BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THE STERILE PROCESSING DEPARTMENT AND INFECTION PREVENTION Speaker: Peggy Prinz Luebbert, MS,MT(ASCP), CIC, CHSP, CSPDT

It is critical that all items used on patients are safe and do not transmit disease. This practice begins in the Sterile Processing Department. The Infection Preventionist can be a partner with the SPD in making certain that patients receive appropriately cleaned items. This seminar will describe effective rounding and tracer tools for evaluating infection prevention in SPD. These tools will cover protocols involving documenting and maintaining sterility of instruments including the use of sterilization packaging systems and other equipment. Environmental issues such as proper storage, air and humidity control will also be discussed.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS: USE AS INTENDED, HANDLE WITH CARESpeaker: David Jagrosse, CRCST, CHL

Identifying the “Intended Use” of a medical device is a responsibility of the manufacturer of the device. How the device is used becomes the responsibility of each user of the device. Members of the health care team need to be aware of best practices for how a device is to be handled at the point of use as well as how the device is to be processed before and after a procedure. This program focuses on how to handle power equipment, rigid endoscopes, surgical instruments and medical devices with care whether at point of use or during the cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, storing, and transporting. The discussion will include labeling requirements for single-use items and those that can be reprocessed. Processes that can lead to or avoid improper function or permanent damage will also be discussed.

WHEN INSULATION DOESN'T INSULATESpeaker: Lynne A. Thomas, BSN, RN, CGRN, CFER

Laparoscopic and robotic cases are predominate in most OR settings today and insulation defects can be pervasive in the instrumentation being used. What happens to the patient with the insulation on these instruments don’t insulate? The majority response is that of patient burns due to stray energy, only a few will peek under the insulation to realize there are other latent liabilities lurking.

Objectives:1. Name elements of inspection and

care for insulated instruments2. Describe negative outcomes caused

by insulation breaches
