July 2020 – Jim’s Issue No 103
Coming out of lockdown, population going berserk edition.
Hopefully, unless all this beach going and rave participation causes Covid to spike we may be able to get back
to our monthly meetings in August. I have not been in touch with the Legion yet but I will keep you informed as
to any progress on this. There are not so many pages this month; perhaps because some of you are going back to
work, perhaps the novelty of being able to model any time you like has worn off or the weather is too hot.
Whatever the reason I haven’t received much to put in this newsletter so we only have 7 pages. One thing I have
learned via John is regarding a virtual Tankfest from Bovington. For anybody interested here is a link -

I think the majority of our membership is retired but I do know of one who is a key worker, there are probably
more and I am sure you would like me to thank them for continuing to keep up their good works during these
difficult times.

Petlyakov Pe2.Peshka(Pawn) 40 Bomber Regiment Black Sea Fleet 1944. Pilot Senior Lieutenant E Sedov.
1/72nd
kit by Zlinek a Czech company but moulded in Russia, nice fine surface detail and components but rather
a lot of flash and a most peculiar rather brittle plastic. There is a small fret of etch, but to be honest the plastic
parts were almost as good, the exception being the dive brakes. A large decal sheet with 12 versions to pick
from. The instruction sheet has a history of the type and exploded view parts placement, not very clear for some
of the parts. There is a lot of interior detail, which you cannot see when completed but the overall dimensions
appear to be correct, it fits the plans and looks like a Pe2. All in all it was an enjoyable build, took a bit of basic
modelling skill to get it to all fit together and make a reasonable representation of one of the Soviets’ best
aircraft from the Great Patriotic War. Peshka were in use with the Soviet Air force from the German invasion
‘Barbarossa’ on June 22nd
1941 right through to the Battle for Berlin April-May 1945. In the immediate post
war years they were relegated to training. Several other air forces in the soviet sphere of influence were also
equipped – Bulgaria, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia who finally scrapped them in 1954.

Another Kings Cup air race competitor, this time a Hawker Tomtit from 1930 entered by HRH the Prince of
Wales and flown by Sqn Ldr D S Don. Finishing in 18th
place out of 88 entries and a distance of 750
Miles at an average
Speed of 118.4 mph.
The model is semi
Scratch built, the wings
Are cut down Airfix
Demon, the tail modified
Matchbox Fury as are the
struts, undercarrage and
prop. The fuselage is plastic card and filler with a lot of scraping /filing to shape and the engine was made up
from the spares box. When all was complete the airframe was sprayed silver, foil applied to the nose to
represent the metal panels. Next the decal lettering was applied lastly the rigging was done with my usual paint
brush bristles.
This model has been lurking
around for some months as
I found it difficult to source
suitable lettering. At the
last Bovington show I managed
to procure some and therefore
was able to finish it at last and
add another Hawker subject
to my collection.

Next how well do you know the BCP and Wimborne area? Here are 18 photos of local sights, do you know
what and where they are. Apologies to our members who are not resident in this area but you have probably
seen them in passing through
