Summarize the history of English settlement in new England, the mid-Atlantic region, and the south, with an emphasis on South Carolina as an example of a distinctly southern colony.
8-1.2 Vocabulary� Abandon- To leave behind or give up completely
� Colony- A settlement ruled by a distant country
� Convert-A person who has been persuaded to change his or her religious beliefs
� Persecute-To treat someone poorly or oppress them because of their race, religion or beliefs.
� Privateer-A professional pirate hired by a nation to attack ships of rival nations and steal valuable cargo.
� Profit-Money a business has earned after paying its expenses

� Conquistadors- Spanish explorers who conquered the Indian tribes of the Americas- specifically Mexico and Peru.
� Encomiendas- Large Plantation where the Spanish used natives as slaves

The Carolina Colonies Song!� San Miguel is Spanish, down in Georgetown Bay.
� They failed because of slave revolts; Chicora ran away.
� Frenchies had a fort they built, but they did not stay.
� On the ship they got hungry, and ate LaChere one day.
� San Felipe was the second try – the Spanish back to play.
� But Natives got real mad at them and chased those men away.
� Albemarle was the English, but in the swamp they did not stay.
� So Charles Town became their home – the English win – hooray!

A Little More About that Southern Colony…Charles Town�On March 24, 1663 the British government, led by King Charles II, issued a charter to Eight Lords Proprietors for the land south of Virginia to Florida
�The charter gave them almost unlimited power over the land.

8 Lords Proprietors�There were 8 lords to start- many sold their shares to others or lost interest in Carolina.
�The man who saved the Colony was Anthony Ashley Cooper – he became the leader of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina.
�In 1669, 100 settlers arrived in the port of Charles Town(today’s Charleston).
�They moved up the Ashley River to Albemarle Point.

The colony’s first government was NOT very democratic:

groups would have equal voice in government; however, tension still existed between the Proprietors and colonists.

Writing Prompt:�Describe how the Proprietary Government of Charles Town became more democratic over time.
� Settlers who paid their own way to America received large land grants known as headrights, which became the southern plantations we know today.
� In the 1690’s & 1700’s, rice production became the primary income for SC - “Carolina Gold”
� Tidal rivers were perfect for growing rice. Unfortunately, rice was a very high labor crop to produce.

�After 7 years, they gained their freedom to settle for themselves.
� 75% of the population arrived as indentured servants.
� BUT there were not enough servants to work the plantations so…
