Prime Cattle to 214 ppk and £1397 Barren Cows to 138 ppk and £1087
Nothing wrong with the cattle trade on Monday with strong demand from the several keen buyers in attendance.
Prime cattle saw a top 214ppk for a shapely 614kg Blonde heifer from Adrian Bowden, Drewsteignton which
realised £1310 followed by a heavier 648kg Blonde heifer from Keith and Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey which
levelled out at 203ppk and £1312. Other good meat heifers saw Limousin’s (18m) to 204ppk and £1133 for
Jason and Cathy Crang of Cadeleigh whilst a nice run of Charolais from Rosie Fishleigh, Sourton Cross also
reached 204ppk and £1139 and Keith and Hilary Harvey’s 640kg British Blue drew 199ppk and £1270. Best
heavyweight steers ran to £1395 (786kg x 178ppk) for Grenville Hockridge of Sourton with a Devon, followed
by Keith and Hilary Harvey once more with a 792kg British Blue which realised £1397. Over thirty month prime
saw 200ppk or £1169 for a 580kg Devon steer from J & L Heywood of Barnstaple. The barren cow section saw
a top of 138ppk given for a young 570kg Limousin from Findlay and Palmer of Moretonhampstead while the
same sellers saw further Limousin cows to 129ppk and £801. Louise Elsworthy, Crockernwell saw her strong
846kg Blonde barrener also reach 129ppk and gross at a decent £1087 followed by South Devon’s at £851
(684kg x 125ppk) for Phil Haydon of Cheriton Bishop and £817 (696kg x 118ppk) for Richard and Pete Mann of
Widecombe in the Moor. Further native breed cows saw Devon’s sell to 117ppk for Richard Hill of Dunsford
and £655 for Geoff and Liz Hosegood of East Worthlington. The aforementioned cows were the best prices
attained although Mondays sale did included several older and plain sorts all in the 70 to 95ppk bracket.

Prime Lambs to £115 & 250 ppk Cull Ewes to £114.50 & Rams to £110
More lambs forward at 849 sold to a slightly easier trade following yet another weekend of uncertainty for the
industry, country and Europe. A few showy lambs forward saw
the top price per head go to Phil & Angela Dallyn of Ipplepen
with their super 56kg Blue Texel selling at £115 whilst their
lighter pen-mates scaled 44kgs and achieved £104. Similarly a
trio of superb Beltex’s from Lousie Elworthy of Crockernwell,
weighed 40kgs and achieved £100, bagging themselves the top
price per kilo of 250ppk whilst their heavier pen mate weighed
44kgs and made £106. Further pens of overweights from Geoff
Tripp of East Prawle sold at £107.50, both the Case family of
Burstock and the Abel Bros of Tavistock saw their best return
£107 and R & R Leonard of North Tawton claimed £105. 48kg
lambs to £100 again for the Case family and £98.80 & £98 for
Merv Hutchings of Launceston as 47kgs sold to £97 for Robin
Banks of Colyton and £96.20 for both Phil Rogers of Noss Mayo
and Steve Harris of Littlehempston. Commercial 44kgs to
£99.50 for Dave Lockyer of Burlescombe and £96.50 for Becky
Moody of Exeter as 45kgs peaked at £96.20 for Abel Bros and
43kgs maxed out £93.50 again for Merv Hutchings. Lighter lambs a more varied trade depending on breed and
quality but usually around the 200ppk mark. SQQ was 7 pence less at 207ppk.
Another short entry of ewes and another improved trade. Best ewes to £114.50 for a single Suffolk cross from
Mary Curtis of Cadeleigh, £112 for a neat Beltex from John Anthony of Tedburn St Mary, more Suffolk crosses
at £108.50 & £105 for good pens from the Crooke family of Sandford and £104 for both D Saunders of Belstone
and Collier Bros of Uplyme. Single Charollais type ewes sold to £107 for Paul Bowden of Drewsteignton and
£104 for Stuart Ludwell of Puxey whilst another 7 pens sold in excess of £100. Mules usually in the £80’s for
meated sorts showing strength whilst some very lean ewes of all breeds look well sold and are certainly
commanding a premium over fat. No great number of hill ewes but Whitefaced Dartmoors to £55, Cheviots to
£77 and Jacobs to £71. Rams to £110 for a Charollais again from Collier Bros and £105, £100 & £95 for assorted
breeds from Martin Pearse of North Huish. Overall average very similar at £83.

smart 41kg lambs rose to 180 & 178ppk or £73.80 & £72.80 respectively. A great line up of well finished light lambs
from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg
Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at
£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is
just a penny better at 170ppk.
367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS
A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes
were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey
Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for
similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as
mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of
Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to
£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very
few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty
Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull
sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of
trade.

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.

RURAL REFLECTION DECEMBER 2020 Well suddenly we see ourselves in December and hopefully many of you will now have received your BPS payment!
Some farmers have also received their Countryside Stewardship payment alongside their Basic Payment which is an
added bonus. Looking back over the year, it has definitely been a different one with aspects nobody could have
planned for but over all of the Kivells office and departments, we continue to keep busy and we thank all of our
clients for their continued support whilst we work in a COVID secure way.
Having recently returned from maternity leave, it is good to be back in the office and get up to date with all of the on
goings and see many clients at market. Within the office we are seeing the Countryside Stewardship Applications
applied for back in the summer being approved, mainly the smaller ones at present but compared to previous years
we are seeing them come through a lot earlier. The Small Countryside Productivity Grants that were applied for back
at the beginning of November have also started to trickle in, which is looking promising and those businesses that
have been approved for a grant, have until 31st March 2021 to receive and pay for their items before making a claim.
The Agricultural Bill became Law on 11th November, which sets the scene for the 7 year agricultural transition period
between 2021 – 2027. This sees the phasing out of the Basic Payment Scheme, delinking of Direct Payments (BPS) and
the introduction of the New Environmental Management Scheme. DEFRA have outlined the key changes with the
main aspects in 2021 being;
1) The removal of greening rules – crop diversification, Ecological Focus Areas (EFA’s) and the permanent
grassland rules will no longer be relevant but this will not affect the overall payment received as the greening
money will instead be added to the BPS entitlement value.
2) The first reductions to BPS – everyone will receive a reduction of 5% on their first £30,000 of payments with
bigger reductions on the higher payment bands.
3) Start of a 3 year national pilot for the Environmental Land Management Scheme.
4) Improvements to existing schemes - the Countryside Stewardship Scheme will continue to be available with the
last new applications being accepted in 2023. Anyone that has a Countryside Stewardship Agreement that starts
after January 2021, who gets offered a new Environmental Land Management Scheme, will be able to withdraw
and transfer to the new scheme with no penalty. Therefore anyone considering applying for a new Countryside
Stewardship agreement in 2021, it is worth looking to see what options are out there.
On the property side, we have seen a tremendous couple of months here at Exeter with a range of property types
seeing prices often achieving in excess of their guide prices. We have just completed on Higher Swannaton Farm
which included an extensive farmhouse, two well designed barn conversions, an extensive range of modern and
traditional agricultural outbuildings along with 57 acres of pasture land in a stunning location which saw a huge
amount of interest. We have also completed on the Land at Christow being a smaller acreage on the edge of
Dartmoor. We where we were inundated with interest and it sold well in excess of the guide prices. This shows the
huge demand for small pieces of land where people can own ‘a little piece of Devon’, something we have seen
increasingly popular since the first lockdown.
Following a very successful Autumn trading in the farm agency department, we have a number of blocks of land and
farms in the pipeline so please watch this space, and give the office a call to get registered so you are kept up to date
with any properties coming on the market. Likewise if you are interested in discussing the possibility of selling in the
spring, please do not hesitate to contact your local Kivells office a call and we would be more than happy to carry out
a market appraisal and discuss how we can help with marketing.
Weather wise, compared to the autumn of 2019; 2020 has been very kind to us with opportunities to get the winter
crops in and livestock staying out slightly later than they would have in 2019. Let’s hope this weather continues and
we do not have a long winter ahead.
As always, please give your local property and professional office a call if we can help with any matter and ‘we wish
you all a jolly Christmas but a jolly safe Christmas!’
