sahidaPotentate’s MessageGreetings to all:

Here we are halfway through autumn and winter feels as though it is fast approaching! I hope this message finds all in the best of possible health, good spirits and ready to tackle snow and seasonal festivities.

It has been a busy few months.... August found Al Shamal members in Butte, Montana to participate in the summer P.N.S.A. The Nobles and Ladies in attendance once again represented our Temple proudly and with outstanding performances by the Clown Unit, TLC, Oriental Band and Motor Corp. Our counterparts to the south (Calgary) also did very well and we were all proud to be Albertan Shriners.

The Ceremonial in Stettler, honouring Noble Ken and Lady Joyce White, at the end of September, was an event in which we can all take a great deal of pride. Under the expert direction of the co-Director Generals, Ill Sir Doug Grant and Ill Sir Jack Watt, the initiation of twelve new Nobles and the celebration of their fezzing, created memories that many have said they will always cherish.

Noble Ken and Lady Joyce’s children and grandchildren were all in attendance to see Noble Ken fezz his son Noble Neil White. The Al Shamal Fort McMurray Shrine Club had two new Shriners participate in the weekend ceremonial and new Nobles Mike and Paul Jaskiw were fezzed by their Ladies, while young lady Lily supported her uncle and father from the sidelines. All our new Nobles are enthusiastic and honourable Shriners whom I know will represent Al Shamal, all the Shriners of Northern Alberta and our philanthropy with dignity and zeal.

My sincerest appreciation goes out to Noble Don Anderson and the Battle River Shrine Club for their hard work and dedication in handling all of the necessary details that went in to making this Shrine event such an outstanding success.

On October 15th, six of the Divan members and their Ladies travelled to Fort McMurray to install their new slate of officers and to conduct a Cold Sands Ceremony for four new Nobles. To all the new nobles ... “Congratulations and Welcome to Al Shamal”.

sahidaThe Al Azhar Ceremonial in Calgary took place on October 22nd and was attended by five of the Divan members and their Ladies. Coincidentally, Al Azhar also initiated twelve new Nobles. I was honoured to assist Ill Sir John Thorpe with the presentation of commemorative pins to the Veterans of Al Azhar who were the honoured guests at the Al Azhar Ceremonial Banquet.

November and December promise to be extremely busy, with Unit and Club Installations as well as seasonal functions. The snow will soon fly and driving conditions will definitely change, so please travel safely as you celebrate the festive season.

This being my last message in the Sahida, on behalf of my Lady Diana and myself, please accept our sincere “Thank You” to not only the current Divan and Appointed Divan, but to all of the Nobles and Ladies who have supported us and your Temple this year. The strength of your encouragement and support has made us extremely proud and honoured to represent Al Shamal – the “Best Temple in Shrinedom”. We wish you and your families joy, health and prosperity through 2011 and throughout the years to follow.

Yours In The Faith,

Ill Sir Armond Nesdoly, Potentate 2011

In Memoriam

Here are our departed Nobles who have made the Great Pilgrimage across searing desert sands to the cool Oasis of Eternal Life. These gentle men were our Friends and Brethren and the void created by their leaving causes an ache in our hearts that will not soon go away.

sahidaRecorder’s RamblingsIllustrious Sir Armond Nesdoly has been trying to encourage Units, Clubs and individual members to try and find some loose change to assist in keeping the Shrine Centre up and running. There have been several donations made by Units and Clubs to assist the cause. As much as that is appreciated more support is needed.

Where have the days gone when we were willing to sit in the malls and sell tickets and make the Shriners visible? There are many opportunities for Units and members who are not Unit or Club members to go into the malls. One project is the Cash Calendars; once permission is granted to sit in the mall the rest is a matter of setting up our displays, putting out our product and selling the calendar.

Oh, I forgot we need someone to organize it and get volunteers. Who would like to do this? We have some very good workers at the Shrine Centre and I’m not suggesting that they do all the volunteering. We have others that are in a position to volunteer. Give it a thought; it will make you feel good that you are helping to make the Centre successful.

Having said that. Casino money is restricted and can only be spent on expenditures approved by AGLC. We are learning that we have not been following all the rules as set out in their Code. On the other hand AGLC has not enforced the code as it should have been applied, so now both the Al Shamal Shrine Units and AGLC are at the drawing board attempting to correct issues from the past.

We will be creating leases for each Unit that has a Casino account that will authorize Al Shamal to use these funds to pay preapproved spending request. Such as: assisting to pay taxes, utilities and administration. A written policy on uniforms purchase and usage will need to be created as well. Purchases made for your Unit will require the invoice to be made out to the name of the Association,

Society, etc. whichever is shown on the Casino Licence even if you pay the expense from your own pocket. You can then be reimbursed from that Casino account. It also must be the original receipt of purchase; Credit Card slips are not acceptable.

There isn’t any need for concern on this issue as it is being worked out between Al Shamal and AGLC. They are not trying to reduce our Casinos, just have us both on the same level playing field.

Once again, many membership dues for 2010 and 2011 are still outstanding. Invoices have been sent out and phone calls have been made to encourage you to pay your dues. If you don’t want to continue in the Shrine, please pay your dues and then take a demit. This will leave you in good standing with the Shriners, which will allow you to return to the organization anytime you wish. If suspended all the dues you missed until you ask for reinstatement will have to be collected.

This will be the last Sahida for this year, so I thank all of you for your support. This year was a huge learning curve for me, but successful. I appreciate your support. Our Administration Manager, Denise Buhay, as all of you know is the life line of the Al Shamal day to day operation. Denise we appreciate all the support you provide for us, thank you. We have had some challenges, but have been able to work them out, which has made the daily operation of the Shrine more efficient.

I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Gary Willis, Recorder

sahidaAl Amira TempleDaughters of the NileAl Amira Temple members have been busy during the last few months. The Official Visit of Supreme Queen, Laura Richardson, and our Ceremonial was held on Sunday, August 21st, 2011 at the Shrine Centre. We welcomed six new princesses, enjoyed performances by the Dancers, Pageantry and Patrol followed by a reception and banquet.

A most successful Shopper’s Delight was held on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 with more than 20 venues to “delight” our avid shoppers.

On November 7th, we observed Daughters of the Nile Founder’s Day and celebrated our 21st birthday. Our Christmas Dinner will be held in Biff’s Lounge on December 5th, 2011. Tickets for this event may be purchased by contacting Past Queen Isabel Gauthier. Christmas gifts for children in the Montreal Shrine Hospital (an unwrapped gift or a Gift certificate from Wal-Mart or Best Buy) may be brought that evening. We are planning a Murder Mystery Night for Saturday, February 18th, 2012. More details will be available at a later date.

We wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year.

Arab PatrolThe Arab Patrol had a very positive and productive year in 2011. It started with some sketches of a possible trailer for the Unit and ended up being a beautiful 16 foot trailer that has made us all extremely proud. It was a difficult decision to realize after all these years of being a “marching band”, the reality is in fact the “years” have caught up to our Unit and that we would have to look at other alternatives to continue the life of the Al Shamal Arab Patrol.

Through the efforts of former Arab Patrol Captain, Jean DESLAURIERS, and the generous contributions of the Pipefitters & Welders Local Union #488, RV Country and the Winfield Paint Shop we now have a beautiful covered trailer. This trailer is also equipped with a hydraulically controlled roof making it very practical when travelling to the various parades. Talking of parades, our schedule started July 1st at Thorhild and ended up August 20th in Bashaw and were extremely well supported by our members. At some of the parades we were also able to have members from the Unit preceding our trailer and proudly carrying our flags.

The Arab Patrol keep ourselves busy by working one (1) or two (2) bingos a month at the Castledowns Bingo Hall. We are continually told by the organizers and the patrons that we are the best charity to work these events. The Arab Patrol are also extremely honoured to have been asked again to perform the Necrology Service at the 2012 Annual General Meeting.

sahidaBruce W. Hogle CMInducted into THE ALBERTA ORDER OF EXCELLENCE as a 2011 member.

Bruce Hogle is a broadcasting pioneer who has served as a passionate and effective advocate for those in need. He has been a tireless driver of positive social change and his work in the media and as a community volunteer has produced lasting benefits for countless people.

Bruce was born in Toronto on February 25, 1929 to Bill and Florence Hogle. He received many gifts from his parents, including Bill’s keen sense of humour and a heart for service. Bruce grew up in Prescott and Sudbury, Ontario where he played hockey and football and developed a keen interest in writing. He decided early on that he would either be a professional athlete or follow his father into journalism. After seeing the superior skills of teammates like Tim Horton and George Armstrong who would go on to the pro ranks, Bruce chose journalism. He found work at the Prescott Journal and the Sudbury Star with his father as editor, developed skills as a sports writer and also gained early radio experience at a local station in Sudbury.

In the late 1940’s, the Hogle Family moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta. Bruce enlisted as a reservist with the South Alberta Regiment and also went to work for his father as a sports editor with the Medicine Hat News. In 1951, Bruce attended officers training at Camp Borden and graduated as a full lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Infantry. He then took on a job in public relations and as a staff writer in the Winnipeg Bureau of the Canadian Press. In time, forces drew Bruce back to Alberta, not the least of which was a young Medicine Hatter named Gail Manarey who Bruce had met through army buddies.

The couple married in 1954 and settled in Medicine Hat where Bruce returned to the local paper as assistant editor. After two years, they moved to B.C. for Bruce’s first post as Editor with the Trail Daily Times. In the early 1960’s the family relocated to Regina where Bruce was News Director for CKRM radio.

In 1965, Bruce’s life changed dramatically. His father passed away after moving to Edmonton to set up the newsroom for Sunwapta Broadcasting’s new television studio. Bruce was asked to step in at CFRN TV and complete his father’s work as Manager of News, Sports and Public Affairs. Bruce kept up a busy schedule at the station as well as at home where he and Gail worked to raise their three boys: Bill, Randy and Steve.

Throughout his 30- year career with Sunwapta, Bruce served as a highly respected media presence across central and northern Alberta. While Bruce covered any story that might impact the lives of his fellow Albertans, he was particularly drawn to fighting injustice and always made time for the plight of society’s underdogs. He also became sensitive to the needs of young people facing challenges, a mindset both he and Gail developed as they helped their son Randy triumph over blindness.

In 1967, he produced a powerful documentary, What About the Victim, which detailed issues faced by victims of crime. The piece prompted the creation of the Alberta Crimes Compensation Board, the first of its kind in Canada. Perhaps one of Bruce’s most memorable and effective efforts was the 1981 launch of Wednesday’s Child, a regular feature to find families for difficult-to-adopt children with physical, mental and emotional handicaps.

Bruce Hogle also pioneered change as a supporter of women in broadcasting and was instrumental in opening the door at CFRN TV for Western Canada’s first female news anchor. His considerable contributions to the industry have been recognized with many awards and honors, including induction into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

One of his main focuses has been the Good Neighbour Fund which he established in 1993 during his tenure as head of Community and Corporate Services for CFRN TV. This unique organization acts as a charity of last resort for people in need of a helping hand. Using his close and longstanding association with the Al Shamal Shriners of Northern Alberta, Bruce created Operation Red Coat/Red Fez to unite Shriners with the RCMP in efforts to serve handicapped children living in isolated areas of the province.

His community work has earned him many prestigious honours, including membership in the Order of Canada and recognition as one of the “100 Edmontonians of the Century.” Bruce has humbly accepted each award he’s been offered on behalf of the dedicated teams of volunteers with which he works.

Congratulations Ill. Sir from all the Nobility.

Premier, Alison Redford, Ill. Sir Bruce Hogle, Lieutenant Governor, Donald S. Ethell

sahidaKen & Joyce WhiteFollowing is the tribute paid to Noble Ken and Lady Joyce White at the ceremonial in Stettler on Saturday, October 1st 2011 as presented by Noble Jim Price.

Illustrious Sir, Illustrious Sirs, nobles, ladies, guests and more especially Ken and Joyce White, their family and friends. This ceremonial is being held to honour Ken and Joyce for their countless years of service and dedication to not only the shrine but also the Masonic order and all of its concordant bodies. Both Ken and Joyce through their dedication and service influenced their sons Perry, Neil and Glenn to follow in the footsteps of their mentor and father. Also, today we welcomed Neil as the third son to enter the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Their daughter Nancy due to medical reasons could not be with us tonight.

Kenneth Edwin White was born in Edmonton on May 23rd, 1932 and told me that he will make it to eighty next year, elaborating that some of his friends have arrived at that milestone first. Talking about friends, many have told me that Ken makes friends for life. They all spoke of his philosophy; “do it right or don’t do it at all.” His son Neil said that should read, “do it my way or don’t do it at all”.

A close confidant of Ken told me that there is a practical joker side to Ken that goes right back to his early days in the sea cadets. He was not above sending the young Cadets searching for green and red oil for the port and starboard lights. Or at work, he was known to substitute a gasket for the slice of bologna in a co-workers sandwich or painstakingly remove a soup label from a can and place it on a can of dog food. After eating the soup, this co-worker worried the rest of the day that his wife may have bought a whole case of that horrible soup.

His son said “my dad gives respect and commands respect in return”. Then he went on to say that once Ken chased a nephew, Murray, all around the farm yard while he was riding on a kid’s tricycle. Is this an indication Ken and Joyce also like to party?

Ken’s father and his family lived in the Prince of Wales Armoires in Edmonton after the Second World War. It is said that Ken, inquisitive as he was, found more secret passages in the armoires than Harry Potter found at Hogwarts. This certainly led to his inquisitive nature in the Masonic orders.

For me to elaborate on all the dedication, accomplishments and honours Ken has received from the Masonic lodge and concordant bodies would take the best part of an hour. Ken from his initiation into masonry on April 1st, 1957, has been significantly involved in a leadership role with all the concordant bodies, achieving two of their most cherished honours. In 2006, the Knights Templar College of

Honours made him Knight Commander of the Temple wherein there are only 36 members in Canada and just this year on April 9th the Red Cross of Constantine Knighted him Knight Commander of Constantine, an honour bestowed on only 12 individuals in Canada at any one time.

The Shrine inherited a dedicated member on June 7th, 1975 when Ken joined Al Azhar Temple. He became president of the Directors Staff in 1981, a founding member of Al Shamal in 1985 and has served as Chaplin and Director General many times over. The time, effort and involvement of Ken in the Shrine has been ever so appreciated as displayed by this evenings celebration.

The only two Masonic related concordant organizations that Ken has not risen to were possibly beyond his control. He never reached the position of Honoured Queen of either Job’s Daughters or Daughters of the Nile.

Joyce, we all know how you have been an inspirational supporter of Ken and all of your children. Your involvement as Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star, the Shrine Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Al Amira Temple, Daughters of the Nile is exemplified by the countless hours you have put in; and also your endless involvement with the Robin Hood Association for the handicapped. The support you, Ken and your sons and their families provide to your daughter, Nancy, displays the bond and closeness your whole family have.

They told me that when it was decided Nancy had been without a dog for quite a while, Piper was adopted and brought home for her. While Nancy was to be the principal benefactor of this move they said that when Piper arrived she looked at Ken and he looked at her and it was love at first sight.

What an honour to you both, Ken and Joyce, to see your sons follow their father’s footsteps through the Masonic Lodge, concordant bodies and the Shrine. Your sons said that Ken was always there to help as long as he wasn’t on his way to one of those seventeen meetings.

Did you know that there is a well kept family secret? Ken fainted on their wedding day, 10th August 1957. The fact that he fainted isn’t so much the secret as to the reason why. For a brief moment, it is their belief that Ken thought he had forgotten and was missing a Masonic function.

Enough being said, I would like to call Ken and Joyce to come forward and introduce their family and guests. Ladies and Gentlemen let’s give a Shrine welcome to Ken and Joyce White.

Al Shamal Shriners

Valentine Auction Saturday, February 11, 2012

The annual Al Shamal Valentine Auction will be soon upon us. As with each year, there is a need for both “live” and “silent” auction items and we will be asking each member for donations.

Again this year, we are asking the members for their assistance.

Brainstorming: As with any organization, a few members get together and come up with “great ideas”. However, not everyone agrees with these ideas. To address this, we are asking our members to identify one item (live or silent) that they think would be a huge attraction (the constraints are that it must not be illegal or immoral).

By taking this exercise to the members, we hope to take advantage of the brainstorming power of the members.

Please call or email your ideas to Ian Skogstad (780.459.4641) or [email protected]. We look forward to your reply.

sahidaPonoka Fire TruckThe Ponoka Fire Truck Unit did several parades this year, during which we enjoyed a lot of good fellowship. Our ladies, in their yellow jackets could be spotted in the crowd, thus we were represented in the parade as well as a spectator. We have a new piece of equipment as part of our Unit which is driven by an old Shriner, who also made all the parades and gave out over 400 stuffed animals during the various parades.

Everyone enjoyed the dinner meeting in Ponoka on September 28th at which Ill. Sir Arnold Nesdoly and the First Lady attended. Also present were Oriental Guide, Noble James Butlin and Treasurer, Noble Francis Dryden.

Ladies Auxiliary to the Shrine HospitalsCan not believe it is almost the end of November. Time flies when you are having fun ! Fun we have had. Our Ladies annual Luncheon, Craft Sale and Cookie walk was a great success. A big thank you goes out to those who organized the event and to those who took part in helping to make it so! Wow !!. Who knew we had such good bakers. The cookies just get better and better.

Kudos to our ladies who knit such wonderful items and also to our crafty ladies who keep coming up all year round with new ideas! Good work ladies!

The next meeting of the evening group will be on Dec 6th at 7 pm. This is our Wine and Cheese event with a Chinese auction. We always have a good laugh and some tough bartering takes place.

The afternoon group will again meet at Colleen Hiron’s home for our annual Christmas tea. Thanks again, Colleen for opening up your home to us. This will be at 1 pm on December 7th.

The last auxiliary meeting of the year will be on December 14th at 1:30 pm at the Shrine Centre. See you all there for the election of officers.

Merry Christmas to all. Have a great one!

sahidaPull-tabs... ...A New Partnership!

I’m pleased to announce that as of September we have a new supporter of our pull-tabs initiative. Strathcona Legion #150 (Edmonton) is now saving pull-tabs to help us raise funds in support of our Shrine.

Recently, I met with Ron Bell, the legion’s president, to finalize arrangements. He confirmed that in the future, he and his comrades will collect pull-tabs on our behalf. This is exciting news, indeed, because as we all know, it takes a lot of tabs to equal a dollar. To be exact, it takes about 1000 tabs to equal a pound, and it takes slightly more than two pounds to earn a dollar, at current recycle prices.

Do we still need your help? Oh yes. In fact, in terms of the needs of our Shrine, we need your help more than ever. Please take a moment to pull those tabs and save them for us. When you are ready to donate, just drop them off at our Shrine or contact me, Noble Mahlon Weir, and I’ll pick them up.

I have a new email address: [email protected]. Or call me at 780-434-6090.

Thank you for your help.

Valentine Dinner& Auction

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2012AL SHAMAL SHRINE CENTRE

It is my distinct honour and pleasure to be the Chairman for the upcoming 2012 Valentine’s Auction. I think everyone involved with Al Shamal has either heard of or talked about what a great facility we have at our Temple and that we need to make better use of the building. Well, the 2012 Valentine’s Auction Committee have listened and as a result we are hosting the 2012 auction at the Shrine Centre! Now it is up to every Noble to do his part to make this a successful fundraiser!

You might say “Well how can I help”? My response to this question is quite simple. It is called PARTICIPACTION, which can be achieved by obtaining articles for the auction, remembering this is not a garage sale; volunteering to help on the committee; and most important to ensure we have a good attendance at the auction by inviting guests to attend.

Ticket prices for the Auction will remain the same as in past and that is at $100 each or a table of 8 for $800. However, if tables are purchased prior to 31 December 2011, they will be $700, which is a substantial savings and we all know how this can help when going to a fundraising auction! Please remember the success of any fundraiser is directly related to how many people become involved either through volunteering or in their attendance.

Should you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate in contacting me. I can be reached most days in person at the Shrine Centre or at the below listed phone numbers.

Back in 1872, when the Shriners fraternity was established, it made perfect sense to emphasize the middle-Eastern motif of the organization by naming it the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.

While the fraternity is still based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, neither that tongue-twisting formal name – nor even the more commonly-used name of Shriners of North America – fit the organization today.

Today, there are active members of the fraternity located around the world, and an increasing effort to reach and recruit new members on an international scale. It is important they be acknowledged in the name of the organization.

Consequently, at the 2010 Imperial Session in Toronto a resolution was passed to officially replace the corporate name, The Imperial Council of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America. The resolution also stated that Shriners International should replace the name or any abbreviated versions of it (such as Shriners of North America). Nobles are encouraged to use Shriners International when referring to the fraternity, both in speech and in any temple publications they produce.

Also, just as a reminder, at the 2002 Imperial Session, a proposal to replace the word ‘temple’ with the word ‘Shriners,’ when the term is used as a proper name for a group of nobles was

passed. For example, Mecca Temple is now Mecca Shriners. The word temple can still be used to designate general groups of Shriners, or the building where Shriners often gather. For example, there are now 193 temples located in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Republic of Panama and The Philippines, with another temple in Germany currently under dispensation. There are also affiliated clubs located around the world.

Whether we are attracting interest and members globally or locally, we want to be sure we make it as easy as possible for potential Shriners to understand who we are and what we do. Therefore, it was also decided that when speaking to or providing materials for non-Shriners, it is fine to refer to a temple with a secondary references of ‘chapter’, which is also a clear indication that we are a fraternity.

All of these changes are part of an overarching effort to increase membership by using terms people everywhere can understand, accept and respond to in a positive way. Additional efforts include the website beashrinernow.com, which is specifically for potential new members.

The future of the fraternity depends on increasing membership. While these efforts are important, it is equally critical for every Shriner to be willing to share his interest in and commitment to the fraternity with those around him.
