Businesses Need To Master The Cardinal Skills of Improvisation

We are living in dynamic and challenging times. Globalization; acceleration of technological change; rapid rise and fall of companies and industries; emergence of open business models and networks; and need for innovation & change have given rise to a business climate that demands quick, adaptive and decisive action. The “new normal” for businesses is a state of constant innovation and adaptation. Organizations cannot afford to be complacent or rely on last year’s solutions and technologies.

Today’s workforces must be agile. They must be able to anticipate and adapt to an ever-changing business environment. Managers and workers need skills and tools that help them embrace uncertainty, exploit opportunities for change, and respond appropriately. As such, Improvisation is an Imperative.

Business Improvisation Requires Embracing Change & Creativity

Common misconceptions about improvisation are that it is about comedy or that it is the last ditch effort of unprepared amateurs “making it up as they go along” or “desperately pulling at straws without structure”. Is that how one would describe the US Special Forces, Miles Davis’ jazz quartets, the Los Angeles Lakers, or Johnson & Johnson with its heroic handling of Tylenol tampering? Improvisation is about performing at the highest-level of skill and intelligence, in the moment, for the bene t of the group or organization. It is about leveraging expert knowledge and training, and creativity in adaptive ways. It is about putting the needs of team, product or process over those of the individual. Business improvisation is about applying these skills in business contexts. To develop these cardinal skills, an organization must pursue the learnings of improvisation around speci c business areas (e.g., organizational behavior, innovation, fostering talent, change management, con ict management), strengthen abilities to work with diverse teams, and apply and practice these skills in controlled and real settings.
