Information was sent home with students about ordering pictures. Please be certain to look over the information, make a choice of the package you would like to purchase, write a check made payable to Strawbridge Studios, and return the envelope to school. Every student will have his/her picture taken, even if he/ she is not purchasing any of the pictures, as these are the pictures that will be used in the Yearbook! Going to the Classroom in the AM This is a friendly reminder that parents are asked to fully utilize the Hugs & Kisses Zone in the mornings to say “good bye” to your child. Please remember that unless you have an appointment with your child’s teacher, you should not be walking to the classroom. This is for the safety of all of our children as teachers need to be giving their full attention to the students as they arrive in the morning. When parents “drop by” unexpected, it prevents the teacher from working with the students, supervising them, and interrupts the beginning of instruction. Thank you for your cooperation and support with this! PTA Back-to-School Night We hope you are making plans to be with us this Thursday evening, September 19, for our Back-to- School PTA Meeting. This is one of the most important meetings of the year as the PTA needs families to approve the budget for the year and it is a chance to visit with your child’s teacher to hear the expectations for the school year! This is an evening for parents only! The format this year will be different than years past. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. As you arrive at 6:30 p.m., you will go straight to your child’s classroom. (If you have more than one child, there are two sessions, so you can visit with one child’s teacher during the first session and another child’s teacher the second session. If you have mor e than two children at REES, hopefully your spouse or an adult friend can also attend so the two of you can split the visitation.) The PTA meeting will be televised in the classrooms at 6:30 p.m. As soon as the meeting is over, the teacher will begin talking with the parents. (We cannot give you an exact time for this, so the best thing is to be here at 6:30 p.m. so you will not miss anything!) The teacher will have 20 minutes to talk with parents. Then we will have 5 minutes to transition to visit with another teacher. The teachers will then give the exact same presentation a second time for 20 minutes. A reminder that this is not an evening for private conferences. Coming Up... Short Pump Kids Mile RunThis year’s Short Pump Kids Mile Run will be held Sunday, September 29 starting at 7:45 a.m. The cost is $15 per child and includes a medal and a t-shirt. Online registration is open through September 23. Registration can be completed online at: http://www.shortpumprace1.com/Registration.html

Please be sure to include Rivers Edge when you register so that we will have an accurate count of runners for the school participation award. The school with the highest number

of registered runners will receive a $600 check. Rivers Edge has won the last two years in a row and we would love to make it a third year! Go River Runners!

MAPS Assessments

This week our 4th grade students will be taking the MAPS (Measure of Academic Progress) diagnostic assessments in Math and Reading. Our 3rd grade students will take the assessments next week. The MAPS assessments are taken online and will give teachers lots of information about students’ strengths and weaknesses in each of those subject areas. The teachers will use the results to help guide instruction and plan for differentiated curriculum.

PTA Reflections

The PTA Reflections Program is an arts program sponsored by the National PTA. It encourages students to express their artistic talents by writing, dancing, composing and creating visual art. The theme this year is “Believe, Dream, Inspire” Any REES student in any grade may submit an entry and students may submit in more than one category. All rules and forms are available at www.reespta.org under the Programs tab. Entries are due by October 24! All participating students will receive recognition.

Magic Mailbox

The Magic Mailbox is a voluntary writing program. The mailbox for submissions is decorated and set up by the PTA Birthday Board. All types of writing are accepted at any time. Students currently have the option of choosing to write according to the Reflections theme. Students should fill out a submission form available on a clipboard at the mailbox and attach the form to their writing. A 5th gr. Editor’s Board meets every month to read all submissions and takes them through the editing process. Each month, one submission is recognized in the Student Spotlight and is posted near the mailbox for all to see and enjoy. Two literary newsletters are published.
