By ar, the most popular NewYears resolution is to lose weightand get in shape. Many o us makethis vow year afer year and we ailyear afer year.

The reason? Weve beenindoctrinated with bad inormation

about dieting and exercise that killswhatever chance we might haveo getting thinner and healthier, says Jonathan Bailor, author o agroundbreaking new book, TheCalorie Myth.

Weve received so muchcontradictory, damaging adviceover the years ofen resulting inrustration and extra pounds, he says. Its high time or us to make a betterchoice.

Here is weight loss conventionalwisdom that can actually stop yourom getting in shape.

Myth: You need to count calories tolose weight.

In his book, Bailor notes that ourancestors never counted calories. They didnt even know what a calorie

    was.Yet, somehow, very ew people

were obese beore ood startedbecoming mass produced in the earlypart o the 20th century.

Studies show that 95.4 percent othe time, counting calories does notkeep off body at over the long term,Bailor observes.

Counting calories is likerantically zigzagging through a

mindfield. Instead, i we stick tohealthy, natural oods and stopworrying about calories, our bodieswill naturally settle at a healthyweight.

Myth: We can eat anything inmoderation.

For years weve been told that itsnot what we eat that matters, itshow much. Bailor says this commonadvice is doing nothing but keeping

us at. In reality, it is the quality othe ood that is important, not thequantity.

By eating plenty o higher-quality ood, we unconsciously avoidovereating and provide our body

with nutrition that reprograms thebody to behave more like a naturallythin person, he says.

Quality oods mean those thatare unprocessed, low in sugar, with

healthy oils such as coconut andolive oil.

    Myth: All calories are createdequal.

Some oods dont satisy, eveni theyre high in calories. Youcrave calories but you also cravenutrients, says Andrew Larson,M.D., medical director o theBariatric Wellness and SurgicalInstitute at JFK Medical Center inLake Worth, Fla.

He recommends eating oodsthat are filling, low in calories,

and high in nutrients, such assalads, because they will be moresatisying than the same numbero calories rom low-nutrientoods. Taking a multivitamin canalso help. In Canadian studiespublished in theBritish Journalof Nutrition, those who tookmultivitamins during a diet andexercise program were less hungryand lost more weight.

Myth: Sex burns lots of calories. The average session o

    lovemaking burns a paltry 21

calories according to a recent studyin theNew England Journal of

Medicine. So its best not to thinko a bedroom romp as a substituteor exercise.

Myth: You burn as many calorieswalking a mile as you do running amile.

On the surace, this soundslogical because it takes muchlonger to walk a mile than it doesto run it. So the calories burnedshould be equal, right? Onlytheyre not.

A study inMedicine & Sciencein Sports & Exerciseshowed thatwomen burned an average o 91calories running a mile. Walkingburned only 43.

Myth: Bariatric surgery bringspatients down to their targetweight.

The surgery really does makepeople less hungry and think

about ood less, Dr. Larson toldHealth Radar. But that doesntmean all the excess weight willdisappear. Most people, he says,

lose between 50 and 65 percento their excess weight afer gastricband, gastric bypass, or similarprocedures. For example, wherea 100-pound loss would be ideal, the actual long-term loss is morelikely to range between 50 and 65pounds, depending upon the typeo surgery.

Myth: The new weight-loss drugsare game-changers.

Two new drugs approvedrecently by the FDA might getyour attention but they dont

replace the need or diet andexercise. They produce relativelysmall weight loss and both havedisturbing side effects.

Belviq:In studies, peopletaking the drug or a year, along

with a diet and exercise program, lost 3 to 4 percent more weightthan those taking a dummy pill.Belviq works on serotonin inthe brain, somewhat like some

antidepressants. Side effectsinclude nausea, atigue, dry mouth, dizziness, agitation, muscle spasms, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts,

    Qsymia:Pronouncedkyoo-SIM-ee-uh, the drug is acombination o phentermine,an appetite-suppressant, and

topiramate, which is used to treatepilepsy and migraines but alsoreduces the urge to eat.

In studies, in combinationwith a year-long diet and exerciseprogram, weight loss with Qsymia

was 7 to 9 percent greater thanwith a dummy pill.

Side effects include heartpalpitations, constipation, drymouth, insomnia, tingling in thetoes and fingers, altered taste, problems with mood and memory, and increased risk or glaucoma, kidney stones, low blood sugar, and birth deects.

I dont think there are anycurrent weight loss drugs that arelikely to improve the quality olie, says Dr. Larson. And or mostpeople in their 50s or 60s, risks o

all these drugs generally outweighthe potential benefits.

Myth: Exercise is all you need.Diet plays a much bigger role

than exercise in weight loss. Onestudy, published in the journalObesity, compared results o

year-long liestyle programs thatinvolved changes in diet only, exercise only, or a combinationo both, among 399 obesepostmenopausal women.

These were the results, onaverage: Diet alone: lost nearly 16

pounds (8.5% o initial weight) Exercise alone: lost nearly 4.5

pounds (2.4% o initial weight) Diet plus exercise: lost nearly 20

    pounds (10.8% o initial weight)

Myth: Working out on an emptystomach burns more fat.

Actually, its the opposite:Eating beore exercise will helpyou burn more at.

A study in theInternationalJournal of Sport Nutrition andExercise Metabolismound thatthose who ate beore a workout notonly burned more calories, but theycontinued to burn more caloriesor hours afer the exercise session.Eat a small snack beore a workoutto get the at-burning benefits.

    Misinformation Abounds

A study unded by the NationalInstitutes o Health evaluated

    various weight-loss myths againstscience.

Published in theNew EnglandJournal of Medicine, debunkedmyths included these: Small changes produce big

weight loss. Not so. For example, burning an extra 100 calories daily(or eating 100 ewer calories daily)

might produce a 10-pound weightloss in 5 years, averaging 2 poundsper year. Small, realistic goals are best.

Studies show that more ambitiousgoals lead to greater weight loss. Fast weight loss wont last. In

act, very slow weight loss can bediscouraging and thwart efforts. Eating more ruits and

vegetables always produces weightloss. Not necessarily; it depends on

    what else you eat.

Diet ThatStops CancerThe most-eared health risk in North America isthe big C, but in one recent survey, not even halo all adults were hip to the do-it-yoursel steps thatcan help wipe out an estimated 400,000 new cases ayear. The great news: Theres a bushel basket o resh

reports that reveal how a delicious, disease-fightingdiet can protect you and your amily rom becomingone o those 400,000.

A peanut butter habit in tweens and teens lowersrisk or benign breast disease (BBD) by 39 percent.BBD is a common problem that raises breast cancerrisk later in lie by as much as 56 percent. Since oneout o every our women develops BBD, this is bignews.

Nuts are breast-riendly, too (peanuts are actuallylegumes), and girls who eat some every day are a

whopping 68 percent less likely to have BBD. Somake it a habit to put peanut butter (its got be 100percent peanuts with no added sugar or bad oils!)and tree nuts (we love walnuts and almonds) on yourdaughters plate and yours.

Fruits and vegetables slash a womans risk orestrogen receptor-negative breast cancer and cutbladder cancer risk 65 percent or women and ormen who smoke. (Hal o all bladder cancers areassociated with smoking).

Phytochemicals ound in vegetables and ruits mayprotect bladder cells by mopping up damaging reeradicals. Your best cancer-fighting choices are yellow-orange vegetables (carrots, winter squash), cruciers(broccoli, kale, cabbage, mustard greens) and citrus.Commit to having nine servings a day o ruit and

veggies.Less-sugary ood plus a healthy weight equals 59

percent less endometrial cancer. When our riends atthe American Institute or Cancer Research weighedthe evidence, they concluded that 29,500 o the

50,000 cases o endometrial cancer diagnosed eachyear could be avoided i women made ood choicesthat helped them maintain a healthy weight andkept blood sugar levels low and steady. Extra poundsdouble or triple the risk o endometrial cancer. Thelink? Fat cells store estrogen, which uels tumor cellsin the lining o the uterus.

The best diet choices: Choose 100 percent wholegrains over processed grains and oods. Remember,i it doesnt say 100 percent whole grain, its not thechoice you want to make. And skip any ood with

added sugar or any sugar syrup.Low-at, calorie-moderate choices may slash your

risk or pancreatic cancer. A lab study showed that ahigh-at, high-calorie diet boosts precancerous cellchanges that lead to the development o this super-aggressive cancer.

In other words, weight gain causes an increase ininflammation within the pancreas. This is the mostdirect evidence yet o a link between ood choicesand pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias; lesions thatprecede this cancer. But ortunately, lesions take a

long time to develop, giving you time to change whatyou put on your plate at breakast, lunch, and dinner. So your smart step is to show saturated and trans

ats the door. Choose lean proteins such as beans, tou, skinless poultry, and proteins that are loaded

with healthy ats, such as salmon and ocean trout.Meanwhile, i youre sipping your morning java

while reading this column, youre off to a good start.Coffee, it turns out, also helps your body end offcancer o the colon, prostate, mouth, and lining othe uterus by switching on your bodys deenses andhelping to keep your bodys sugar-processing systemhumming.

    HYPERTENSION

Researchers: Simple Hand GripExercisers Lower Blood Pressure

    By Shana Aborn

High blood pressure is one othe most pervasive healthissues in this country one outo every three Americans has beendiagnosed with hypertension,

which increases risk o stroke, heart attack, and other serioushealth problems.

I you have been diagnosed with

high blood pressure, you knowthat liestyle changes can help keepyour numbers under control. Alow-sodium diet, regular exercise, and stress reduction are the usualmeasures suggested by doctors. Now, researchers have added anew weapon to the arsenal: anisometric handgrip.

    Getting a Grip

Researchers at CanadasMcMaster University recentlyasked volunteers withhypertension to spend severalminutes three times a weeksqueezing a spring-loadedhandgrip device (similar to thekind you can find in any sporting-goods store).

Afer just eight to 10 weeks, and without any change in theirdiet or exercise habits, the patientssaw their systolic blood pressure the higher number, reflectingthe pressure in the blood vesselsduring a heartbeat drop by 15points.

Their diastolic number the pressure in betweenbeats ell by three points. These are considered large

drops, comparable to what isaccomplished by medications.

Additional research oundthat handgrip exercises make the

walls o the carotid artery andother blood vessels more flexible, allowing or greater blood flow tothe heart.

Mystery MechanismWhy does this work? We

are still not sure o the exactmechanisms that result inreduced blood pressure, butits likely related to the nervoussystem regulation o the heartand blood vessels, explainsMaureen MacDonald, proessor okinesiology and the lead author othe study.

Her studies are based onoriginal findings rom the 1960s

using pilots who used handgripexercises to increase blood flowto the brain and avoid G-orce-induced blackouts during high-speed flights. Researchers oundthat pilots blood pressure waslowered afer using the grips.

Doctors caution that handgripsdont seem to cure hypertension,

which is usually diagnosed whenreadings are 140/90 or higher. However, isometric handgrips canbe an easy and sae addition tohigh blood pressure treatment.

Although the McMasterresearchers used a specialergonomic handgrip in theirstudies, Dr. MacDonald says thatother varieties o grip exercisers

would produce the same results.Handgrips can be ound or less

than $10 in department stores,on-line, and in sporting-goodsshops. Look or a grip that fits wellin your hand and that you cansqueeze easily, but not too easily.

By the end o two minutes, the grip should be quite difficultto hold, says Dr. MacDonald. Insome studies, we had participantsuse only one hand, but werecommend using both hands and

    alternating contractions.

How to Do ItTo start, hold the grip in your

right hand, squeeze it and holdor five seconds, then release.Repeat as ofen as you can or twominutes, then rest or two minutes

Switch to your lef handand repeat the squeeze-and-hold pattern or two minutes.

Continue until you completeour sets or each hand (or a totalo 16 minutes o squeezing). Asthe exercise becomes easier, tryholding your contractions or aew seconds more on each handuntil you build up strength.

Aim to do handgrip exercisesat least three days a week. Dr.MacDonald says that no researchhas yet been done to determine

whether adding more sessionsreduces blood pressure evenurther, but the exercises haveother benefits, too.

Strengthening your gripimproves dexterity, builds themuscles in your orearms, andmakes it easier to perormactivities like opening jars andlifing heavy bags.

    KIDNEY DISEASE

Kidney Disease: Protect YourselfFrom the Silent Epidemic

    By Rick Ansorge

We usually dont give much thought to ourkidneys. Most o us just take it or grantedthat the bodys filters will continue to unction asefficiently as the paper filters in our coffeemakers.

Yet, kidney disease is the nations eighth-leadingcausing o death. And it can sneak up on you beoreyou even realize you have it.

Kidney disease tends to bea silent disease until its very

advanced, says Beth Piraino, M.D.,President o the National KidneyFoundation.

Its very much associatedwith an increased risk o dying, particularly rom a cardiovascularcause.

Lietime risk o kidney disease isa surprisingly high 60 percent. Andi it is advanced, treatment optionsare ofen limited to lie-changing

options: dialysis or a kidneytransplant. You can be walking around and

think youre just perectly fine, butyou could have advanced kidneydisease and not know it, Dr.Piraino tells Health Radar.

Then all o a sudden somebodycan say that you need to go ondialysis, which can be a bit o ashock.

Even less-severe orms o kidneydisease can lead to bone disorders, anemia, and areduced quality o lie.

Although kidney disease receives little publicitycompared to other major killers, most experts are nothesitant to describe it as an exploding epidemic.

Most kidney disease comes rom high bloodpressure and diabetes, says Dr. Piraino.

Because so many people are overweight, obese, and even morbidly obese in the United States, we

have a lot more o these problems. So were gettingmore kidney disease.

Experts agree that the toll o kidney disease canbe drastically reduced with early detection. Thats

why the National Kidney Foundation has issued anew recommendation that all Americans ages 60 andolder not just those with diabetes or hypertension undergo annual kidney screenings.

The screening is a simple bloodtest that is used to estimate yourglomerular filtration rate

or GFR. A rate o less than 60milliliters per minute may indicatekidney disease.

I a blood test shows a lowGFR, a urine test can be givento check or leakage o albumin,a protein that ordinarily doesnot pass through the kidneys.A measurement o at least 30milligrams o albumin per grammay confirm kidney disease.

High levels o albumin a signo a condition called proteinuria are also associated withcardiovascular disease and a morerapid progression o kidney disease

People dont know they havethese things unless they havethe blood testing and the urinetesting, says Dr. Piraino.

I you have proteinuria and highblood pressure, its essential to takeeither an ACE inhibitor or an ARB

or hypertension. Those drugs have been shown to decrease the

proteinuria and slow the progression o the kidneydisease, says Dr. Piraino.

In general, she adds, anything that protects theheart also protects the kidneys. That includes a well-balanced diet, regular physical activity, and goodcontrol o conditions such as diabetes and highblood pressure.

The two most important thingsyou can do to protect your kidneysare to get your blood and urinetested for signs of kidney disease, and appropriately managingchronic conditions such asdiabetes, hypertension, and highcholesterol.

Kidney disease can also beprevented by:

u Cutting back on salt to 1,500 mgper day

    u Eating a heart-healthy diet

    uLimiting alcohol

    uExercising

    uLosing weight if you areoverweight

    uQuitting smoking

uReducing or eliminating over-the-counter pain relieversacetaminophen, naproxen, andibuprofen.

ASK THE DOCTOR with Richard L. Shames, M.D.

    Graves Disease:Alternative Therapies Can Help

Q: What is Graves disease?A:Graves disease is named afer Dr. Robert J.Graves, a amous Irish surgeon who lived in the1800s. It is a disorder that causes the thyroid glandto secrete higher than normalamounts o thyroid hormone, resulting in hyperthyroidism,or overactive thyroid. The excesshormone production is causedby the overstimulation o thisimportant gland by antibodies o

a patients own immune system. The condition strikes seven timesmore women than men. It is verycommon, affecting about threemillion Americans. Typical onsetis between 20 and 40 years oage, and we believe it is causedby a combination o genetictendencies ofen triggered byenvironmental actors.

Q: What are the symptoms?A:Symptoms can include atigue, low stamina, sweaty skin, swellingo the lower legs and ankles, and

weight loss. Other signs includemuscle tremors and weakness, back pain, heart palpitations, shortness o breath, diarrhea, gas, and bulging eyes.Lef untreated, Graves may cause cardiac, skin, eye,and mental complications.

Q: What is the standard treatment?A:Your physician may prescribe antithyroidmedications that interere with the thyroids useo iodine to produce hormones. These includepropylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole(Tapazole). Sometimes surgery is needed to removethe gland. Another treatment is radioactive iodinethat is taken orally and destroys the thyroid gland.Since the body still needs some thyroid hormoneto unction optimally, thyroid pills are generally

    prescribed aferward.

Q: Are there any nondrug treatments that areeffective?

A:I have ound that manyalternative therapies work wellto complement standard anti-thyroid prescription medication.Among these are acupuncture, homeopathy, vitamin andherbal supplements that slow

the action o the thyroid gland, and relaxation techniques thatcan calm an overactive immunesystem. Its also important toeliminate as many chemicals aspossible rom the diet.

Q: Is Graves curable?A:Most people with Gravesdisease live ully unctional andnormal lives. But treatment

is ofen, although not always, lielong. When the disease iswell-managed, liestyle andliespan is not greatly affected, iat all. Some accomplish this byremoving the gland with surgeryor using radioactive therapy and

going on thyroid hormone replacement therapysuch as Armour or Nature-Throid. Others mayavoid surgery or radioactive ablation and get thesame results with a personalized mix o alternativetherapies combined with anti-thyroid medicine.

Natural Solutions for a Longer, Healthier Life

Declining energy, brain fog, irritability, difculty sleeping,

hearing and vision loss these are just normal signs of

aging, right? WRONG. More often than not, theres an

asily remedied vitamin deciency underlying these symptoms. Yet

frequently goes undetected until it manifests as a neurological dis-

rder, dementia, chronic fatigue, heart disease, cancer...or worse.[1]

What Im talking about here is vitamin B12 deciency, which sad-

, affects nearly 50% of older adults.[2]If youve experienced any

f the symptoms I described above, its imperative that you take

ction NOW before irreversible damage occurs. The good news is

at a B12 deciency can be remedied easily, quickly and inexpen-

vely. But its crucial that you take the right kind of vitamin B12.

m Joshua Corn, Editor-in-Chief of theLive in the Nownatural

ealth newsletter. My passion for natural health drives me to spread

e word about simple, safe and effective health solutions.

What You Need to Know About Vitamin B12

itamin B12 is essential to life itself its one of the building

ocks of DNA. It also keeps your immune system functioning op-

mally,[3]regulates sleep cycles,[4] and is crucial to energy produc-

on, which is why its often called the energy vitamin.[5]It also

rotects your brain by keeping nerves communicating in an optimal

anner.[6,7]And studies are beginning to show that B12 helps to

wer levels of stress hormones, making it vital to heart health.[8,9]

12 Keeps Your Brain From Shrinkingcientists now understand that age-related cognitive decline is

nked to a process that involves a decrease in brain mass.[10]Thats

ght, your brain actually shrinks as you age! Research shows that

12 supplementation slows the accelerated rate of brain shrinkage

nd declining cognitive scores in older individuals.[11,12]

    12 Deciency: The Silent Epidemic

ecent studies have shown that 1 in 2 older adults have danger-

usly low levels of B12.[13]The older you are, the higher your risk,

ut younger people arent exempt. In a recent Tufts University

udy, researchers found that 1 in 4 people over age 26 are border-

ne decient in B12 and may already be experiencing symptoms.[14]

he reason that most people end up B12 decient has nothing to do

ith their B12 intake, but rather, their ability to absorb B12 from

od. As you age, the lining of your stomach loses its ability to pro-

uce hydrochloric acid, which you need to absorb B12 from food.

he use of certain drugs can also lower stomach acid secretion. [15]

    WARNING: Some B12 Contains Cyanide

he form of B12 that youll nd in most B12 products is cyanoco-

alamin, which is comprised of a cyanide molecule attached to a

obalamin (B12) molecule. Cyanide is a toxic poison that the body

    BRAIN HEALTH

    Are Medications WreckingYour Memory?

    By Lynn Allison

When people diagnosed withAlzheimers die and theyundergo autopsies, researchershave ound that almost hal othem never had the disease at all.

So what is the problem? Whywere these people mentallyimpaired near the end o theirlives? Many doctors believe

prescription drugs were causingtheir conusion, and dementia.

Nearly 90 percent o those65 and older take at least onemedication, and many o thesedrugs can cause cognitiveproblems.

Its crucial to look at therisks versus the benefits o manycommon medications given toolder people, Jacob Teitelbaum,

M.D., author o the best-sellingbookReal Cause, Real Cure, tellsHealth Radar. Physicians need tobe more careul when prescribingdrugs that can cause loss o brainunction.

The common drugs listed beloware associated with memory lossand conusion. I you are takingone or more o them themental effects are ofen moresevere when they are taken incombination talk to you doctorabout alternatives.

Benzodiazepinessuch as thepopular antianxiety drug Xanaxcan cloud areas o the brainthat affect both short- and long-term memory. Nonprescriptionalternatives include herbalremedies such as lemon balm and

    iberogast, a plant-based mixture.Tricyclic antidepressants or TCAs

directly affect brain chemistryand have not been proven to beeffective or people with mild tomoderate depression. Their useshould be reserved or severe caseso depression. Some 35 percent opeople taking these drugs reportmemory loss. I you are taking aTCA, ask your doctor i a lower

dosage would be sae.Narcotic painkillersused to treat

chronic pain rom rheumatoidarthritis, back pain, or injuryaffect the chemical messengersto the brain that are involved incognition. Ask your doctor i youcan take a non-narcotic painkillersuch as Tramadol.

Beta blockers, commonly usedto lower blood pressure, have

been associated with cognitiveproblems. They may block keychemical messengers in the brain.Examples include propranolol(Inderal), bisoprolol (Zebeta),nadolol (Corgard), and nebivolol(Bystolic). Try a different class odrugs to treat hypertension suchas an ACE inhibitor or calciumchannel blocker.

Older antihistaminesused totreat or prevent allergy symptoms Dimetane or Chlor-Trimetonare examples affect the memoryand learning centers o the brain.Substitute newer antihistaminessuch as Zyrtec or Claritin.

Dopamine agonistsare ofenprescribed to treat restless legsyndrome (RLS) or Parkinsonsdisease. Major side effects include

memory loss and conusion. Workwith your healthcare practitioneror pharmacist to see i your RLSis being triggered by anothermedication you are taking. Dr.Teitelbaum says sometimes RLSis caused by iron deficiency and

will improve or go away i erritinblood levels are raised with diet oriron supplements.

    Nonbenzodiazepine sedative

hypnotics or Z drugsused orinsomnia can not only causeshort-term memory loss, they canalso cause ull-blown amnesiaor bizarre behavior. Thesemedications include zolpidem(Ambien), eszopiclone (Lunesta),and zaleplon (Sonata).

Anticholinergicsto treat emaleoveractive bladder block the brainmessenger acetylcholine, which in

turn slows activity in the brainsmemory and learning centers.First, have your doctor rule outpossible bladder inections. Cutback on caffeine and alcoholicbeverages and practice Kegelexercises to tighten the musclesaround the bladder. Also, ask yourdoctor about a new device calledInTone that treats incontinenceand may be able to help you.

    Antiseizure epilepsy medications

are ormulated to suppresscertain brain unctions, whichcan cause memory loss. Ask yourdoctor i you can try Dilantin,an antiseizure drug that has lessimpact on memory. And i youhavent had a seizure in more thana year, Dr. Teitelbaum suggests thatyou try a lower dose.

    INFECTIOUS DISEASE

Antibiotics: The Right Way to Use ThemBy Rick Ansorge

Best practice then: You caughta bug, went to the doctor, andwalked out with a prescription oran antibiotic.

Best practice now: You catch abug, go to the doctor, and walkout with nothing except somecommon-sense advice on how tomanage your symptoms.

Thats because todays best-inormed doctors recognize that

the widespread use o antibiotics especially broad-spectrumantibiotics which wipe out a widerange o microorganisms hasbeen a horrible mistake that hasled to two grave consequences: Development o antibiotic-

resistant bacteria, which ofencause lethal disease. Destruction o beneficial

    bacteria, particularly in the gut,

which are essential or overallhealth.Despite growing awareness

that antibiotics should be atreatment o last resort, old habitsdie hard. In hospitals and clinics, about 50 percent o all antibioticuse is either unnecessary orinappropriate, says Lauri Hicks, medical epidemiologist andDirector o the Centers or DiseaseControl (CDC) program GetSmart: Know When AntibioticsWork.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterianow account or more than 2million illnesses each year and23,000 American deaths.

This is actually considered aconservative estimate, Dr. Hickstells Health Radar. We think the

numbers may be quite a bit higherthan that.

The most urgent threats comerom C.diff, a serious diarrhealinection, drug-resistant gonorrhea, and methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus, commonlycalled MRSA.

Many doctors needlesslyprescribe antibiotics against colds, flu, and other viral inections.Other viral conditions that do not

    warrant antibiotic therapy include

most cases o bronchitis, coughs, ear inections, sore throats, andstomach flu.

Bacterial conditions that ofenwarrant antibiotic therapy includesevere sinus inections, some earinections, strep throat, bladderinections, and some wound andskin inections, especially staphinections.

Narrow-Spectrum AntibioticsAre BestCurrent research suggests that

broad-spectrum antibiotics thebig guns such as azithromycin, amoxicillin plus clavulanate, andciproflaxin are most likely tocontribute to antibiotic-resistantbacteria and the destruction oriendly bacteria in the gut.

Whenever possible, choosenarrow-spectrum antibiotics suchas amoxicillin, which is ofenprescribed or ear inections andbacterial sinusitis; cephalexin,

which is ofen prescribed or skininections, and penicillin, which isofen prescribed or strep throat.

Its best to treat the symptomso common inections withremedies such as nasal saline

sprays, warm compresses, andover-the-counter pain relievers, says Dr. Hicks. To prevent bugsrom spreading, she recommendsstaying home when youre sick. Inbetter economic times, that usedto be a no-brainer. Now that somany people are terrified o losingtheir jobs, workers ofen report to

work when theyre sick, she notes.I should take my own advice,

says Dr. Hicks, who admits shehas sometimes gone to work sick

    under deadline pressure.

    Immune-BoostingSupplements

By boosting the immunesystem, some supplements canbe an alternative to antibiotics, according to the NationalCenter or Complementary andAlternative Medicine.

    Zinc:Research shows zinc helps

to reduce the length and severityo the common cold when takenwithin 24 hours afer symptomsstart.

Vitamin C:In five trials inpeople who were exposed toextreme physical stress (marathonrunners, skiers, and soldierstraining in subarctic conditions),taking vitamin C cut the numbero colds in hal.

Probiotics:A major reviewo clinical trials involving morethan 3,000 people indicated thatprobiotics might help to preventupper respiratory tract inections, such as the common cold. Mostpeople can use probiotics withoutexperiencing any side effects or

with only mild gastrointestinalside effects such as gas.

    LATEST FDA APPROVALS

New Help for EpilepsyCompiled exclusively by Health Radar, here are themost significant new drugs and medical devices

approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

EpilepsyA new implanted device stops seizures in people

with epilepsy. The neurostimulator detects abnormal electrical

activity in the brain and responds by deliveringelectrical stimulation intended to normalize brainactivity beore the patient experiences seizuresymptoms, said Christy Foreman, director o theFDAs Office o Device Evaluation.

Kelly OBrien, 28, has epilepsy and said the device called the RNS Stimulator has been lie-changing. It has given me an independence I did nothave beore, said OBrien, who lives in Columbus,Ohio. Since getting the device, my seizures havestopped. Im now able to drive again.

Smaller and thinner than an implantable heartdefibrillator, the battery-powered, programmabledevice is placed just under the skull during surgery.

These are patients who have no other resort ortreatment o their epilepsy, and this device offers new

hope or them, said Dr. Dileep Nair, an epileptologistat the Cleveland Clinic.Meanwhile, the FDA has also approved the drug

Aptiom(eslicarbazepine acetate) to help treat adultswith partial epileptic seizures. So-called partialseizures are the most common type o seizure amongpeople with epilepsy.

LymphomaImbruvica(ibrutinib) has been approved to treat

mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), a rare but aggressiveorm o blood cancer. MCL represents about 6percent o non-Hodgkins lymphoma cases. By thetime its usually diagnosed, it has spread to otherareas such as the lymph nodes or bone marrow.

Imbruvica, designed to inhibit an enzyme thatcancer cells need to spread, was granted the FDAsrare breakthrough therapy status as a drug thatpromises to offer a substantial improvement overavailable therapies or patients with serious or lie-threatening diseases, the agency said.

Thyroid CancerApproval or the anticancer drug Nexavar

(soraenib) has been expanded to include late-stagedifferentiated thyroid cancer, the most common typeo thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer is diagnosed in an estimated 60,000Americans a year, and some 1,800 die annually romthe disease.

Nexavar is designed to inhibit proteins thatprompt cancer cells to divide and grow. The newapproval is meant or people with differentiatedthyroid cancer that no longer responds to radioactiveiodine treatment.

Hepatitis COlysio, also known as simeprevir, has been

approved as a treatment or chronic inectionwith the liver-destroying hepatitis C virus. Olysio,a protease inhibitor that blocks a specific proteinneeded by the virus to replicate, is to be used incombination with intereron, given by injection, andribavirin, another pill.

Hepatitis C affects about 3.2 million Americans, killing more than 15,000 people each year, mostly

rom associated illnesses such as cirrhosis and livercancer. The ofen-undiagnosed virus is transmitted

through contaminated blood. Inection rates havedropped since the early 1990s, due in part to theintroduction o blood and organ screening. Olysio

was shown in clinical trials to cure patients with ashorter duration o treatment.

HeartburnThe first generic versions o the anti-GERD drug

AcipHex(rabeprazole sodium) have been approved.Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also knownas chronic heartburn, is a very common disordercharacterized by backward flow o stomach acid tothe esophagus. This process could damage tissue inthe esophagus, the tube that connects the throat andstomach.

The drug is among a class called proton-pumpinhibitors, which are designed to reduce the amounto stomach acid produced.

the social skills o people withautism, according to a study atMonash University in Australia.

Researchers used a techniquecalled repetitive transcranialmagnetic stimulation to delivermagnetic impulses into a part othe brain called the dorsomedialprerontal cortex (dmPFC).

    The dmPFC lets people

understand others eelings, and it isless active in people with autism.

Study volunteers with Aspergerssyndrome, a common orm oautism, who were given 15 minuteso magnetic stimulation or 10days showed a significant increasein social skills compared to theplacebo group that didnt get thetreatment.

    NUTRITION & WELLNESS

Fructose in Fruit and Juices:What You Need to Know

    By Dieter Hogen

Ilove ruit. I cant imagine living without thewonderul variety, shapes, colors, smells, and tasteso this antastic natural ood.

Because o its rich vitamin, mineral, phytochemical, and fiber content there is no doubtabout the health benefits o ruit. It fights cancer andheart disease, improves digestion, and helps the bodydetoxiy. It is a great addition to everyones diet.

Fruit is an excellent snack any time o the day,

but it is also a great addition to many differentdishes. Having an apple or a banana with oatmeal;adding berries, grapes, or other ruit to yogurt andsmoothies; and making ruit pies are very commonpractices throughout the world and in differentcultures.

How Much Is Too Much? There is one big problem: Fruits contain two

different kinds o sugar glucose and ructose.Lately there has been a lot o discussion about

ructose, which is also known as ruit sugar, andits detrimental effects on our metabolism. World-renowned experts on the subject recently came up

with a very specific number o ructose 25 grams(just under an ounce) that they say we should notexceed in one day.

Much more ruit sugar than that on a regular basisand we risk insulin resistance, high blood ats, highblood pressure, unusual weight gain and chronicinflammation, so say the experts.

I thought it would be interesting to find out

what my own daily consumption o ructose is anddid a little research. On most days I would eat onelemon (squeezed into a drink), one orange or a halgraperuit, plus lots o berries.

Fruit sugar content Lemon: 1.5 grams Orange: 8 grams Berries (10 ounces): 11 grams

This means I get about 20.5 grams o ruit sugar ona typical day. I I substitute a hal graperuit (5 gramso ructose) or the orange, as I sometimes do, I get

even less sugar. There are days when I eat grapes, pineapple,

mango, apple, or pear, all o which have more sugarthan the ruits I normally eat. But, even then, Id stillbe under the 25-gram ructose limit.

So, eating good amounts o ruits on a daily basisdoesnt seem to present problems or health quitethe opposite when you consider all the pleasure andhealth benefits we get.

You certainly have to be more careul i youreoverweight or have blood sugar/insulin-related issues.

What about fruit juice?Again, I did a test. I took three oranges and juiced

them to fill one small glass. The ructose in that oneserving o orange juice is about 24 grams, almost 100percent o the daily limit.

Without going any urther I think it becomes clearthat drinking concentrated ruit juice is not a goodidea.

Also, be very careul with dried ruit. It is a highlyconcentrated sugar source and should be eaten inonly small amounts at a time.

Whats the solution? Eat whole ruits and use ruitjuices other than lemon or lime sparingly a ewsprinkles to flavor a drink, or instance.

Ice cubes and a little lemon, lime, or orange juiceadded to plain water, sparkling water, or tea makes atasty, rereshing drink no one must eel guilty about.

    SKINCARE

7 Ingredients You Never Want toSee on a Skin Care Label

    By Lynn Allison

I you took the skincare andgrooming section o a store andburied it in the ground, it wouldbe declared a hazardous wastedump. Thats how dangerousmany o the chemicals in theseproducts are.

One in eight ingredientsused in personal care products

are industrial chemicals thatinclude carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormonedisruptors.

Many o these chemicals areconsidered sae in low doses bythemselves, Nneka Leiba, senioranalyst at the EnvironmentalWorking Group (EWG), aconsumer watchdog, told HealthRadar.

But we are concerned aboutthe damage they can causerepetitively over time andsynergistically with each other. There is no research or data orthis.

The Food and DrugAdministration has no authorityover cosmetic manuacturers anddoes not require these companiesto test products or saety.

Cosmetic companies may useany ingredient except or certaincolor additives and substancesclassified as drugs.

Banned in Other CountriesMore than 500 cosmetic

products sold in the U.S. containingredients banned in Japan,Canada, and the European Union.

Nationally known Palm Beachdermatologist Kenneth Beer, M.D.,tells Health Radar that certainskincare ingredients should beavoided whenever possible.

These include dioxin, triclosan, and products with color pigments. These can all cause potentialproblems, he says.

Leiba says it is vital to bevigilant and read labels closely.

Another option is to consult theEWGs database o more than80,000 popular cosmetics at www.ewg.org/skindeep.

It rates products rom 010 interms o increasing hazard. Anyproduct rated rom 7 to 10 isconsidered a high hazard.

Stanford University Researchers: BleachReverses Skin Aging

Common household bleach, when greatlydiluted with water, reverses skin damage caused byaging, sunburn, and radiation treatment, according

to findings by scientists at the Stanord UniversitySchool o Medicine.

Doctors have used diluted bleach baths ordecades to treat eczema, a condition that causes skinitchiness, redness, and flaking. However, they didntknow why bleach worked.

Researcher Thomas Leung, M.D., ound that a0.005 percent solution o bleach blocks a humanskin molecule called NF-kB that triggers the bodysinflammatory response.

When the solution was used on mice, their skin

began to look younger. It went rom old and ragileto thicker, with increased cell prolieration, Dr.Leung said. Human tests are planned.

Scan Reveals If Youre Close to aHeart Attack

A new noninvasive imaging technique can spotpatients in imminent danger o a heart attack.Scientists at Scotlands Edinburgh Universityinjected a radioactive tracer called F-sodiumfluoride into patients with heart disease and thengave them MRIs.

Hal had recently suffered a heart attack, and theother hal had angina, which put them at risk o aheart attack.

Among the patients who had recently had anattack, the tracer lit up the areas in the arteries

where blockages had caused heart attacks in 93percent o the cases.

In the angina cases, the scanner spotteddangerous blockages in 45 percent o patients, indicating they were in danger o the plaque

rupturing and causing a heart attack.Scientists believe the new technique will allow

patients in peril to be treated with medicine orsurgery to stop attacks beore they occur and causedamage.

New Test Finds Pancreatic Cancer BeforeIts Too Late

Johns Hopkins researchers have developed asimple blood test that detects pancreatic cancer inits earliest, curable stages.

The disease has a five-year survival rate o lessthan 5 percent due to the act its usually advanced

when discovered. But researchers identified two genes, BNC1 and

ADAMTS1, which together were detectable in 81

percent o blood samples rom people with early-stage pancreatic cancer. The genes were not present in the blood o

people who didnt have the disease. This accuracyrate is higher than in some current cancer tests, such as the widely used PSA screening or prostatecancer.

Hopkins researcher Dr. Nita Ahuja hopes thetest will soon be routinely given to those at highrisk, which include smokers, those whove hadpancreatitis, and people with a amily history opancreatic cancer.
