Brainstorm This is my brainstorm that I have created on combinations and alliances. I have thought

of many different things that can be associated with combinations and alliances. This brainstorm will make it easier to pick out 4 possible ideas to experiment and investigate.

Once I have picked my 4 desired topics to investigate, I will make a list of 5 questions that I will research to give me information about the topic, so I can have a better understanding.

Olympics 2012 + Advertising

What is the Olympics? The Olympic Games is a major international event featuring summer and winter sports,

where thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games have come to be known as the world’s leading sports competition where more than 200 nations participate. The Games are held every two years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games.

How many times has London hosted the Olympics? Twice. Once in 1908, and a second time in 1948. The 2012 Olympic games will also be held in

London. When will the London Olympics take place? The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012,

followed by the 2012 Paralympics Games from 29 August to 9 September. How many countries are expected to take part in the London 2012 Olympics? We expect 205 nations to take part in 300 events at the Olympic Games in 2012. 147 nations

will take part in the Paralympic Games. What are the 2012 Olympic events? Archery, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, canoe / kayak, cycling, diving,

equestrian, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, soccer / football, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, triathlon (swimming, biking, running), volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, wrestling.

Official London 2012 logo:

I am going to be looking at Olympics 2012 and advertising as everything about the Olympics is always being advertised. There’s logo’s on all posters raising the awareness.

War + Death What is war?

War is an organized, armed, and often a long-lasting conflict that is carried on between states, nations, or other parties. Extreme aggression and social disruption occur. War should be understood as intentional and widespread armed disagreement between political communities, and therefore is defined as a form of political violence. An absence of war (and other violence) is known as peace.

What was the biggest war in history?

The biggest war in history is world word 2. This is due to the fact it’s the war with the highest amount of deaths to date, with the total number of deaths being 63,185,500.

How long has the longest war lasted?

The "Roman-Persian Wars” is the longest known war recorded. It began with the Roman invasion of Parthia in 92 BC and lasted till 627 AD. Meaning the war lasted more than 700 years.

Page 5: ExamA2

Peace + Happiness What is peace?

Peace is a state of harmony characterized by the lack of violent conflict. In international relations, peace is not only the absence of war or conflict, but also the presence of cultural and economic understanding .

Are there any peace organisations?

There are hundreds of peace organisations out there, trying to promote and create peace among people. I looked at one organisation as I couldn’t quote every single one. This organisation is called ‘Nonviolence Peaceforce’. There ‘about us’: “As an unarmed, paid civilian peacekeeping force, Nonviolent Peaceforce fosters dialogue among parties in conflict and provides a protective presence for threatened civilians. With the headquarters in Brussels, NP peacekeeping teams are presently deployed in Sri Lanka, in the Mindanao region of the Philippines and in Sudan.”

Is there a link between Peace and happiness?

“It seemed that the happiness that I was experiencing was in direct relation to what was happening, what was going on, or whether or not something (and the ‘something’ kept constantly changing) was in my life or not. It appeared that my happiness was directly relating to my income, who was in my life at that specific time, my productivity, or some altered state of the mind. I soon realized that I was allowing my relationships with people, my relationship with my bank account, my relationship with my business, etc. to dictate my happiness.

Page 6: ExamA2

The more I looked inward, the more I saw that peace always resides inside; it is always there. I saw that it would be hidden from me by my thoughts. I saw that it was covered over with my judgments, and I saw that it was masqueraded by ego. Yes, happiness was nice, but peace was bliss! I no longer strive to just be happy, because I realized that when I was peaceful, happiness would come along for the ride.” – Vedam

What is inner peace?

Inner peace refers to a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace, with enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself strong in the face of discord or stress. Being "at peace" is considered by many to be healthy homeostasis and the opposite of being stressed or anxious. Inner peace is generally associated with bliss and happiness.

Music + Musical Instruments What is music?

Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its common elements are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The word derives from Greek (mousike; "art of the Muses").

What are musical instruments?

A musical instrument is a device created or adapted for the purpose of making musical sounds. In principle, any object that produces sound can serve as a musical instrument—it is through purpose that the object becomes a musical instrument.

Artist Research Jason Kuhrt is a designer in Montreal

Canada. I found his work on Google through his blog. There’s not much information on Jason’s blog about himself personally. He uses programs such as Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign and other programs used to design websites. I was drawn to this particular artwork Jason created to the right, as I thought the use of shapes and effects he used very fascinating and inspiring. I enjoyed the use of brushes and layer mixing, seeing how you can emphasis certain parts by arranging layers differently. I text technique that wraps around the page, and leads the eye to the text where it ends. The typography is great, I enjoy how the text stays in it’s format, but plays by the rules and considers other layers and there positioning.

Here is some more work he has created:

Artist Research Radim Malinic / Brand Nu is an award winning art director, illustrator and graphic designer

based in London, England. Under the name of Brand Nu he works with leading household brands as well as upcoming business, playing a crucial part in the formation of brand language, product advertising, print illustrations and web solutions. Radim Malinic has firmly established himself over the last few years as one of the most successful and prolific commercial illustrators working today. His award winning work is renowned worldwide for its innovation, passion and attention to intricate detail.

Radim has worked with some many world wide famous companies. I chose to look at Radims work as I was instantly drawn to his work when I first saw his imaginative and abstract work. His work often has a focus in the middle looking brightly emphasised, patterns and shapes surrounding the image, with colours blending throughout each other . Showing a colourful beautiful abstract design. Radims work is often colourful and very busy looking with so many different things happening, but there’s still that main point your attention is brought to. Radmins techniques are great for advertisement, as you’re eyes are grabbed from once glance. This image below is a great example of how the Smirnoff bottle is being advertised. I think it’s great how a few shapes here and there can really make the design more intereseting, as I can see in Radims work that different effects, layer orders, and changing opacity levels can really create an interesting vibe to your artwork.

I will be experimenting with Radmin techniques and styles when I am next working on some artwork.

For experimentation on this topic I designed a possible poster

idea on Photoshop using 3 primary photos I had taken. In this design I have cut out the man in the image in the race start position. I then used the other two images too show through his legs. I used a few brushes on this work as well to make it more interesting.

Experimentation

Page 12: ExamA2

Experimentation

Here are the pictures I collected on War and death. I took a picture of one of my old bb guns and had a picture I took of Normandy graves when I went to France. On the next page is my outcome.

Page 13: ExamA2

War and Death This is a poster experiment of war and death. In this work I have used a total of 3 images. I have tried layer experimentation, using different images to work with other images differently through ordering layers differently, as well as opacity and ill levels. Brand Nu and Jason Kuhrt have both inspired me and helped to create this design.

Page 14: ExamA2

Experimentation Here are my experimentation posters of peace

and happiness.

Page 16: ExamA2

Experimentation The work I created on music and musical instruments

was largely influenced by Jason Kuhrt, as I tried using similar styles and techniques that he uses. I noticed the shapes in his work and tried sing similar effects on mine. Creating different size shape sizes, experimenting with layers, brushes and opacity and fill of layers and shapes. Here are the primary images that I took to use in my work. Other things such as brushes were used in Photoshop.

Page 17: ExamA2

Experimentation Here is a poster idea of musical instruments and music. This idea was made using 6 primary images, with an Olympic quote from the internet with some Photoshop brushes. Jason Kuhrt really inspired me to create this, as I created this in the style of his icograde design culture poster because it was so unique. I played around with using brushes on

Certain layers, and changing around the adjustments seeing what interesting effects may occur. I placed the guitar in the middle of the work and kept it being the brightest colour to emphasis it.

Page 18: ExamA2

Topic of choice and Research I have chosen Olympic games and Advertising as the subkect I am going to research and develop. Here are old posters and logos from previous years. These posters and logos have a very simplistic feel to them. I shall take some ideas from these and experiment with similar styles in my work to come, but I believe I am going to try go for a more modern colourful designs with influence from Brand Nu and Jason Kuhrt.

Page 19: ExamA2

Possible Logo Designs Here are my logo designs I have drawn on paper. I am planning to create a few different logo’s that I can place on other work, such as posters and tickets.

Page 20: ExamA2

Logo’s Here are some logo’s I created on Photoshop and illustrator. I have made them all the Olympic colours, which are blue black red yellow and green. I did this as I wanted the colours to be bright and colourful aswell as the fact these colours are greatly known and associated with the Olympic games. Text has been used to state it’s London 2012 Olypmic Games.

Page 21: ExamA2

Logo’s These logo’s have been created on photoshop. This logo is the London 2012 Olympic torch logo. I drew the shape with the pen tool and then gave it a brush stroke. I filled the sections in my desired colours, changed the blending options to add shadows and textures.

Page 22: ExamA2

Logo’s In this logo I used the Olympic colours to try interpret the circle as being the world and the colours flying around it, shows the excitement and greatness of the Olympic games from all around the world. The letters L D and N represent Lodnon as they’re holding the 2012 Olympics.

Page 23: ExamA2

Images used Here are primary images that I have and will use to create my pieces.

Development and pan

Here is development in the first initial design poster I created.i have two different outcomers here. On with the legs and arms of the man brightened, and one with a running track and stadium seats in his legs. They have both been added with many different brushes and strokes in the bright Olympic colours.

Page 26: ExamA2

Poster Idea 1

Here I have drawn a possible poster design. This poster includes some designs I have created with logo’s and a quote added to connect it to the Olympics and make it relevant. With the developed poster design I created I have added a background of a running track and edited it to be black and white.

Page 27: ExamA2

I have added a famous Olympic quote as well as 3 logo’s to complete this work.

Poster 1

Page 28: ExamA2

Post Idea 2

Here is my designing of another possible poster. This poster includes another one of the initial developed ideas. I have added 3 logo’s in the poster, to associate it with the London Olympics.

Page 29: ExamA2

Poster 2 I have added a primary picture of the stadium seats as the background to this poster. I have edited the background by trying techniques similar to Brand Nu. He often uses lines and shapes, whilst using brushes to cause unique and exciting artwork to glance at.

I have also added the 5 Olympic colours to go across the bottom of the poster. That then had ‘Olympic games’ cut out.

Page 30: ExamA2

Poster 3 Here is my poster design and the finished poster. I have used 4 pictures and 2 logo’s, with one quote to create this poster. I wanted to keep this one quite simple, with not much area edited giving it a more simplistic feel. I have played around with layer positioning as well as the adjustments and opacity levels.

Page 31: ExamA2

Poster Idea 4 This idea was inspired by the 2008 Beijing Olympic poster. I tokk the same idea but designed it a little differently, with my own pictures and logo’s. I choose to design this as I thought it was a very great simplistic idea but also very effective and eye catching. The only colours used are the Olympic games colours.

Page 32: ExamA2

This is the final poster design. I am happy with the outcome and the information required.

Page 33: ExamA2

Post Idea 5 Here is my 5th poster design, initial idea and developed idea. I have used one picture with 3 logos to create this poster. In this poster I cut out the image of the man and then duplicated it. One of the copies I divided by 5 sections and filled each section a different colour of the Olympic colours. The other copy I lowered the opacity level so certain details such as hands and creases in clothes can be seen. When experimenting I created this Olympic colour background which I believe looks great with the weightlifter.

Page 34: ExamA2

Poster 5

I have now added an Olympic quote in the middle of the image. I’ve also taken away the head and replaced it with the flame on the Olympic torch logo.

Page 35: ExamA2

Poster Idea 6

Here I had an idea of an Olmypician swimming yhrougb though waves to get to the throphys at the end. I designed this poster intending to make it colourful and involve some new exciting techniques. I have used 3 images, 3 logo’s, with a lot of brushes and shapes. Here are the steps inwhich it took me to create the final one.

Page 36: ExamA2

Poster 6

This is my final outcome of the poster. I am pleased with how it has turnt out and have added the throphys. Because I was previously experimenting with artist techniques and styles, it has improved my skills and helped me to create something I couldn't have created before (the water).

Page 37: ExamA2

Exam Logo’s Here are some possible logo’s designs that I could create during the exam.

Here are the logo’s that I created during the exam.

Page 38: ExamA2

Exam Poster To the left is my drawing design of the poster I was going to create in the exam. This is the first poster I created in the exam. I experimented with layer blending and use of brushes. I used 5 different pictures to produce this work, 2 logo’s and an Olympic quote as well.

Page 39: ExamA2

Exam Ticket

Here is a Olympic ticket design and a ticket that I produced in the exam. I used two pictures to create this, with one logo and a number of brushes.

Page 40: ExamA2

Exam Ticket Here is my final ticket. After the first ticket I decided to design a new one and then create it on Photoshop. I only used one image for this, with 3 logo’s. I kept most of the colours in this Olympic colours.

Page 41: ExamA2

Exam Final Poster This is my design for my final poster, with my final poster. I wanted to add a relevant quote, with 3 logo’s and using two pictures. I wanted to keep this poster low on the amount of images being used, and spend time on creating a poster with an interesting effective background. I used textured images for background, blending with images and brushes and shapes. My artist research and experimentation has helped me create this product as I have used some Jason Kuhrt and Brand Nu techniques.
