A singular subject takes a singular verb, e.g.

A plural subject takes a plural verb, e.g.

The boy is coming.

SV-Rule 1 Verb after introductory adverbs ‘Here’ and There’ agree with the subjects that follow them. For example,

-There is a book on the table.-There are three books on the table.-Here comes the bus.-There go the farmers.-There have been two accidents so far.

SV-Rule 2Two singular subjects connected by ‘and’ take a plural verbs. For example,

-Tom and Mary are friends.-She and I go to school together.-The manager and the owner of the company are leaving for Rome tomorrow.


SV-Rule 3The following words when used as pronouns are alwayssingular:

For example,

-Each of the boys plays very well.-Someone is coming.-Another plan is needed to solve the problem.-Nobody knows where he is.


SV-Rule 4Each of the following words when used as a pronoun is always plural:

SV-Rule 5 The following nouns are singular:

- Economics is a required subject in this field.- Mumps does not kill anybody.- Thai economics is worse than the past.


SV-Rule 6 The word ‘people’ is always plural. For example,

- The people were glad to hear that the King was coming.

SV-Rule 7 The title of a book or an article or a song is singular.For example,

- Gulliver’s Travel was written by Swift.- Your ‘Farmers and Their Rice Fields” is a well-written essay.


SV-Rule 8 The verb agrees with the near subject when two subjects are connected by the following conjunctions:

or either…orneither…nor not only…but also

For example,

- Neither you nor I am to go.- Either she or you are going to finish the work.- Not only the manager but also his daughters go to Paris every year.


SV-Rule 9 -A number of + (plural nouns) is plural.- The number of + (plural nouns) is singular.- None is singular; but, none of + (plural nouns) is plural.

For example,

- A number of students are playing football.- The number of students in this school is quite small.- None is here.- None of them are here.


SV-Rule 10 An infinitive or a gerund together with its modifiers issingular. For example,

- To read is a good habit.- To mend car is a work of a mechanic.- Drinking a lot of water when you are hot is said to be unwise.- Climbing mountains is a good sport.


Usually adverbs modify verbs. When an adverb modifies a verb, it can be placed sentence in the following manners:

- He walked slowly.

1. If the sentence has no object, the adverb follows the verb. For example,

2. If there is an object and the sentence is short, the adverb follows the object. For example,

- He learned the words easily.


3. If the object is long or already modified the adverb is placed immediately before the verb it modifies. For example,

- He carefully put the pen and the paper into the drawer.

An adverb can, however, be put before the verb it modifies although the sentence is short. This is often done when the speaker wants to emphasize that adverb. For example,-He really enjoyed the show.- He carefully studied the words.

Possessive adjectives are different from other kinds of adjectives in that predicative uses are not allowed. Their corresponding pronoun forms are used instead in the predicate; as,

Predicative Use Pronominal UseThis is her book. This book is hers. Mine is on the desk.These are their books. These books are theirs. Have you seen ours?


is used with an uncountable noun. For example,

- I bought too much furniture for my apartment.- How much happiness did you get from the party?

is used with a plural countable noun. For example,

- I bought too many tables for my apartment. - How many people are there in the party?


1. An imperative sentence is used ‘infinitive without to’ and sometimes the word ‘please’ could be put at the begin or the end of the sentence in order to be polite. For example,

-Please, take off your shoes before coming in.- Make yourselves at home, please.

2. In negative form, an imperative sentence is used ‘Don’t + infinitive without to. For example,

- Don’t play in the classroom. - Don’t leave your bicycle here, please.


There are three degrees of adjective comparison:

1. Positive degree is used to compare the similarity of an adjective: 1.1 ‘as + adjective + as’ is always used in an affirmative sentence. For example,

- This ball is as round as a marble. - John works as hard as his sister.

1.2 ‘not so + adjective + as’ is always used in a negative sentence. For example.

- Mary is not so beautiful as her mother. - He doesn’t run so fast as his brother.


2. Comparative degree is used to compare between two things or people:

2.1 Put ‘-er’ behind an adjective that has one syllable. For example,hard hardersmall smallerfast faster

2.2 Put ‘more’ in front of an adjective that has more than one syllables. For example,

3. Superlative degree is used to compare more than two things or people:

My favorite form of entertainment is the cinema. I love everything about it. The excitement starts when I look in the newspapers to see what films are showing this week. Then when I have chosen the film I want to see, I go down to the box office to buy a ticket. I usually get a centre aisle seat at the front so that I can get a good view of the screen When choosing a film I always like to see who directed it and who is starring in it. My favorite director is Steven Spielberg and my favorite actor is Anthony Hopkins. Nicole Kidman is probably one of the world’s best actresses but my favorite is Jodie Foster. I like most kinds of films: westerns, war films, comedies, thrillers, horror films anything really except science fiction films. Films that are set in the future really do not attract me. In addition, I am not very keen on films that have subtitles. It is not because I do not like foreign films. It is because I find it really difficult to read the subtitles, listen to the dialogue and watchthe action all at the same time!
