Every day, we collect more than 800 units

of whole blood.

Every day, we provide 35 surgeons with tissues for transplantation.

Every day, 10 new volunteers join the bone marrow donor registry.

Every day, 100 new donors visit a Blood Center office or mobile unit.

Every day, we field an average of 12 calls from doctors around the world seeking our expert advice.

And that’s not all. We also provide medical care to thousands of

patients with sickle cell disease, thalassemia, hemophilia and other

blood disorders. And our scientists are doing advanced blood-related

research that’s recognized around the globe.

Altogether, we expect to touch the lives of half a million people this

year. That’s about 1,400 people a day. Every day.

The work of the Blood Center.

It goes on day after day, week after week, month after month.

When people need blood for surgery, trauma care, cancer treatment

or hundreds of other reasons, we’ll be here for them. When they need

a bone marrow match, we’ll be here for them. And when they need

tissue to replace burned skin or a knee tendon, we’ll be here for them.

Every day, 17 mobile units are on-site to serve generous donors.

Every day, we serve 70 hospitals and 21 clinics in Western Washington.

Every day, we deliver over 1,000 lifesaving blood components.

Every day, we receive 8 cord blood donations in Hawaii and Washington.

Every day, our scientists work with the Hutch, UW Medical Center,

and other hospitals to advance blood-related research.

During the past year, the Blood Center has

seen a number of significant milestones and

accomplishments:

• NorthwestTissueServicescelebratedits20th

anniversary and during that time has collected

and distributed bone, skin and other tissue

transplants for over 100,000 patients.

• ThePerfectMatchProgramnowcontainsthe

largestrosterintheU.S.ofdonorsfromvarious

ethnic backgrounds. This roster can be used to

meet the specific needs of frequent transfusion

patients who develop antibodies to blood with

different genetic markers.

• OurUmbilicalCordBloodProgramcontinues

to grow rapidly, allowing us to provide stem

cells as an alterative to traditional bone

marrow transplantation.

• Wecontinuetomakegreatprogressin

developing research tools to study thrombosis

and thrombotic-related diseases such as blood

clots, stroke and the leading cause of death

amongmenandwomenintheU.S.today–

coronary heart disease.

With the continued contributions and generosity

of all those who make the work we do here

possible, the Blood Center will continue to provide

safe blood and tissue services and state-of-the-art

laboratory services related to transfusion and

transplantation.

Onapersonalnote,for35yearsIhavehadthe

privilege to work for one of the finest organiza-

tions in the world and alongside wonderful, creative

people as mentors, business partners, staff and

friends. But my greatest debt of gratitude must go

to the volunteers, blood donors, contributors and

corporate partners who are the true backbone of

thisorganization.Icontinuetobeimpressedand

inspired by the intensity and seriousness of your

commitment to our community and your

constructive support of the Blood Center.

AsIretire,Iamconfidentthatunderthenew

leadership of Dr. James AuBuchon, the Blood

Center will continue to serve the needs in our com-

munity and to be an international leader in blood

and tissue services and research. Thank you for

your friendship and personal support, but most

particularly for your support of the Blood Center.

Pat Hoffman, Administrative Director for Research, works behind the scenes so researchers like John Kulman, Xiaoyun Fu and Jill Johnsen can focus on finding ways to predict and cure thrombosis.

We develop cutting-edge technologies and best practices in blood research and transfusion medicine.

Research into the causes and treatment for blood

disorders has been a vital part of the history of

the Blood Center. The pioneering work by Dr. Art

Thompson and Dr. Richard Counts on hemophilia

recognition as one of the premier blood research

organizations in the world.

This year, we are expanding our efforts in the biol-

ogy of blood clotting by establishing the Center for

ExcellenceinThrombosisResearchatPugetSound

such as coronary heart disease and stroke has helped

attract some of the best research talent in this field.

Researchers like Dr. Jill Johnsen, an expert in

genetics; Dr. John Kulman, a bio-chemist working

with blood thinning agents; and Dr. Xiaoyun Fu,

one of the world’s leading experts in analyzing

the composition of blood proteins, are working

to predict and cure thrombosis.

Today, the Blood Center has ten research

laboratories with dozens of scientists and

researchers studying new therapies for platelet

transfusion and storage, enhanced hemophilia

care, stem cell gene therapy, red cell genomics

testing for more accurate blood typing, ways

to improve clinical performance for transplant

recipients, and many other blood disorders.

Dr. José López, Executive Vice President for Research, leads the Blood Center’s scientific research efforts into the future.

Bob Linz almost died but is now enjoying a rich, full life, thanks to the Blood Center.

15

Bob Linz was diagnosed with a very rare blood

disease called chronic aplastic anemia in the spring

of2007.Heneededweeklytransfusionsbecause

his platelet count would drop so low he could

bleed to death from a simple cut or a bruise that

wouldn’t heal.

Oneday,whilelyinginthehospitalbedduringa

transfusion, Bob had an epiphany that somebody

he’d never met had donated blood so that he could

live. “That got my attention,” says Bob. “That’s

howIgotinvolvedwiththeBloodCenter.”

Bob says that his research uncovered many

facts that most people don’t know about blood

donation. He learned that when you give a pint

of whole blood, it is broken down into three

parts–platelets,redbloodcellsandplasma.

When Bob speaks to other blood donors he always

thanks them because he doesn’t think they really

understand the profound value of their donation.

Bob does; he’s standing there talking to them

because somebody gave blood.

Bob says he feels more alive riding on his motorcycle than anything else he does.

Commitment to the community keeps our alliance with Baxter Healthcare strong.

Baxter Healthcare Corporation receives many requests for financial support,

and the Blood Center has always been a special partner because of our work in

advancing treatments for the bleeding disorders community. “Baxter has support-

ed the Blood Center for many years based on their commitment to hemophilia

patients,”saidPeteO’Malley,aVicePresidentforBaxter’sBioSciencebusiness.

“But it’s also their commitment to the community and the total spectrum of

research and development for blood disorders that makes supporting the Blood

Contributing to research is one more way to help others.WhenSherriVaughnwasdiagnosedwithbloodcanceratage37,sheneeded

daily transfusions before finally succumbing to the disease. During that tragic

experience her husband Leonard was struck by how many volunteers, donors,

doctors and researchers were involved in the work of the Blood Center every day.

Leonard had participated in blood drives, but admits he never fully appreciated

thebigreturnsuchasmallsacrificeofhistimecouldmake.Today,theVaughn

family continues to donate blood regularly but they have also become financial

supporters as well. They feel that a financial gift is simply one more way they

can help the research work of the Blood Center.
