Exercise 03: Analyzing Beam Model
Overview Truss Model
In this example rod and beam elements are used for modeling of a truss structure.
NFX analysis process includes:
- opening file with the geometry of
the truss
- material and property definitions
- meshing using beams and rods
- constraints and load applications
- NEi Nastran analysis of the model
- post-processing of the results

Procedure
1. File, Open… Truss.fnb for
model geometry
2.Click Right Mouse button in
Work Window and select [Hide
Datum & Grid].
3.Click [Isometric 2] button on
View toolbar.

Add Material to Model
1. In Model –Works Tree window
right click on Material and select
Add, Isotropic… command.
2. Go to material data base clicking
on [DB <] and select Alloy Steel.
3. Press [Close] button.
4. Click [OK] button to set the
material parameters.

Beam Properties
1. In the Model –Works Tree
window right click on Property and
select Add, 1D… command.
2. Press Beam tab.
3. Activate and press Section
(PBEAML) button.
4. Choose L from section list and
enter the following section
parameters: DIM1 = DIM2 = 4
DIM3 = DIM4 = 1
Press [OK] button to close Section

set the Name to L Angle Property,
and review calculated values.

Create Beam Mesh
1. From Menu Bar select Mesh, 1D,
Auto Mesh Edge…
2. Select 16 Edges. (see figure)
3. Set Number of Divisions to 1.
4. Click [Orientation] button. Set
the Reference Vector (Element Y-
Axis) to: 0, 1, 0 .
5. Set the Name to: Beam Mesh.
6. Press [OK] button.

Display Cross Section
1. In the Model –Works Tree
window expand Property.
2. Right click on L Angle Property
and select Show Section…
As you see, some of the beam are
oriented differently. The next few
steps show you how to reverse the
normals when they are facing in the
wrong direction.

1. From Menu Bar select Mesh,
Element, General Parameters…
2. Select Reverse Normal
option.
3. Set the Selection Filter to 1D
Element (O).
4. Pick 2 wrong oriented
elements.

2. Enter Nodal Constraints as the
Name of BC Set.
