excellence in sport AND Physical activityfor allPROSPECTUS 2013-15

The quality of teaching across the PE department at Bishop Barrington Sports Academy has been judged as outstanding in a recent Ofsted visit (March 2013). Many outstanding features included high activity levels, pupils able to think and act independently, pupils being able to lead aspects of lessons confidently, and being able to reflect and analyse their work effectively. Four PE lessons were observed by Ofsted inspectors and all achieved the highest possible grade of OUTSTANDING. The report stated that our teachers were outstanding and that pupils made rapid progress during lessons. Furthermore, it was stated that pupil relationships with each other and the staff are excellent as well as behaviour and engagement levels being high. This has been created by building a 21st Century curriculum which is personalised, delivered in a variation of exciting ways using the most up-to-date teaching strategies and technologies. This is also evident in the high participation of extra curricular opportunities which have included lunch and after school clubs, house competitions, sporting teams, or representing the school on adventurous activity trips. This was recognised as part of a Local Authority good practice visit in 2012, which identified the department’s assessment practices to be outstanding. We were also proud to receive the Durham Dales Sport and Physical Activity Award for Secondary School Contribution to PE and School Sport in 2012.

Bishop Barrington Sports Academy - Our VisionBishop Barrington is proud of its outstanding school and community sports’ provision. Our reputation for sporting excellence is well established and also well deserved. Our PE Department is at the leading edge of teaching and learning and this has been recognised by both the Local Authority’s Best Practice Report and by Ofsted during our 2013 Inspection. Indeed, the quality of teaching in all PE lessons observed during the Ofsted inspection was judged to be outstanding.

Our school’s ethos is underpinned by the seven Olympic Values, and our mantra is to Go for Gold in every aspect of achievement and school life. Anyone who visits Bishop

This is also embraced within our House System and is reflected in the many opportunities for students to demonstrate outstanding leadership. We are particularly proud of our Sports Outreach work with Primary Schools and of our Student Sports Leaders, who represent the very best of young people in our local and wider community. Our Sports Academy offers a wealth of sporting opportunities and is well known within our local community as a hub for outstanding sporting coaching and facilities. I am very proud to be leading a school which offers so many opportunities for children and adults to excel in, and enjoy, sporting activity. Its reputation as a flagship for sporting excellence is certain to continue.

We also have Jujitsu delivered by Sensei Graham Tomaszko, 5th Dan Jujitsu and Kempo Jitsu. All our community clubs and Bishop Barrington Sports Academy are delivered by high level, CRB checked coaches and tutors.

For more information on our community provision see here:

At Bishop Barrington School we have a fully embedded House Championship, which has become an integral part of everyday school life. The House Championships mission statement is:

To allow pupils to have a sense of identity and community outside of their normal class/ form/friendship groups in a competitive environment.

The House Championship arose from pupil voice discussions, during which highlighted that this was something they had particularly enjoyed at primary school.

Every pupil is a member of one of the four houses; Barnard, Raby, Auckland or Witton. The houses meet for assemblies every half term and ,throughout the year, pupils earn Vivo Miles. These contribute to the overall house score. Points can be won through competing in the house competitions, attending extra curricular clubs and for positive behaviour. House competitions come from all areas of the curriculum and have included Netball, Paper Aeroplane Competition, Maths Challenges and many more. Each house has captains who are elected due to their skills in leadership. The House Captains act as ambassadors for their house and acting as the organisers of competitions as well as being role models to other pupils. At the end of the year, a house is declared as overall House Champion and members reap the benefits of a rewards afternoon.

House System Leadership

Our year 10 students have completed their Sports Leaders L2 and have led activities for hundreds of primary school pupils.

Leadership at Bishop Barrington PE Department is a huge part of the curriculum which has now become fundamental to pupils learning. It is a common theme at both KS3 and KS4. Leadership at KS3 comprises of pupils beginning to take responsibility for their own behaviour then developing the skills to become coaches, warm up leaders and performance evaluators.

Leadership at KS4 comprises of the vast amount of students gaining a leadership qualification in Sports Leaders Level 1, Sports Leaders Level 2, Young Tennis Officials or Dance Leaders. These are nationally recognised qualifications which help bolster students CV when they look for further education. Pupils often lead groups of 30 primary school pupils in carefully planned sessions, umpire games and coach teams during competitions. All of this combined means that pupils on leaving Bishop Barrington School have enhanced their leadership skills as a result of a carefully planned and structured curriculum making them more independent and employable.

Primary Outreach At Bishop Barrington School, we firmly believe in using the skills of our specialist teachers to enhance the opportunities that local primary school students receive. This is typified by the work of the PE department which has created a bespoke programme for local primary schools. The department provides curriculum support to schools which have identified areas that they wish to improve upon with support in teaching, planning, assessment and extra curricular activities.

Across the year the department provides support in over 10 local primary schools which has helped raise the profile of sport in the local area as well as raising standards of PE at primary school level. The department also offers out its facilities to partner schools to allow them to give pupils the chance of taking part in sports they normally would not have the chance to, such as the use of the trampolines, tennis courts or dance studio.

We host many of the Primary School Sports Festivals and local Bishop Auckland Area Games, in sports such as Tennis, Basketball, Netball, Multi-Skills and Dance. This gives pupils the opportunity to compete against other local schools as well as experiencing sport in excellent facilitates which can inspire pupils to take up sport more regularly.
