Barbara Carter started
rallying back in 1972
when she was in her
early 50’s and soon
became a formidable
face across the South
West, South East and
Wales where she rallied
a variety of cars such as
Sunbeams, Corolla’s and
Escorts with a host of
different navigators
such as Calvin Fenwick,
Ashley Drew, Bob Jones,
Bob Evans, Richard
Gough, Peter Barnard,
Len Beer and Ian
Orford.
Barbara was a valued
member and support of
Exmouth Motor Club and competed in both the Association of South West Motor Clubs and the Central and
Southern Road Rally Championships winning the ASWMC championship outright in 1998. One of her most
memorable results came in this year on the Ilfracombe Navigational Rally with Peter Barnard taking first
overall. Even after that event, as usual, Barbara made sure she milked the cows when she got home before
getting her head down for some rest!
Sadly Barbara passed away in December 2000 after retiring at the end of the ASWMC Championship with a
very respectable second overall driver position at the age of 78.
In 2001 Peter Barnard, Darren Dixon and Mark Butler decided to run a National B Navigational Rally for
Exmouth Motor Club with Alan Whitney as Clerk of the Course to be known as The Barbara Carter Memorial
Rally. Due to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth the first event to run wasn’t until 2002, as thus the event was
born! Some 24 entries started the first event with locals Darren Dixon & Peter Barnard taking honours in a 205
GTi. The event took a year out in 2009 when Alan stepped down but then original winning Navigator Peter
Barnard took over the reins of Clerk of the Course in 2010 and grew it to the event that’s known now.
2019 sees a new Clerk of the Course, 2015 & 2018 winning navigator Daniel Pidgeon who hopes to carry on the
Barbara Carter name for Exmouth Motor Club into the future.
