Steers to £1290 Heifers to £1050
With numbers further tightening, Friday saw an unexpected but welcome upturn in trade, although a much better quality entry
was on show. Store steers topped at a very decent £1290 for a pair of well turned out South Devon cross forward sorts (24m) from Graham Tancock of Broadclyst with next best from Graham also big money at £1245 for similar goods. British Blue bullocks
in demand once again with a pair (25m) from Charles & Ann Down, Abbotskerswell rising to £1270 apiece and a bunch of three off the same farm at £1240 a life and another smart single Blue (23m) drew £1165 for Derek Pyle of Clyst Honiton. Grand Charolais store steers (24m) from Raymond Latham down from South Molton look good money at £1180 as did a pigeon pair
of Charolais (26m) from Derek Pyle at £1120 each and later born sorts (19m) from Stephen Payne of Washfield at £1065. Limousin bullocks (18m) saw £1160 for James Warren up from Penzance with others closer to home at (25m) reaching £1095
for Martin Chatfield of Cheriton Bishop. Lester Solomon of Truro sold a trio of strong Hereford steers (23m) for £1090 a piece with Angus (18m) fetching £1025 for Bridget Brown of Moretonhampstead. Younger (15m) steers drew £845 for a Blonde de
Aquitaine from David C Skelley of Shaugh Prior and £735 for Stephen Payne again with a Charolais. British Blue heifers headed that section with a single (24m) at £1050 for Martin Chatfield with others of that breed (23m) at £910 for Colin Pople, Aylesbeare
whilst Charolais heifers (20m) from Clive Timms & family, Inwardleigh saw £960 and further Charolais females (27m) realised £945 for David & Stella Drew of Lapford. Limousin heifers (25m) reached £895 for Martin Chatfield closely followed by
Simmentals (22m) at £860 for Clive Timms & family with summer 2017 born British Blue’s at £770 for James Warren.
Only a sprinkling of stirks forward met a decent trade for anything well bred and reared, with the best being a pen of neat Angus steers (11m) from Graham Heard of Broadclyst topping at £670 apiece. Bridget Brown of Moretonhampstead attained £580
also for Angus steers whilst South Devon steers from Mick Branton of Dunsford achieved £565. Heifers topped at £540 for Gordon Bricknell of Christow with his others realising £470 also Graham Heard attained £465 for his Angus females.
A massive entry of 186 calves forward saw a difficult
trade as we head toward the festive season! Top of the day was £295 for a British Blue bull from Ashley
& Jess Bond of Honiton who sold others to £270, £268, £260 & £258. Limousin cross bulls to £295 for
Paul Hendy of Kingsbridge with others to £255 for Pincombe of Crediton. Charolais bulls to £255 & £245
for Andrew & Rose Retter of Honiton. Native calves topped at £250 for an Aberdeen Angus bull from Messrs Higgin of Totnes. Simmental bulls to £220 &
£195 for Martin & Liz Bennett of Broadhembury. Heifers topped at £240 for a Limousin cross from Paul
Hendy who sold others to £205. Charolais heifers to £225 for Kim Davey of Lewdown. British Blue heifers to £190 (x2) for Ashley & Jess Bond and Martin & Liz Bennett. Friesians to £80 for Messrs Higgin of Totnes.
Trade nationally has been very flat this week with some talk of vendors claiming that abattoirs have refused some consignments because there are too many in the system and trade is depressed.
Overall top call of the day was £100 given for the best in from John Hull of Wellington with the vast majority between £80-£95.
A good entry sold to an OK trade very similar to last week with the best at £102 (x8) for heavies from Chris Down of Budleigh
Salterton. Richard Gibbins & family saw their regular line-up of quality medium weights hitting £95 with a run of twenty standard weights from John Hull topping at £82. Mr Hull’s stores topped at £50 for a pen of eleven, which were eclipsed by six young
saddlebacks in from Messrs Lyes of Liskeard which reached £52. Best of the very young stores came in from Richard Dunning of Whiddon Down hitting £31.
“My personal thanks go to vendors and purchasers and I wish you all a Merry Christmas & Happy & Prosperous New Year!”

An excellent entry for our Christmas Stocking Filler sale at Exeter which saw a packed ringside and a flying trade from start to
finish! The fresh milk was in very strong demand and topped at £2050 for the overall show champion a super Pedigree heifer from Gordon Davis of Tiverton which sold the judge James Parris of Yarcombe. First time vendors Megan, Ross & Jack Broom
of Colyton sold six super heifers to a top of £2000 with others to £1950, £1820 & £1700 to average £1830 of the best five! Dave Spry of Yelverton sold a nice consignment with a smart British Friesian heifer at £1980 and a Brown Swiss cross heifer at
£1650. Katie Hogg & Mike Walters sold a sweet heifer £1780 and Messrs JJ Palfrey & Co of Dartmouth sold their best heifer at £1700. Cows topped at £2020 for the first prize cow and Reserve Overall Champion “Aquarius Shadow Verna 6” a second
calver by B-Crest Shadow from Katie Hogg & Mike Walters. Other cows sold to £1950 for a Norwegian Red cross 3rd calver from Gordon Davis and £1900 for a Brown Swiss x fourth calver from Dave Spry who also sold a Norwegian Red cross 4th calver at £1400. Two Holstein in-calf heifers due in January sold at £1380 & £1320 for Will & Jo Jones of Crediton. A consignment
of organic in-calf heifers from Mark Evans East Church herd topped at £1080 with others to £1050 & £1000. Kat Watkins made the long journey from Pembrokeshire to Exeter with one fresh Pedigree Jersey “Puregold Topeka Jellyfish” by Heartland
Merchant Topeka, the long journey was certainly worth it with the heifer being an exceptional trade selling at £2050. The dispersal of the Bearstead herd of Pedigree Jerseys on behalf of Farley Farms of Berkshire were also rewarded with an exceptional
trade and ponce again proved Exeter is the leading centre to sell Jerseys in the country! Top of the dispersal was 2300gns for “Bearstead Broiler Crumble” a second calver by Danish DJ Broiler which calved back in May and only just served. A third calver
“Bearstead Broiler Rascal” which calved in August sold at 2100gns with an outstanding second calver by Clooney Conquerer selling well at 2000gns. A May calved heifer “Bearstead Beaumont Tiffany” by Ribblesdale Beaumont sold well at 1650gns and a
fourth calver by SHF Centurion Sultan sold well at 1600gns which was matched by another heifer by Clooney Conquerer. Dry cows to 1650gns for “Bearstead Broiler Teddy” by Broiler due in January with another third calver at 1350gns. In-calf heifers
sold to 1200gns for a daughter of All Lynns Vernon Macarthur due in January. Bulling heifers by the same sire sold to 600gns (x3) with others to 550gns twice.

Pedigree In-Lambers to 750gns Couples to £235 Stores to £86.50 Commercial In-Lambers to £141
Numbers growing on a weekly basis and so is demand with seven buyers present today with many looking for numbers. Top was £22 for two from Graham Hill of Wiggaton followed by both Alan Bickley of Puddington and Tom Yandle of Mamhead who
both sold three at £20. Others £8 to £18 to average all but £16.
The commercial in-lamb ewe sale met with more interest and trade than many had anticipated with the Johnson family of Bridport selling their Dorset Mule shearlings all scanned with twins at £141 (x2), £140 (x4) and £136 (x3). Ross & Emma Sizmur
of Okehampton sold Mule Shearlings that had been running with the ram at £106 & £100, Chris & Katie Steer sold their mixed breed older ewes that were scanned for February to £104, £100, £98 (x2) & £97 and Robert Partridge of Teignmouth parted
with his beat at £98. Empty ewe lambs sold to £87 (x2) for Dorset’s from Graham Reed of Bickleigh, £84 for pure Suffolk’s from John Vooght of Dunsford and £82 for Suffolk cross mules from Dallyns Dairy of Muddiford.
Store lambs rose an impressive £4 per head on the week in front of a full complement of buyers when the 2050 averaged £66.36 and topped at £86.50 for a smart single lamb from Martin Pearse of North Huish followed by Phillip Rowell of Crockernwell at
£85 & £83.50. More forward lambs from brothers John & Mark Moore of Rackenford sold to £84.50, £83.50, £82.50 and £80 and similarly strong sorts from Neil & Kate Lethbridge of East Allington reached £84.50, £81.50, £81 & £80. Too many vendors to mention parting with decent lambs in the late £70’s, medium keep lambs were often breaking the £70 barrier too with well-
bred long keep lambs looking the dearest on the day and occasionally touching the £70 mark. Indifferent long keep lambs from £50 to £62 whilst a few very smalls, hill bred lambs or those sold with fault trading less than that.
Lacking strength and selling to £60 for a Hampshire x ewe from G Routley of Postbridge who also had fleshy Scotch ewes that looked well sold at £35 and VR Barrett travelled up from Truro to claim £50 for their best.
Couples met with a much larger crowd of buyers who drove the trade to the dearest we’ve seen so far this season peaking at £235 for a FM Dorset ewe with month old twins from Luke Bulley of Newton Abbot. Alan Bickley parted with his usual quality
doubles at £228, £225, £208, £206, £204 & £202, looking £20-£30 per couple dearer on the week and DL Rigby of Wiggaton sold his best group of doubles at £198. Singles peaked at £175 for Adrian & David Cole of Bradninch with ten Dorset FM’s
followed by Luke Bulley with similar at £165 and Andrew Hext of Staverton sold his best housed singles to £146 & £141. Overall average was £181.66 per outfit or £69.20 per life.
The third annual Christmas Cracker sale drew a decent catalogue of 51 females which in turn enticed a good crowd of potential buyers to spend on the right articles. The Pedigree in-lamb Texels dominated the top prices with Ben Roberts of Bradninch selling his best shearlings at 750gns & 620gns as well as another two at 580gns. More Texel shearlings at 600gns for both FH
Chave & Son of Wellington and EW Quick & Son of Crediton who had others to 520gns. Also at 600gns were a Blue Texel shearling from Gwen Renfree of Liskeard as well as a Beltex shearling ewe from Lorna Gregory of Launceston. 92% found new
homes with other prices of note being Berrichons from Malcom Yeo of Barnstaple exchanging hands at 250 & 240gns (x2) along with sizable Blue Texel x Zwartbles ewe lambs from Messrs Holman & Mugridge which realised 160gns (x2) & 140gns (x2).

December is upon us and before we know it another year has literally flown by. It doesn’t seem that long ago when we were busy harvesting and silaging in shorts and a T-shirt with wall to wall sunshine and soaring temperatures, they always say ‘time fly’s when you’re having fun’. I reiterate what was mentioned in last months ‘Rural Reflection’ and up until now we have benefited from a marvellous autumn and winter and in many ways it has been a saviour for a large amount of livestock farmers throughout the south-west, not only being able to keep livestock out for so long but also the ability to make a much needed extra crop of silage. I know at home we haven’t kept cattle out until the end of November for a very very long time. Onto recent news, and it would appear the RPA (Rural Payments Agency) have recently undertaken a large amount of Remote Sensing Inspections on claimants situated in the South Hams. Remote Sensing is a satellite tool the RPA use to remap land parcels making sure you as claimants are not under or over claiming on field parcels (often the latter). The Remote Sensing Inspections often create unwanted paper work and hassle and in my opinion are a complete waste of time. It isn’t uncommon for the satellite imagery to incorrectly remap field boundaries. Anyway, that all said we have to deal with the findings. To date I have sent emails to the RPA on behalf of a number of clients expressing concern on a number of the Remote Inspection findings, in particular results relating to hedgerow measurements. Currently I have not received any details or correspondence back from the RPA. Going forward and as ever, if you have any concerns or just require quick reassurance on the phone surrounding any BPS matters please get in touch. Continuing on matters revolving around the RPA it will soon be that time of year when the farming fraternity take great interest on what post turns up on the kitchen table. Hopefully for many within the next few weeks BPS payments will be arriving into your bank accounts. In relation to this, and what seems to be a growing trend, farmers are being reminded to be wary of fraudsters. During December police around the UK are expecting an influx of calls and emails to the farming community attempting to trick them out of their money. Please do be careful when answering calls or opening emails ensuring you do not fall victim to these types of shocking scams. December is notoriously a quiet time of year, but in particular for marketing property. That said December often gives great opportunity to put the preparations together if you are minded to sell in the forthcoming spring. I know our colleagues in West Devon are currently in the process of putting together marketing material for a number of properties which will be live in the New Year. If you would like any confidential discussions with any of our Land and Farms Team on the possibility of marketing your property then please get in touch. Preparation is key when bringing a property onto the market.
Fodder is an ongoing concern for many and from the last two sales our Exeter team has conducted, fodder prices
have been ‘off the clock’ with silage fetching up to £40 per bale being both conventional and organic. In all
honestly price does depend on the quality, location of the fodder available and who your neighbour is, but with
prices up around the £40 mark that cannot be sustainable for anyone. Next week sees the first of our fodder sales
here at Exeter Livestock Centre with a reasonable entry taking place.
Early lambing flocks have been reporting a reasonable time of late with circumstances most likely changing now
after the last few days of torrential wind and rain. A bit of good news for the sheep industry, that said, good news
which is a long time coming. Due to new government policy, as of 1st January—30th June 2019 all old season
lambs/hoggets presented at market will not be mouthed and therefore deemed as under 12 months. Therefore
Rural Reflection December 2018
lambs/hoggets presented after 30th June will be deemed as over 12 months and sold as scalers.
Coming to the end of 2018 we are able to reflect on what has been a wonderfully busy year for the Kivells team
both in the Livestock department and Professional departments. The professional team has expanded, creating
and meeting new clients throughout Devon, Cornwall and Somerset involving a wide range of work from complet-
ing BPS applications to selling the family farm. We thank you for your continued custom and we look forward to
serving the South West rural community throughout 2019.
Until Next Year …………
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
