RELAY FOR LIFE

Congratulations to the students, parents and staff who supported the St Brigid's College “Relay For Life” team on Friday night and Saturday morning. Once again it was fantastic for our school community to be part of a wonderful event that helps make a difference in the fight against Cancer. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations to Jessica Handisides' (Yr 12) on her Product Design & Technology piece titled "Back Road To Bluesfest" which is currently being displayed at Top Designs. Top Designs is an annual exhibition at Melbourne Museum presenting work created by students who completed VCE Media, Product Design and Technology, Food and Technology, Systems Engineering, Visual Communication Design and VCE VET Interactive Digital Media. Well done, Jessica.

Congratulations also to Jackson Brand (Yr 9) on his selection into the Western Bulldogs Leadership Program. This intensive 6 month program provides Jackson with hands on opportunities to build capacities in leadership, teamwork, communication, goal setting and resilience and will enable Jackson to contribute and grow as a leader in his community. Well done, Jackson.

And congratulations to Sebastian Dalgleish (Yr 11) on his selection into the 2017 AFL Victoria Field Umpire Rookie Squad. The purpose of this squad is to bridge the gap between community and State League umpiring by providing Sebastian with a good understanding of the fitness and the professionalism required at this level. Well done, Sebastian.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION DRILL

Earlier today all staff and students participated in a practice fire drill. As part of the emergency procedures for St Brigid’s College there are Wardens and Communication Officers for any practice drill or actual emergency. These people are recognisable by their white or red helmets and orange vests and form the school structure of the ECO (Emergency Control Organisation).

The Emergency Control Organisation consists of:

CHIEF WARDEN COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER WARDENS

These people have the authority to stop all visitors entering St. Brigid’s during a drill or actual emergency. Today’s drill was completed in a most efficient and effective manner.

CARITAS WALKATHON

Project Compassion is the appeal of Caritas which is the Catholic Church's International aide agency which supports international disasters and global poverty. The appeal is conducted each Lenten season and St Brigid’s has traditionally been a significant supporter of this project.

As part of our last day of the term organisation, all staff and students will participate in our Holy Week liturgy, celebrated by Fr. Peter Hudson, in the stadium during Period 4. (Normal timetabled classes will run in Periods 1-3)

After our liturgy, we will participate in the “K’s for Caritas” walkathon organised by Mr Harslett and his Unit 3/4 RE class to Weir Park and return in time for homeroom and dismissal at 2.30pm. The day will be a coloured clothes day with a gold coin donation to Caritas.

This is a whole school event and as such, imperative that all students participate. We hope that next Friday we will raise significant money for Caritas.

Students will return for Term 2 on Tuesday, 18th April. Parent/Teacher meetings to discuss student’s progress will be held on Monday, 24th April from 2.00pm - 7.00pm. Interview times can be booked through the Parent Access Module (PAM) which will be opened on Thursday, 30th March. Should families not have access to the internet, a parent is welcome to contact the school (telephone: 53823545) so that a booking can be made through the Front Office.

GREATER WESTERN SWIMMING

We wish our small but talented St Brigid’s swimming squad well for the Greater Western Swimming competition tomorrow at Ballarat.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We offer our prayerful support to the Parish family on the recent death of Florence Pearce, great grandmother of Teejay (Yr 12). Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College

RELAY FOR LIFE

On Friday the 17th of March, the community of Horsham assembled down at Coughlin Park, where we all stayed over night and walked continuous laps of the oval to raise money and awareness for cancer. Through the Horsham & District Relay For Life, there were 34 teams that consisted of 594 members registered to walk laps on the night. All up Horsham and District Relay For Life raised over $100,000. St Brigid’s College had a team of 82 members and raised a total of $3,059.43 (we had a goal of $2,000) all to go towards finding a cure for cancer. It was a great night spent with fellow students and teachers. As it became dark, some left to sleep at home while others rolled out swags and set up tents to stay the night. We all took turns carrying the baton around to do laps, these laps all of which are counted. As a school we raised money throughout the term by selling pancakes at breakfast club for $1 and then by having a purple coloured clothes day on the Friday of Relay for Life. This coloured clothes day was a gold coin donation and all the money from these fundraisers went straight to our total money raised for Relay For Life. We bet our goal of money raised and hope to improve more and more each year. Overall it was a great, fun night and day where we all got to do our part to help a great cause and find a cure for cancer.

FLAWED is set in a powerfully realised society where perfection is valued above humanity, with an intense love story at its centre. Good-girl Celestine has always agreed with the system but following an act of kindness towards one of the Flawed is herself excluded and soon she is fighting for her own survival - and for love. Hugely accessible, emotionally resonant and with a character who will seize the hearts of anyone who meets her, this is the ideal book for anyone who has ever felt the pressure to be perfect.

Jessica Handisides' (Year 12) Product Design & Technology piece titled "Back Road To Bluesfest" was shortlisted and selected late last year to be exhibited in Top Designs.

Top Designs is an annual exhibition at Melbourne Museum presenting work created by students who completed VCE Media, Product Design and Technology, Food and Technology, Systems Engineering, Visual Communication Design and VCE VET Interactive Digital Media. Exhibits include garments and articles using fibre, yarn and fabric, graphic and product design, short films (also shown in Top Screen), interactive media, print layout, photography, food product planning, mechanical and electronic projects. Works are accompanied by folios and design plans comprising work briefs, client feedback and evaluation.

On Friday evening Top Designs held their opening and was a spectacular event - with food and drinks supplied by VCAL students from St John's College, Dandenong, and an introductory speech delivered by Mr Chris Wardlaw, Chair of the VCAA. The exhibition was officially opened by Ms Beci Orpin, a Melbourne Designer, Illustrator and Author.

"There were 1300 applications overall for the exhibition, so Jessica has truly done very well to have her work selected. There were only eight Textiles' products in the final exhibit. All the other Textiles exhibitors were from metropolitan schools including schools such as Genazzano, Siena College and Cantebrury Girls' Secondary College. So it's very exciting to see that Jessica has certainly made a name both for herself and St Brigid's College."

- Mrs Cathy van Dyk

Well done Jessica on this extraordinary achievement!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We have just received news that the group of students arriving from Japan in Term 3 for three weeks will comprise of 15 girls. We have, so far, offers of a home for seven girls. Please, consider the possibility of having one come and stay with you for those three weeks. Contact Ms Allen in the Languages Office for information about remuneration, responsibilities, dates, rewards, etc.

Also, homes for four gorgeous kittens are needed! A home has been found for the mother, who is a peaceful and calm cat. Her temperament is shared by her kittens; they are tame and responsive and purr a lot. Two are orange, one is a soft grey like his mother, the other is a tabby grey with black markings. All will be available through Horsham PAWS and the Council once they have received their vet check. Ms Allen is their interim carer. Please come and see her at the Languages Office or email [email protected]

SPORTS NEWS

WOMENS FOOTBALL | Congratulations to Year 12 students, Tara Jasper and Aily McAuliffe who debuted in her first game for the Greater Western Rebels on the weekend! Both girls were part of St Brigid's state finalist girls football team in 2013 that begun their passion to pursue an interest in this great game. It has led to many opportunities including Aily being screened by AFLW teams last weekend which may lead to her potentially being drafted! Great work girls - motivating for any St B's girls wanting to get involved in girls footy!

VCAL IN ACTION VOLUNTEERING AT THE HORSHAM FISHING COMPETITION

For one of his VCAL projects Year 11 student Josh Haby volunteered at the recent Horsham Fishing Competition. He was asked to help set up for the Wild Action Man Chris Humfrey. Josh got to meet Chris and helped him put different animals inside the soundshell ready for the show. Josh then helped Chris with three different presentations, in different locations to promote the Wild Action Show. Josh

helped with a range of different animals such as a Koala, Red Neck Wallaby, Blue Tongue Lizard and Howling Owl. This was a great opportunity for Josh as he has a strong interest and love of animals. This project also helped Josh to meet a number of his learning outcomes for VCAL Personal Development Skills.

CREATING PARTNERSHIPS

Workplace learning is a very important part of the VCAL Program at St Brigid’s College. This term Year 11 VCAL student Harry Bryan has been completing his work placement at the Sunnyside Lutheran Nursing Home. Harry is also completing Certificate II in Community Services as a VET program. Completing work placement will give Harry the opportunity to learn more about the Aged Care Industry. Another important part of VCAL is project work. Harry, along with two other Year 11 students Baccara Mackley and Nikita Jorgensen will start a project for VCAL Personal Development Skills next term at the Lutheran Nursing Home. The project is called ‘Life Stories’. The students will spend time each week with a resident, talking to them about different parts of their lives. They will then document the stories they hear. It is fantastic to have this partnership with the Lutheran Nursing Home and we thank them for their support. Below is a photo of Harry, Baccara, Nikita and Lutheran staff Sharlene Abraham and Dawn Hutchinson.

YEAR 10 PATHWAYS TO THE FUTURE

This term Year 10 students have started their ‘career journey.’ The first step has been to explore:

What motivates them

What are their strengths, abilities and qualities?

What are they passionate about and

The importance of a positive self-concept. The students have started to complete their career action plan- MIPS Online, develop SMART goals and create a current resume To help students to identify possible ‘careers’ that may best suit them they have been using a number of Career Assessment Tools. These are fantastic resources and a good starting point for further career exploration. The students have used three ‘free’ resources that can be found under the Career Bookmark link on SIMON. These are MyFuture, Job Outlook and Wirl.

The Year 10 students also have access to another Career assessment Tool provided free by MAS Experience. The ‘Harrison Assessment’ takes approximately 20 minutes for students to complete. The students will receive a detailed report that will highlight possible careers and pathways to explore in Term 2.
