Half Year Report

Jul-Dec 2015

Drug DiscoveryFor the first time Biotechnology Master students (with Prof. Hopf) took advantage of the stereoscopic visuali-zation possibilities at KVE Rhein-Neckar this semester. Spatial observation of protein structures allows more effective drug design. For visualization and communi-cation, the students used the PowerWall and the CAVE. They looked at the structures and their change in the protein proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (PYK2) under the influence of various medicinal inhibitors (apoen-zyme ATPgS, BIRB inhibitor, Pfizer inhibitors). PYK2 plays an important role in cell motility, implicated in critically significant processes such as cell migration, spreading, mitosis and tumor metastasis.

New Hardware - more performanceThe high-resolution visualization of large data sets in the CAVE is due to the improved hardware. Big che-mical plants, vast 3D scans points or more vehicles are simultaneously reproduced with a very high frame rate, with a hardware upgrade as part of the coope-ration between John Deere and HS Mannheim making this possible. The international farm equipment manu-facturer provides the device for five sided CAVE and regularly updates the computer infrastructure. The new visualization cluster of CAVE consists of twelve workstations with Intel Xeon 3.5GHz processors E5-2637v3, 32GB of RAM and NVIDIA Quadro M6000 12 GB graphics cards. Internally, all components are con-nected on a faster 10Gbit network.

„Design Studies - Sense of Space“ Research Project

Bachelor Design students at HS Mannheim designed a trade fair stand and checked the spatial situation in its original size in the Cave. They took a visitor’s perspecti-ve and experienced the effect of proportions and spatial design, examining the dimensions of paths, entrances and doors. The design project is part of the Kommuni-kation im Raum course. Students design a stand for the watchmaker NOMOS, a small German company based in Glashütte, the home of traditional German watch-making.

Engineering SessionTebodin Peters (TPE), a subsidiary of Bilfinger group, shares a 3D model of a large chemical plant with KVE for teaching and experimental purposes. The data for the CAVE come from the 3D plant design and from laser scanning, two TPE core competencies.KVE uses the model for the demonstration of a large process plant for interested parties from industry and for teaching students from all disciplines at HS Mann-heim.

„Project kompass - Interdisciplinary Learning”Course / Lecture

Kompass project teams worked interdisciplinarily on their cargo-bike prototypes. They analyzed and op-timized their CAD models in the CAVE. Kompass is a student project in which participants from different dis-ciplines at HS Mannheim work together. In the winter semester 2015, the project ran with about 60 students. In the fictional Cargo Future AG participants developed innovative ideas, surveyed potential users and desig-ned creative models of cargo-bikes. More information under: www.kompass.hs-mannheim.de
