Exam 1

1. In the book, values are described with this statement, “all other attitudes, orientations, and

behaviors arise out of an individuals values”( 62). This really hit home for me because this isgenerally saying that all we do, say, and think are spawned from our values. I truly believe that

this statement is true, and our values, whether ingrained into our heads from parents or friends,

become the everyday conscience that guides our decisions. “They are the basis for crucialdecisions, life directions, and personal tastes”(66). With crucial decisions it may come down to

values to decide whether to put a pet down, or if your going to move to another state for a job.

With life direction, your values may tell you to choose a different career if your personal beliefs

are put into contradiction every day with your current job. With personal tastes, values may tellyou to choose a different pair of shoes or a different person in a relationship.

Values surround us, threaten us, and compose us. Sometimes it isn't clear what we even

believe in. As a child, the values of our parents influence our behaviors. I believe it isn'tuntil we are ready to die that our values are set in stone. They can be contradicted daily,

changed, and changed again. From a political view, democrats and republicans challenge

the other parties values on a constant basis, and they change quite frequently as well. Sowhat is their relavance? They relate to everything including what we wear, what we eat, and

how we live. Some values are seen as “good” where some are seen as “wrong” or even evil.

We won't truly understand our core values, however, until we have lived a full life.

2. When it comes to learning, everyone learns differently. There are visual learners, abstract

learners, and those that learn only by doing. The learning cycle on page 80 creates a visual,

which is considered a tool that would be used by those who learn better with pictures anddiagrams. Accommodator is the first type of learning and what I would assume to be the most

popular. I am an accommodator because I tend to learn best by “hands on experience” and

activities. They are risk takers, and I would call myself a risk taker in some aspects of life. Ilike to gamble, and I like to bet all the time on anything and everything. Someone who wants to

start their own business like myself needs this quality.

There are those learners that use contemplating to learn looking for meaning and usingcareful observation. To me, these type of learners take too long to decide on anything and

won't get anywhere without that gut intuition that all managers need. There are those

learners that use logic and systematic thinking. These convergers are mathematical and

theory based in their thinking. I am logical, and math has always been my strongest subjectso I tend to plan things out while also taking many risks. A good manager will need to

posses all these learning abilities in order to use their mistakes to improve. A logical risk

taker will go furthest in managing a company or even a small group of people.3. Stress in the workplace is sometimes more common than stress at home; at least that's what I

feel personally. Time stressors are the most common because they often result from “having too

much to do in too little time” (121). I am a chef at a small cafe, and I often get very stressedfrom have too much work, which makes me feel like I'm not in control. When the orders keep

piling up, I get stressed and angry, making the food crappy and rushed. Encounter stressors can

be significant for a person depending on how they deal with people. If a manager gets easilyoffended and feels personally attacked every time an employee talks to them, stress will

overwhelm their job.

Situational stressors are due to the “environment in which a person lives or from an

individual's circumstances” (122). If your personal lives are interfering with your business

life, these types of stressors will chip away at your managing proficiency. There are also

those stressors that include things like fear or anticipation. These can ruin even the best

manager if they worry about things like the threats of punishment or firing or worse. To me, it all comes down to the communication aspect at home and at work. If a

manager can't communicate effectively to the employees what needs to get done, the

workers will make more stress for the manager. If someone can't communicateeffectively at home with kids or spouse, these problems will be brought to work creating

large amounts of stress. With communicating effectively and getting what needs to be

done by managing your time well, stress will only come in small batches.4. As a manager of resources, you would probably find dealing with stress as a major part of your

job. Like I said before, communicating effectively will be the most important part of

eliminating stress not just for yourself but for your employees as well. If there is a problem

between employees, find a way that they can communicate on a calm and thought out basis. If there is a problem with an employee of yours, find a way to communicate on an even playing

field. I find too often at work, that a lot of my stress comes from communicating badly with my

boss whether its scheduling issues or just a different point of view that I feel I can'tcommunicate without getting yelled at.

The other way to manage and reduce stress is through effective time management. It can be

viewed as one of the toughest things to do. “Along with the information age has come anincreasing sense that each of us is falling behind” (125). If that sentence doesn't spell stress,

I don't know what does. I always feel like I am always busy, and there isn't enough time to

get what I need done. There is enough time, however, and I just need to figure how to usethat time more effectively. As a manager, it would important that I organize my time so that

I have enough time for my employees small problems and enough time for my own larger

problems. Otherwise, all these problems will build up and create one big stress explosion,

also known as a heart attack or mid life crisis. These are the two major ways to managestress in a manager position.

5. To figure out whether to solve a problem analytically or creatively, the diagram shows that we

must first decide if there are “predictable outcomes” or “sufficient information present”. Thismeans that if a problem exists that has a few predicted solutions, there is an analytic way to

solve it by generating alternative solutions and selecting from these. On the flip side, problems

without definite solutions can be solved more creatively by using imagination and “deferredjudgement”.

Using personal opinion I think that this process cannot be used for most problems. Those

problems such as mathematical ones or problems that don't involve a infinite amount of

solutions are rare in a manager position. Most problems that occur will be from employeesand coworkers which calls for more creative problem solving. The model shows almost no

area for possible roadblocks, and wouldn't help in the least when dealing with a work

overload along with angry subordinates. When dealing with problem solving, I believe it ismore important to implement a solution based off of intuition and knowledge, and then

learn from that experience. Mistakes can often make someone a better manager than before.

The only accurate help this model gives is that it is important to evaluate alternatives whensolving analytically, and some approaches to creativity such as imagination or improvement.
