A Message from Grace

After so many snow days, we are all welcoming spring! In April, we’ll treat you to a delicious Tasting and three fascinating

Speaking of enriching Founders Hall, thank you to all who included donations with your spring registration. What a great way to help us fill the funding gap between the low fees you pay and our actual expenses. If you missed that chance, you’ll find more opportunities springing up in the front hall with our annual Spring for Things. See the back page for details. I am so grateful for your ongoing support.

Dining Room

Thanks to a team of dedicated members, our gardens will

soon be exploding with daffodils and poppies. Members are currently planting seeds for vegetables and herbs, some of which will be used in June’s Battle of the Chefs.

They can use more hands in the soil. No experience is necessary. All you need is a willingness to help during the busy spring and summer season. The benefits are beautiful!

SEMINARS

THE REAL STORY BEHIND RIDGEFIELD’S LANDMARK FOUNTAINFriday, April 20, 1 pmYou’ve driven past it countless times. Charlie Pankenier will tell you the real story of how our beloved fountain came to be--and how it has managed to survive. The cast of characters includes renowned architect Cass Gilbert, the ghosts of thirsty horses, a wealthy Lothario in Detroit, a possible curse, and a century-long snub by town officials.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: PRAIRIE ARCHITECTFriday, April 27, 1 pmArguably one of the world’s most famous architects, Frank Lloyd Wright developed his renowned “Prairie Style” in suburban Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. This session will highlight the design elements of Wright’s “Prairie Style”, and the famous homes and buildings he built. Replica furniture, artwork and design elements from Wright’s homes will also be part of the presentation. A long-time fan of Wright, Mark Weber served as a tour guide at the architect’s home and studio in Oak Park, Illinois for ten years prior to moving to Connecticut.

Founders Hall, a 501(c)3 public charity incorporated under the name Founders Hall Foundation, Inc., was established by the Couri and Goldstone families. The Foundation has an agreement with the town of Ridgefield to lease the land and run Founders Hall through 2022, with the option for future extensions. With continued support from generous people like you, the Foundation will run Founders Hall for generations to come.

DEVELOPMENT

Throughout April, you’ll notice paper flowers springing up on trees in the front hall and dining room. Each flower is inscribed with needs for items such as newspaper subscriptions, stamps, coffee and more. Will you spring for the cost of one of those items? If so, simply pick a flower, attach your monetary donation and give it to the front desk. We’ll use your donation to buy the item you choose.

You can make your donation individually or with a group of friends, classmates or exercise buddies. With your ongoing care and support, Founders Hall will bloom with great programs, classes and fellowship. Thank you for tending this very special garden.

SPRING FOR THINGS

ANTIQUE APPRAISAL & GOLD SALEWednesday, April 11, Noon - 4pm

Cost: $5 per item to benefit Founders hall

Think you may have a hidden treasure? Bring in up to five items and Jack DeStories from Fairfield Auction will appraise their value. Please bring patience as this is a popular event.

An appraiser from American Gold & Diamond Buyers will also be here to evaluate your unwanted gold, silver and diamond jewelry and watches and offer you a price based on current values. If you sell, you will receive cash; Founders Hall will receive a portion of the total proceeds. Please bring valid identification.

Thanks to all of you who responded so generously to our February appeal letter with a donation. We want to add an extra shout-out to those who decided to sustain Founders Hall with a monthly donation. We’re happy to report that the number of members giving monthly has almost quadrupled in the past month! Monthly donations provide a steady income we can rely on throughout the year, which makes it easier to plan and implement your programs. If you want to give monthly, it’s easy to set up on our website. Those donations are secure and flexible; you can change them at any time. What’s more, they will free you from our annual appeal cycle. Of course, however you give, we are always grateful for your support.

Thank you!

Marilyn Gordon, Anita Hiranandani, and Alice Learman at last year’s event.
