Executive Head’s Assembly

In Monday’s assembly, we reflected on different faiths and beliefs and how each religion has their own special

celebrations. I know some of you will have enjoyed family events last weekend to mark Nowruz and we learnt

how this is held at the spring equinox, the day when the sun’s light strikes the Equator directly and illuminates

every continent equally in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. In Farsi, the Persian language, Nowruz

means ‘new year’ and this event has been observed around the world for more than 3000 years.

We considered events in the Hindu calendar where the colourful festival of Holi is approaching and stories of

Vishnu and of Krishna are shared.

In the Christian calendar, we look forward to Easter and we were delighted to welcome Reverend Helen

Hancock from St Matthew’s Church, just round the corner from our school, who told the boys the Easter story.

Tuesday marked a year since the first lockdown and we paused to consider all that has happened in that time.

There has been sadness and challenge but there has also been resilience, compassion and many

demonstrations of love and support. The boys were invited to share their thoughts and their observations

ranged from the increased family meals and board games played with siblings to the rapid developments in

medicine and science in response to the pandemic.

Today, on the final day of term, we celebrated many of the successes and achievements of the boys over the

spring term. I am delighted to share the award winners throughout this Newsletter.

Poetry Recital Competition by Mrs Cross, Head of English

On a beautiful spring afternoon on Tuesday 23rd March, boys from Year 3 to Year 8 recited a fantastic variety

of poems from Shel Siverstein to Lewis Carroll to Ted Hughes. This year, the boys from Years 6, 7 and 8 were

also welcome to recite song lyrics as poetry from everyday life that speaks to its audience. It was a joy to see

the likes of Shakira performed next to Maya Angelou adding to a really eclectic and exciting competition. Our

adjudicators were Mr Greenwood as Head of Classics, and Mrs Le Grice, who we welcomed as representative

from our governors. They did a brilliant job choosing our winners in what was a very a difficult decision. As

they made their decisions, we were treated to music by Ethan Luo, Joe Hackshall and George Day.

A massive well done to all of finalists especially our

junior winner, Elijah Spencer, our middle winner,

Gethin Davies, and our senior winner, Zachary

Elliott.

The English teachers have been simply blown away by

the quality of the performances from all year groups

this year and we thoroughly enjoyed the competition

at every stage. Well done to each and every boy that

took part.

Sports Report by Mr Davison, Director of Sport

House Rugby

The House Rugby event passed so successfully this week, in many ways the touch-tackle format worked really

well, creating a more inclusive feel to the competition. Regular readers will know the central position that

values, and the development thereof, sits within our delivery and programme. In House Rugby this comes to

the fore with the House Values competition, celebrated with the awarding of the Edwards Values Cup. Each

team in every match is awarded a values score based on the core rugby values of teamwork, respect,

enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. Wonderful to formally recognise these vital traits within our boys.

House Run

At the time of writing the brave young souls of SHS are committing lap after lap of the all-weather surface in

the House (sponsored) Run. This is one of our favourite events – fully inclusive, pure effort, House competition

and in support of worthy causes. This year sees the SHS community supporting both the NHS and Mind

Kingston (THANK YOU!). Long distance running takes courage – buckets of that in evidence today!

The Cock House Cup will be awarded at the beginning of the summer term so the results of today’s Sponsored

Run can be included in the overall result.

Target Shooting

Target shooting is supported at SHS in our ever (and increasingly) popular after-school club run by the expert

Target Shooting School. Those boys lucky and dedicated enough to participate regularly compete in

competition - primarily the British Sporter League. Congratulations to the following boys who won medals in
