Thank you so much to Home and School for purchasing medical weighing scales for the Youth Health Nurse. Accurate scales are an essential item in assessing students BMI. I really appreciate Home and School supporting this service for our students. Caroline Jones, Youth Health Nurse

Netball training has begun!

Wairua Warrior Adventure Race Wairua Warrior is a yearly obstacle course event held at Cable Bay Adventure Park just outside of Nelson which attracts racers from all over NZ. Teams, individuals and Elite racers can enter. Golden Bay teams included CrossFit Mohua, ITM Takaka and Golden Bay Community Health.

Most impressive result was Golden Bay High School student and CrossFit Mohua member 14 year old Oliver Gray, who came first in the Open Mens Individual 12km in a time of 1.20.36 His Dad Ben Gray came 3rd in the same race; 4 minutes behind Oliver.

A fantastic and inspiring achievement was another GBHS student, Joshua Scotland, completing the event after suffering a broken neck in 2015. He has religiously attended Crossfit for over 18 months and has made astounding progress in his strength and fitness. (submitted)

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Fundraiser

This group of Year 8 girls started their William Pike Challenge Community Service hours with a really successful fundraiser. They organised and held a bake sale for the

Westpac Rescue Helicopter outside Fresh Choice last Saturday.

The bake sale was a huge success, with many people simply donating money without buying any baking. Plenty of others sampled the delicious treat the girls had made too.

One grandfather from Auckland asked the girls if he could take their photograph because he was so impressed by how the youth in Golden Bay want to reach out and help others. He was hoping to inspire his grandchildren up in Auckland by this!

The girls raised a whopping $931.70 and plan to travel to Nelson to hand this over in person during our Staff Only Day this Friday.

Caving-middle earth Last Saturday me and seven other students went down middle earth cave with Mr Stevenson, Ms Wilkinson and Mr Mackenzie. When I woke up on Saturday morning it was pouring with rain and we thought caving wasn’t going to be on, but the weather turned out alright on top of the Takaka hill. It took us four hours to abseil, squeeze and climb our way down to the lunch spot, then four hours out jamming our way to the sun light. Over all we went 150m down under the ground! Thank you Mr Stevenson for taking us on such a cool adventure. By: Rosie

The Girls Team: Jen Sampson , Shaye Oates(captain), Marie Sampson and April Ma’a The Boys Team: Kai Dodson, Tomo Clere (captain), Ryan Gray and Kodie Dodson-Herron Both teams placed overall second in their respective team categories.

The South Island Secondary Schools Adventure Racing Championships, Gore

Thursday lunch time last week the NBS van

was packed with eight year 12 athletes,

two drivers, an absolute multitude of

race gear, copious food supply, tents for

all and a trailer with eight competition

mountain bikes. The weather from Takaka

to Lewis pass was wet and foul. However,

then it cleared up and the next four days

were very pleasant.

Competition day, Saturday, began at

6:30am in pitch black darkness for the

start of the first section; a 9km

mountain trek navigated through dense

bush on doubtful walking tracks. Many

teams got into difficulties and required

organisers’ assistance. Fortunately, our

girls team were map reading spot on but

the boys team at one stage had the

unenviable job of crawling through gorse

along what they laughingly say was an old

pig track to get back into the game; with

a loss of three competition points. The

boys then recovered magnificently to

power through the rest of the competition

in style. Meanwhile the girls

team were steadily progressing through

the 30 km of mountain biking, then the

kayak section, a portion of the second

7.3 km trek, finally the abseil to finish

with four minutes to spare at the 5:15pm

cut-off time. Unfortunately, the race

director gave any late teams coming in

before the cut-off an untimed allowance

to go and do the abseil and record an

extra

competition

point. This

cost our girls team an equal first place

position. The boys team gained a deserved

second place finish in their category.

The round trip was 28 hours driving with

the team time taken up with many, many

word games of "Mafia " (an

incomprehensible game to adults) a lot of

banter and laughing, some dubious singing

and stop overs at Dunedin's steepest

street, Moeraki Boulders and Hanmer

Springs hot pools.

Home tired, but very satisfied with their

efforts at GBHS bus bay at 6:30pm Monday.
