No-one starts at the top.

We have all had to spend time building valuable experience and developing the skills we still use every day…perhaps making a mistake… but learning important lessons from them.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships are the perfect way to give the next generation of successful Accountancy and Financial Service professionals their first foot on the career ladder.

They are the smartest investment in the future we can make.”

Peter Houillon CEO, Kaplan UK

We build stronger relationships with employers – really listening to what they say to create tailored, one-off solutions which cover everything from strategic planning to sorting the paperwork.

We take lots of time and effort to get to know the Apprentices, making sure they’re ready to work and develop.

We work harder to make sure the employer and Apprentice fit together perfectly, so everyone’s happier.

It’s a smarter way of working which is easily understandable, time-saving and transparent, and ultimately, more rewarding all-round.

The facts... The figures...

So what links them all?

The energy and enthusiasm of Apprentices help:

Increase productivity

Improve competitiveness

Build a committed and competent workforce

Of course, Apprenticeships can also attract government funding, so they have proved to be a cost-effective way of providing companies with highly-skilled and expertly-trained staff.

And if an employer does make a financial investment in their Apprentice, research suggests every penny will be repaid in less than three years.†

Over half a million Apprentices are currently working hard for over 100,000 employers across 200,000 locations*.

That’s companies large and small, covering all sectors of business and all industries.

CHOOSING AN APPRENTICE IS A SMARTER BUSINESS DECISION

92%of employers who employ Apprentices believe they lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce.*

83%rely on their Apprenticeship programmes to provide a pool of skilled and talented workers for their company’s future.*

57%of employers report their Apprentices going on to management positions within their company.***

Over 80%of these employers agree their workplaces are now more productive.**

59%of employers hiring Apprentices believe that taking on an Apprentice is more cost-effective than employing experienced staff.**

Every £1spent on an Apprentice generates £18 for the UK economy.****

‘‘The advantages of taking on Apprentices are that you have motivated young people with the desire to make a difference, that are able to absorb new information and are willing to learn; this helps to improve the department’s delivery and it also contributes to alleviate the workload.”

We understand Professional Apprenticeships; we’ve been delivering them for more than ten years and, in the last five years alone, have trained over 11,000 Accountancy and Financial Services Apprentices.

In fact, our successful Professional Apprentices are living proof of what we do.

In addition, we are the double award-winning Accountancy Training Provider 2014 - PQ Magazine Award for Innovation (for our AAT PassPlus Product), and 2014 AAT Training Provider of the Year.

SMARTER MEANS BETTER SUPPORT AND BRIGHTER CANDIDATES

EXPERIENCE YOU CAN COUNT ON, EXPERTISE YOU CAN TRUST

‘‘As an assessor, you coach and mentor your student and build a great working relationship with them, they learn off you as much as you learn and develop your own skills. Monitoring the students’ progress and setting targets is key.”

A CLEARER PICTURE ON APPRENTICESHIPS

An Apprenticeship is available to anyone living in England, Scotland or Wales*, aged 16 or over and not in full-time education

There is no official start date, it’s a flexible roll-on roll-off programme

And remember, an Apprentice can be either a new recruit or an existing member of staff

The Apprentice needs to be working 30 hours plus per week (16 hours plus in Wales) in a job linked to the Apprenticeship they want to take

Individuals with certain degrees are not eligible

TOGETHER, THESE COVER FOUR KEY AREAS:

Technical: The Apprentice gains technical knowledge and an understanding of the theory behind it. This is the industry- accredited professional qualification element of the Apprenticeship.

Competence: These qualifications cover technical skills based on National Occupational Standards and are very flexible. This means staff in different jobs can take the units that are directly relevant to their specific roles.

Functional skills: In England these cover skills such as Maths, English and ICT which the Apprentice will need for their future career (not applicable to Level 4). These are known as Essential Skills in Wales.

Employer rights and responsibilities (ERR): This forms part of the Apprentice’s induction and introduces the Apprentice to issues such as employee rights, health and safety and equality and diversity.

It’s important to have a clear grasp of who can enjoy the benefits of a Professional Apprenticeship.

The Apprenticeship itself is made up of two main elements: practical on-the-job training provided by the employer (and sometimes the training provider, depending on the subject) and regular additional training delivered off-site by a trainer like us.

* Eligibility criteria may vary

Before recruiting an Apprentice you will need to identify a clearly-defined role for them within your business.

You may be looking to develop an existing member of staff, or you could have spotted a skills gap which an Apprentice could be trained to fill.

Whatever the reason, we will visit you in the workplace, listen carefully to what you’re looking to achieve and help you identify the best training solution for you, your staff and your business.

Kaplan’s support as a training provider

We can help to manage the process from support with funding to helping with recruitment.

We are an approved and long- established training provider – delivering award winning courses and programmes.

So, from support with funding to helping with recruitment, we can help.

We will deliver the assessment and reviews of the Apprenticeship at your place of work and even though we’ll keep you updated with regular feedback, we will leave you free to focus on your core business.

We will also work with employers to determine the most convenient communication method for them. We have a variety of tools to support remote and paperless systems which will enable a variety of bespoke assessment and review techniques.

And because we understand you don’t want staff out of the office at busy times, we also have flexible ways of studying including evening, weekend and live online options.

WHAT HAPPENS AND WHEN FIND. FUND. MANAGE.

Fund. We’ll support you to gain financial support to cover some or all of the cost of professional technically accredited Apprenticeships*. Our team of funding experts are highly experienced in deciphering funding criteria that can help you to gain financial support for training and to keep ahead of the changing funding landscape.

Our funding experts also regularly liaise with local enterprise partnerships, on behalf of employers, to seek out other funding opportunities to ensure that our clients can gain financial support and grants to cover the cost of training and upskill their staff across the UK.

Through our funding experts we can help both your bottom line and your employees to be more efficient saving you time, budget and creating efficiencies within your teams.

ALL YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER IS:

Apprentices will have a formal contract of employment and receive a wage

In England they need to work at least 30 hours per week in a permanent role (16 plus hours in Wales)

There is a national minimum wage for Apprentices (although many employers choose to pay more than this)

Younger Apprentices (aged 16-18 years) will have little, if any, work experience so this should be considered when planning the recruitment process. For example, if you have definite ‘busy periods’, none of your other staff may have time to help the new starter to get acquainted.‘‘The recording of on-site

assessments and feedback gives a far greater opportunity to undertake detailed discussion and to provide more thorough feedback, monitor and track success.”

Andrew McLaren Partner Beever and Struthers

Are you worried that taking on a Professional Apprentice may turn into pile after pile of CVs followed by round after round of interviews?

Relax. One of our most important jobs is to carefully match the Apprentice to your business and your specific needs.

We have access to hundreds of high calibre candidates who are enthusiastic, energetic and eager to both learn and work.

Through our active partnership with schools, you can be sure they will be local to you too.

We will also make sure they are eligible to receive Apprenticeship funding so they will be trained from day one of starting their job.

Meet potential new recruits

Our Talent Academy, held across the UK in July and August every year, provides the perfect opportunity for you to get involved and meet high calibre Professional Apprenticeship candidates within your area.

It’s a great way to find out about the type of person looking to be an Apprentice and also find out more about hiring an Apprentice.

Kaplan Accountancy Scholarship Programme

Every year, we award young, enthusiastic Accountants-in-waiting across the UK the opportunity to gain a place on our Accountancy Scholarship Programme.

Each winner receives full Accountancy training followed by their choice of ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW (ACA) or CIPFA.

You can take on a Kaplan Scholar to work in your accounts department, which means your business could benefit from up to £15,000 of free Accountancy training, plus an outstanding addition to your workforce.

We also have several excellent runners-up who are looking for an Accountancy (AAT) Apprenticeship.

When to recruit

Apprentices can be recruited at any time of year. And we deliver our service all year round.

The key driving force is your business needs.

* England: Free training for those aged 16-18, partial costs covered, plus employer contribution and exam registration fees for those aged 19+. Funding subject to eligibility and government restrictions, terms and conditions apply.

Wales: The Welsh Government fully funds Apprentices of all ages, which means employers do not have to pay anything towards the cost of training subject to government restrictions and funding changes.

Scotland: Free training for 16-19 year olds, partial funding for those aged 20+ plus employer contribution, exam fees and membership fees apply, subject to eligibility and entry level, terms and conditions apply.

Manage.Induct

Apprentices need an in-depth induction to the workplace (something most employers already have in place) as this includes one of the compulsory parts of the Apprenticeship – the Employer Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) section of the programme.

However, the induction should also focus on the Apprentice’s role within the company and their learning objectives, so they get an idea of what to expect and what’s expected of them.

Of course, introducing the Apprentice to their colleagues will help them feel part of the team.

And the induction also gives the Apprentice a chance to start really understanding the structure, values and culture of the company.

Develop. Manage. Feedback and evaluate.

As the training provider, it’s our job to make sure the Apprenticeship runs smoothly and that the Apprentice always knows they are meeting everyone’s expectations.

But, we also encourage employers to collaborate with us and make sure Apprentices have clear work plans and receive ongoing feedback and coaching from their manager.

The more they learn, the better they progress.

What happens next?

When the Professional Apprenticeship is over, that isn’t simply the end of the story.

The majority of Apprentices remain with their employer, repaying the investment of time and money and growing into a productive and committed full time member of staff.

And, of course, the Apprenticeship does not have to mean the end of the individual’s development.

Other further training and learning opportunities are available.

WHAT HAPPENS AND WHEN FIND. FUND. MANAGE.

This level gives the Apprentice the chance to get work-related qualifications that are linked directly to the skills they need for their chosen career. If they wish, they can move on to an Advanced Apprenticeship after completing the Intermediate level.

This level is designed for Apprentices wanting to gain the skills and qualifications needed to become the managers of the future. Employers may ask for up to five GCSEs, grades A*-C or equivalent. Learners may be able to progress onto higher education to take an HND or a Foundation Degree.

This level offers a work-based learning route for those wanting to achieve qualifications at a higher level. Usually, A-levels or an equivalent are required. Higher Apprenticeships are not available in as many career areas as at Levels 2 and 3 but they are expanding. The current Higher Apprenticeships include Accounting and Professional Services.

We are proud to train the UK’s leading Accountancy, Tax and Finance professionals across the UK – and globally.

An Apprenticeship in Accountancy will help any learner get a strong grounding in the profession.

And by gaining a recognised accountancy qualification in the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification, they will be able to make a real difference to your business’ financial performance.

Traineeships are designed for young people who are really keen to start work and show what they can do – but don’t have the traditional qualifications or necessary experience to catch an employer’s eye.

The Traineeship gives them the chance they need to gain that valuable practical experience.

There are no long-term commitments on the employer’s side; only a promise to provide quality experience, mentoring and support for a minimum of two to six weeks.

Traineeships really are a win/win option for everyone: the employer gets an extra pair of hands and the Trainee gets the work experience they’re so determined to acquire.

Taking on a Trainee is actually also a great way to test drive a potential Apprentice.

Traineeship Facts:

Traineeships are unpaid

Trainees can offer extra help during your busiest periods

Kaplan will find suitable Trainees for your business

You’ll be helping young people in your local community gain the skills they need and open up opportunities for their future

Gives the employer the chance to offer an Apprenticeship if the agreement works

Progression is key

Essential employability skills are delivered in the classroom before Trainees are sent for interviews

We support Trainees with their travel and work clothes, where needed (contributions start from £50 for suitable interview/workwear)

TRAINEESHIPSYOU GET EXTRA HELP, A YOUNGSTER GETS EXPERIENCE…

‘‘I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to yourself and staff at Kaplan for your continued support with Demi as a work experience placement at the BRC.

The partnership has worked well and I have found Kaplan to be extremely professional in all aspects of our work together.

I think the support for Demi from Laura before and after the placement has been crucial to the success of Demi gaining interviews and feeling more confident in applying for different job roles.”

Carmel Parr Youth and Schools Project Manager Merseyside, British Red Cross

Alongside our comprehensive Professional Apprenticeships programme, we also offer businesses the option to take on a Trainee via Kaplan’s Traineeship programme.

So, the most obvious first question is, what’s the difference between an Apprentice and a Trainee?

2928

Page 16: Everything an employer needs to know about ... - Kaplan UK · Kaplan completes the following: - Enrolment form - Start date of the training programme - AGE grant paperwork (if required)

This is how it works…Programme Structure

We spend the first two to three weeks of the programme with the Intern, in a Kaplan centre, where we deliver two qualifications: Work Skills Level 1 and the AAT Access Level 1 Award.

At the start of week three, the Intern begins their work placement with you, the employer. This work placement lasts for up to eight weeks with the Intern attending four days per week. The fifth day of each week is spent back at the Kaplan centre where they continue their formal studies.

The work placement must provide a minimum total of 100 hours of work experience, unless you choose to offer the Intern an Apprenticeship opportunity beforehand, in which case we will take you through that process.

Your Responsibility

You are required to undergo a Health and Safety assessment to declare that you have suitable policies and procedures in place

You are responsible for ensuring that the Intern is appropriately supervised and develops basic workplace skills such as turning up on time, keeping a tidy desk, managing a to do list etc

At the end of the placement you are required to offer an exit interview to the Intern

Where possible, if a role or Apprenticeship job becomes available, please offer the Intern the opportunity of an interview

Our Responsibility

We will provide a conducive plan in line with your requirements and the Intern

We will facilitate an ongoing feedback process during the placement with fortnightly visits by our Student Coordinators

We are able to support the Intern with the cost of travel between home and the workplace

We also support them with any additional costs related to placement in terms of equipment, smart clothing, uniform etc

FINANCIAL INTERNSHIPS

Our Financial Internship Programme gives school leavers a chance to develop suitable skills to assist them in finding a position as a Modern Apprentice in Accountancy, or an entry level job in an accountancy environment.

If you’re an employer in this environment, you can test drive an Apprentice through a Financial Internship and give a school leaver valuable experience of working in your sector.

Interns don’t receive a wage as they aren’t employed by you and you are not obliged to offer the Intern a position on commencement of their placement.

A similar programme to Financial Internships is available in Scotland called ‘Get Started in Accounting’.
