PARTNERS IN HEALING THE WHOLE PERSON Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. This program fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life or their “new normal.” The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to

The goal of the program is to help participants build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Participants also receive the assistance needed to develop their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff and members.

YOUTH & ADULT SPORTS

New Martial Arts Classes for Kids and Adults Beginning This Fall

Judo is a system of self defense, a physical and mental discipline, and an Olympic Sport. Judo was founded in 1882, in Japan, by Professor Jigoro Kano, who envisioned it as a way of becoming physically and mentally fit through disciplined training. It is designed so that it can be practiced by all ages, both male and female. Judo is safe and does not involve any kicking or striking techniques. It is an excellent activity to increase physical fitness, self-esteem and self-defense.

Visit princetonymca.org for more class information.

Kokikai Aikido offers kids and teens who want to study a martial art a unique and powerful option to the "kicking and punching" disciplines. Aikido, a "throwing" art, is entirely self-defensive. Students learn how to evade different types of attacks (chokes, grabs, punches, kicks, etc.) and take control of the situation, neutralizing an attack without harm to anyone .

FALL FENCING With the number of students going on to high school fencing teams and fencers getting ready for USFA (United States Fencing Association) competitions, students whose goal is to be competitive will require more than one lesson per week. This schedule and the number of classes offered will allow students to achieve this goal. Those students wishing to take additional classes during the session may take the next level higher for their second class. Example: Students choosing Intermediate Foil 1 may take an Intermediate Foil 2 class as their additional class for that session, those taking #2 may take a #3 class in addition and so on. If there are any questions on this system please contact Instructor Charles Hurley at [email protected] or visit www.phyfencing.com

Exciting developments are on their way at the Princeton Family YMCA! The YMCA's board of directors is delighted to announce several updates to the facility to improve members' experiences and help us make an even greater impact in the community in areas of healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.

Projects include:

The addition of a women's restroom to the Fitzpatrick Wellness Center

A new reception area featuring two new, updated unisex restrooms and a beautiful new Child Watch room.

An updated women's locker room changing area with new entrance and air conditioning.

A new family changing area.

Updated office areas featuring a conference room for volunteer meetings.

Construction is expected to take approximately eight weeks, wrapping up in mid-October.

During construction, alternative entrances will be designated for members to utilize the facility and participate in programs. We appreciate your patience and will make every effort to keep you posted regarding construction updates.

All programs and classes will operate during construction, except Child Watch services, which will be suspended until the construction is complete.

In addition to the exciting physical changes, members will also see expanded lap swim time.

These projects are possible through the generosity of private donors. If you are interested in learning more about these or future projects, please contact Denise Soto, Development and Communications Director by phone at 609.497.9622 x209 or via email at [email protected]
