WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK

Who We Are

IAVA is the foremost veteran’s advocacy and support

organization on the planet. Its mission is to connect,

unite, and empower a new generation of veterans.

Founded by an Iraq veteran in 2004, IAVA is the non-partisan leader in advocacy, public awareness, and 1-on-1 case-management support. In our fifteen-year history, IAVA has connected more than 1.2 million veterans with essential resources and provided thousands of veterans with life-saving and life-changing personalized support. Through education, advocacy, and community building, IAVA strives to shape a country which honors and supports veterans of all generations.

Today our nation needs leaders, and IAVA veterans are well positioned to bring our nation together. To this end, our mission is to connect, unite, and empower all post-9/11 veterans. We are an organization driven by principles of mission, integrity, and respect, and we leverage the heroic sacrifices of our veterans to improve their lives, the communities they serve, and to inspire a next generation of leaders.

The stakes are high for the IAVA community and our work has never been more important. Troops continue to sacrifice around the globe. Global threats are increasing. And back at home, our nation’s veterans are being used as political props, while many of the most pressing issues facing veterans are being ignored.

Since its founding, IAVA has led the fight to ensure veterans’ voices are not ignored -- often when others wouldn’t. Many groups support veterans, but IAVA reshapes the landscape and changes history. We fight the fights the fights our members need, whether it is demanding equality for women veterans, or bringing mental health to the forefront of visibility. IAVA is the vanguard of the veteran’s movement, driving the national conversation around veterans, our military, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the costs and consequences of war. We passed and defended policies in Washington that impacted all post-9/11 veterans as well as our brothers and sisters in the broader national community of 22 million veterans. We provided high-touch, in-depth, one-on-one transition assistance to over 900 veterans navigating their returns home, ensuring they got the support that they needed. And we continue to do this and much more to ensure the best future for our members.

WHY WE DO IT

Connecting and Empowering HeroesIAVA firmly believes that veterans are not a charity, they’re an investment. We believe veterans are powerful sources of hope, unity, and impact. They are the future. IAVA promotes these beliefs as a non-profit impact engine that connects, unites, and empowers over 400,000 veterans and allies nationwide.

Every day, we fight for veterans. We organize locally, and drive historic impacts nationally. We have connected more than 1.2 million veterans with resources and community, and provided thousands of veterans of all generations with life-saving and life-changing personalized support.

We’re a tough watchdog as well, holding political and media leaders accountable for failures to support our community. This work is powered by IAVA’s incredible national membership and our innovative Policy Division, which uses real data to drive the development of scalable solutions to benefit veterans and their families. Through careful analysis of IAVA’s powerful annual member survey and continuous surveillance of data about service members, veterans and their families, IAVA’s Research Department informs the development of IAVA advocacy campaigns and programs and promotes an accurate representation of veterans in public discussion of the most important issues of our time.

5. Recognizing and improving services for women veterans

6. Establishing support for veterans who want to utilize medical cannabis

And we provide key services including:• community outreach, integration, and engagement;

• connections to education and job training;

Community Outreach and Integration

IAVA knows coming home isn’t easy. Our Rapid Response Referral Program (RRRP) is IAVA’s high-tech, high-touch case management and referral services program. If you’re a veteran or a veteran family member facing transition-related challenges or have questions, RRRP can help.

Whether you’re thinking about school, need help navigating the VA, or are confronting significant challenges like unemployment, homelessness, legal, financial or mental health struggles, IAVA can connect you to the quality resources you need to get back on your feet and meet your goals.

Types of referrals provided include:• Disability Claims• Education Benefits• Mental Health• Financial Assistance• Legal Services• Employment Services• Housing Services• Public Benefits

IAVA also makes home feel more like home. Less than 1% of the country served in the post 9/11 era – a stark contrast to the 12% that served during WWII. Building community, both online and on-the-ground, is a critical factor in fulfilling IAVA’s mission, which means bridging geographical divides to create a united, supported and proud movement of new veterans.

OUR KEY SERVICES

Career, Educational, and Leadership Opportunities

No veteran should come home from deployment to an unemployment check. To fight shockingly high joblessness rates, IAVA’s Combat to Career initiative helped over 270,000 veterans in their transition to civilian careers in 2011.

IAVA also supports veterans’ education. With nearly a million new veterans headed back to school under the New GI Bill, IAVA has provided over 500,000 with the tools and support needed to make informed decisions about their education.

IAVA also advances opportunities for veteran’s leadership more broadly. Over the years, IAVA signature leadership development program, Storm the Hill, has grown from a handful of veterans into an annual event placing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in more than 100 meetings with our nation’s leaders. “Stormers” have successfully fought for better body armor, secured advanced funding for VA health care, and continuously strengthened the New GI Bill. This year alone Storm the Hill garnered nearly 500 million media hits in the effort to pass life-saving suicide prevention legislation that increases veterans’ access to care and the VA’s ability to handle returning veterans. When IAVA Storms the Hill, politicians listen.

Physical and Mental Health Services

IAVA makes it a priority to ensure that both physical and mental health needs are being effectively addressed in our community and has provided support to thousands of returning veterans nationwide.

IAVA has been a national leader in connecting veterans of all eras with best in class mental health resources. Our Rapid Response Referral Program (RRRP) is a high-tech, high-touch case management and referral services program. We call it RRRP because it rips through the bureaucracy – it’s help without the hassle. Since its launch as a pilot program in New York City in December 2012, RRRP has grown into a respected national program by making huge impacts in the lives of veterans and their families. Our qualified Veteran Transition Managers (VTMs) are clinically trained and educated Masters-level social service professionals. VTMs act as transition navigators and advocates, assisting veterans to identify and access top benefits and services, both governmental and nongovernmental. Examples of such services include the Semper Fi Fund, Operation Mend, Operation PAVE, the Veterans Crisis Line, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, VA Vet Centers, and more. Importantly, we take clients with all discharge statuses, including those whose status might otherwise make receiving benefits difficult.

Policy-Relevant Research

IAVA is focused on results. Since 2007, in an increasingly gridlocked political environment, IAVA has fought for numerous pieces of groundbreaking legislation. Recent examples include: The Deborah Samson Act (2018), The Burn Pits Accountability Act (2018), The VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act (2018), and The Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act (2017), among many others.

IAVA’s Research Department uses real data to drive the development of scalable solutions to benefit veterans and their families. Through careful analysis of IAVA’s annual member survey and continuous surveillance of data about service members, veterans and their families, IAVA’s Research Department informs the development of IAVA advocacy campaigns and programs.

We partner with all those who share our commitment to this generation of veterans – whether they’re Democrat, Republican, or Independent. We’ve led in the passage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for America’s Veterans (SAV) Act, the VOW to Hire Heroes Act and numerous other pieces of game-changing policy and legislation. We’ve worked closely with the White House, Members of Congress, the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), corporations, and other nonprofits to create powerful networks for impact.

Advocacy and Media

IAVA is the leading voice for veterans in Washington and has made its presence known through advocacy and committed and innovative media engagement. Led by veterans, IAVA’s non-partisan advocacy work ensures that post 9/11 era veterans and their families are supported, protected, and never forgotten.

IAVA is first to the media because our programs and membership are authentic. IAVA and our membership is relevant to not just the veteran community but also to the civilian population. Nowhere does IAVA move the needle further for veterans nationwide than in its ability to engage the public and lead the national discussion we have done this in recent initiatives, as well as across existing and emerging forms of media.

Recent examples of IAVA’s incredible impact can be seen in the Annual Memorial Day Go Silent Campaign, the attention garnered through the Annual Heroes Gala, and our consistent support from the country’s civilian leaders. IAVA leadership, the most diverse group of Veteran Service Organization (VSO) leaders in the country, were the face of the veteran movement in 2018. Eight different IAVA veteran employees joined television and radio broadcasts as experts on our policy agenda. IAVA media presence reached over 80 million people, a value of $1M in free publicity. Outlets included NPR, CBS, PBS, NBC, The New York Times, MSNBC, Fox News, The Washington Post and much more. IAVA hosted over 10 press conferences and ensured that our message was heard and supported by millions of Americans.

IAVA has continuously leveraged relationships with the film and entertainment communities, both partnering with media and producing films that engage the veteran community and help bridge the military-civilian divide. These Academy Award-nominated and critically acclaimed films have ranged from independent documentaries to commercial blockbusters such as Green Zone and American Sniper.

IAVA has always recognized that film and entertainment projects have a unique power to reach and inspire millions. Films connected to Iraq and Afghanistan, for better or worse, can tell veterans’ stories to the world, and IAVA has worked to have a place in that conversation. When the average American is asked about Vietnam, the first reference they have is films like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Deerhunter, Born on the Fourth of July, Forest Gump and Hearts and Minds. Decades from now, IAVA supported films will do the same.

IAVA is also known for being digitally innovative, representing the new digital generation of veterans. We engaged our members online through cutting edge Facebook Live events and digital activations, which allowed veterans and supporters to connect with each other and the IAVA community from their homes. Many disabled veterans shared that technology was life-changing and can uniquely be leveraged by IAVA, setting us apart from many others in our veteran community.

Over the years, we’ve built a digital ecosystem to power our members and support veterans in their transition to civilian life. IAVA’s social media strategy has been a core part of our work, and we are now reaching millions around the world. IAVA punches above our weight class every day because of our outstanding people, generous, high-impact pro bono partners, and innovative digital strategy and infrastructure. The IAVA team has leveraged our powerful CRM database, Salesforce (pro bono), to build critical data about how our members engage online and in person, enabling us to create a seamless member experience.

Most importantly, IAVA provides historical, technical, cultural, social, financial, technological and programmatic support to care for veterans and supporters long after a TV, move, or digital thread expires.
