugal in the European context. At the moment, the team is undertaking the analysis of national

and international databases as well as exploring official statistics to trace a portrait of the challenges and op-

portunities that women and men experience in different life-stages.

SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS

On 8 June, CIEG had the honour to welcome Professor Rosemary Deem -Vice Principal (Education) and

Dean of Doctoral School at the Royal Holloway, University of London. In the first part of the day Professor

Deem facilitated a workshop addressing the topic “Peer Review: what it is and how to do it”, in the after-

noon, the participants had a chance to discuss with Professor Deem and hear about “Writing for publica-

tion in international journals”. CIEG´s Coordinators and other members of CIEG as well as researchers

from other research units attended this Workshop.

From 6 to 8 of July, CIEG was represented at the IX Portuguese Congress of Sociology organized by APS—

Portuguese Sociological Association, that took place at University of Algarve. Anália Torres, CIEG´s Coor-

dinator, delivered a talk on the session Gender, norm and (dis)order. On the thematic sessions, CIEG was

represented with various contributions by Dália Costa, Cláudia Casimiro, Maria João Cunha, Helena

Sant´Ana, Bernardo Coelho and Diana Maciel. Cláudia Casimiro also Co-coordinated the thematic section

Families and Lifecourse. CIEG´s staff members also attended, participating in the exhibition area so that

CIEG´s activities, projects and other information could be disseminated.

The 3rd ISA Forum of Sociology - International Sociological

Association was held in Vienna between 10 and 14 of July.

This year´s theme was The Futures We Want: Global Sociol-

ogy and the Struggles for a Better World and CIEG was rep-

resented by Paula Campos Pinto, Cláudia Casimiro and Fáti-

ma Assunção who presented and made contributions to the

sessions as well as helped organize other sessions. The re-

searches Cláudia Casimiro and Fátima Assunção are part of

ISA`s Research Committees: Family Research - RC06 and

Participation, Organizational Democracy and Self-

Management - RC10, respectively.

From 12 to 14 of July the 5th Ibero-American Congress on

Qualitative Research took place in Porto. CIEG´s researchers

Cristina Pereira Vieira (Universidade Aberta, Porto) and Dália

Costa (ISCSP-ULisboa), along with Luísa Ferreira da Silva,

CAPP´s researcher, presented a communication on

“Racionalidades leigas da alimentação saudável das crianças -

um discurso no feminino”.

The Congreso Iberoamerican de Investigación Cualitativa en Salud. Ciudadanía y Transdisciplinariedad:

Tejiendo redes was held in Barcelona between the 5 and 7 of September. CIEG was represented by Dália

Costa, Cristina Pereira Vieira, Ana Sofia Neves and Joana Topa. The researchers organised thematic

roundtables, hold session´s moderation and presented oral communications and training sessions, under

the themes of Sexuality and Gender and Gender and Violence.

CIEG's researcher Paula Campos Pinto participated in the 5th annual conference of Alter , European Society

for Disability Studies, that took place from June 30 to July 1st at Stockolm University, under the

theme “Inclusion, Participation and Human Rights in Disability Research – Comparisons and Exchanges"

involving 120 participants from Europe, North and Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Paula Campos

Pinto, who was also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Conference, presented a paper entitled

“Invisible identities: A critical analysis of intersections of gender, culture and disability in the Maghreb”, out

of the research she has been conducting in this region on human rights, disability and access to social pro-

tection.

In this trip to Sweden, Paula Campos Pinto also gave a lecture to doctoral students during the 3rd Doctoral

School disABILITY MUNDUS, that took place at Upsalla University, June 27 to 29th.

Gender Equality Training Course

ISCSP-IFOR, in collaboration with CIEG, cre-

ated the 1st Edition of the Gender Equality

Training Course.

This Course aims to offer participants an

extended reflection and enhance their criti-

cal thinking as well as develop a deeper

understanding and gain some practical

skills on gender equality issues.

It is also expected that the participants will

acquire resources and skills to develop ac-

curate assessments and analysis of their

own organisations as a basis to build a more

equal context based on gender mainstream

in public policies and gender action plans.

The number of candidates for this Course

exceeded all expectations wherefore there

will be a 2nd edition of the Course right

after the 1st one, beginning on March

2017.

This 1st Edition began on 22 October 2016

and it will end on 4 February 2017.

Gender Equality Training Course

On 22 October, at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences, an Open Conference led by CIEG´s gender

equality expert Maria do Céu da Cunha Rêgo was held. This Conference was organised in order to create

an opportunity for the Course participants to meet Maria do Céu da Cunha Rêgo and benefit from her

long experience and knowledge on these matters. The theme for the Conference was “Why is gender

equality a good for everyone?”

GENDER IN DEBATE CYCLE

On 29 November at 6pm the next session of Gender in Debate Cycle will be held. Under the theme “Sexual

Harassment and Bullying in the work place”. Public Prosecutor Viriato Reis from Centre for Judicial Studies

and Professor Dália Costa team member of the study “Sexual Harassment and Bullying in the workplace” ,

developed by CIEG-ISCSP, and promoted by CITE, were invited as the guest speakers.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

On 11 October CIEG welcomed Professors Ann Ohman, Annelie Branstrom-Ohman, Hildur Kalman e Britta

Lundgren from the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS), Sweden.

ISCSP-ULisboa Vice-President Alice Trindade and CIEG´s Coordinator Anália Torres greeted the colleagues

and showed presentations introducing the Institute and it´s history as well as the activities developed by

CIEG and the goals achieved since it was created in 2012. The presentations were followed by queries and

answers after which the Umeå Centre for Gender Studies' Professors presented their work and activities.

The meeting ended on a high note, with plans for future collaborations.

On 12 September UMAR—União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta celebrated their 40th anniversary. On

the occasion CIEG salutes UMAR for their journey full of history, struggles, resistance and achievements on

women´s rights.

Here it is the moment captured on the celebration day with some of the pioneers/founders of UMAR of

which CIEG´s Coordinator Anália Torres and Manuela Tavares, both CIEG and UMAR´s board member, are

part of.

Studies Department to present a lec-

ture on “Feminisms in Portugal” at

the University of Lyon, France, with

the support of Camões Mission – In-

stitute for Cooperation and Language.
