BACKGROUND

EXPERIENTIAL MEANING

RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCES

TYPE, SUBJECT, & OBJECT OF THE

RESEARCH

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

TECHNIQUE OF DATA ANALYSIS

RESULT OF THE DATA ANALYSIS

Jacobson (in Bassnett, 2002: 23),

“Messages may serve as adequate interpretations of code units or messages, there is ordinarily no full equivalence through translation. Translation is only an adequate interpretation of an alien code unit and equivalence is impossible”.

VARIATIONS

Pazz in Basnet & Trivedi (1999: 3)

“No text can be completely original, because

language itself, in its very essence, is already

translation…”

Bassnett (1999:ix)

“Translation is viewed as an act of invention

that produces a new original in another

language”

Meaning in the source text will be expressed by

a translator with different way into the target

text.

The difference of meaning expression

Meaning Variations in the translated texts

Tou (in Sinar, 2007: 97) states three types of

meaning; height, depth, and breadth.

Meaning breadth ranges from the narrowest to

the widest

The concept of diversification

Translation is a semiotic communication realizing meaning form from the ST into the TT.

TSC concept is as metasemiotic phenomena, translation act as an activity of transferring meaning

Meaning can be analyzed by metafunctions.

Interpersonal

Textual

Ideational => clause as representation through transitivity system

Experiential meaning represents human

experiences realized in transitivity system.

The functional elements of transitivity:

Participants

Processes; material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal &

existential.

Circumstances ; extent, location, manner, cause, role,

matter & angle.

Experiential meaning breadth variations view

the differences of realization in the transitivity

system between T1 and T2.

Meaning breadth refers to increasing or

decreasing the realization of functional

elements.

Folklores

Folklores are prose narratives which are

regarded as fiction.

They are told Not only for amusement but also

have important function such as moral values

suggested.

oral mode vs text mode.

to investigate the experiential meaning of the

folklores.

The Research Formulations

How are the experiential meaning breadth

variation in Dhanu Priyo Prabowo’s Pak Banjir

Bertaubat and Abdur Rosyid’s Mr. Banjir

Repentance?

What are the motivating factors of the

experiential meaning breadth variations which

occur in Dhanu Priyo Prabowo’s Pak Banjir

Bertaubat and Abdur Rosyid’s Mr. Banjir

Repentance?

Research Significances

• to provide the understanding of bilingual translation analysis in terms of experiential meaning breadth.

• To provide the understanding about theory of TSC by Tou applied in the translation field.

Theoretically

• the result of this research can be used as a reference and as teaching material in translation study.

• To give the understanding about the motivating factors influencing in translation.

Practically

Type, Subject & Object of the

Research

• This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to identify one of the phenomenon in translation, especially the experiential meaning breadth variations.

• This study applies technique of content analysis as research technique

Research Approach

• The bilingual texts are in bahasa Indonesia and English.

• The texts are folklore; T1 is Pak Banjir Bertaubat by Dhanu Priyo Prabowoand T2 is Mr.Banjir Repentance by Abdur Rosyid.

Subject

• The experiential meaning breadth realized in each clause of both the texts..

Object

Research Instrument & Technique Data

Analysis

Research Instrument

• The parameter table of experiential meaning breadth variations.

Technique of Data Analysis

• Relate and compare each clause of T1 and T2 realized in functional elements of transitivity system.

Result of the Data Analysis

Contextual Factors

Situational context is a useful term to cover

things going on world outside the text

SFL refers to three aspects/parameters of the

situational context as field, tenor, and mode

(Butt, et.al, 2001: 4),

Field

Martin (in Sinar, 2007: 85) defines field as a

set of activity sequences oriented to some

glbal institutional purpose.

The field of ST is in bahasa Indonesia telling

about Mr. Banjir’s life who lives poorly because

of his laziness.

The field of TT is English telling at the same

with field of ST.

Tenor

Poynton (in Sinar, 2007: 86) states the dimensions of tenor (power, contact, and affect.

ST: Power is unequal => participants are the author and the

readers => not reciprocal.

Contact is one-off contact => communication goes in one way.

Affect is low => the relationship are not effectively involved.

TT: Power is unequal => participants are the translator and the

readers => not reciprocal.

Contact is one-off => in one way

Affect is low

The lowest meaning variation indicates the

translator try to keep the form of the ST.

Using source text oriented method in

translating the ST.

Mode

Mode deals with the symbolic organization

concerning with what role language is playing,

Halliday and Hasan (in Sinar, 2007: 87).

Hasan (in Sinar, 2007: 87) specifies two

dimensions of mode (channel and medium)

Medium => written and monologic text

Channel => it is graphic coming from the

participants through their ears and telling by one

to others

conclusions

The experiential meaning variation is the lowest degree with 55.19 percent.

The experiential meaning breadth is SE=TE with 57.44 percent.

It indicates that the clause of T1 is mostly represented in T2.

Motivating factors consist of situational context; field (Mr. Banjir’s life) tenor (ST: author& readers, TT: translator & the readers) mode (texts are in written text.
