FRIDAY, APRIL 27AUTISM FUNDRAISER5:30pm at Lake Goodwin Community Club, 17323 42nd Ave NW, Stanwood. Hundreds of children are no longer trapped by Autism because of Respen-A (a homeopathic treatment). They are speak-ing, after not having a voice. They seek hugs, wear clothing & crave affection where before they couldn’t stand touch. They enjoy crowded parks & engage with other children, instead of living a life of solitude as they couldn’t handle stimulation. They are excelling & enjoy school, a place that used to cause severe frustration & epi-sodes of screaming. They are no longer settling for a life of Autism, but instead enjoying a life of greatness & a life they were meant to live. Come help us make Respen-A, a reality for not only hundreds, but thousands of children/ adults by making it an over the counter option. 100% of the donations go towards helping as many chil-dren as possible have access to Respen-A. 5:30-7:30pm is the silent auction. 6:00-7:00pm dinner and live music. 7:45-live auction, wine and dessert. End with live music to dance the night away till 10pm. PRESALE AS LIMITED SPACE: 120 people/ 15 tables, $15 per person (dinner included) OR $100 per table (that sits 8 people for dinner). DOOR ADMISSION: $10 per person (no dinner included. This is a great excuse to have a fun night for an amazing cause, but please leave the kids at home as this event is 21 and over.

QUOTES BY STEVEN WRIGHT...

Right now I’m having amnesia and deja vu at

the same time. I think I’ve forgot-ten this before.

Yesterday I parked my car in a tow-away zone

when I came back the entire

area was missing.

When I get real bored, I like to

drive downtown and get a great parking spot,

then sit in my car and count how

many people ask me if I’m leaving.

spring festival. The earliest May

Day celebra-tions appeared with the festival

Walpurgis Night celebrations of the Germanic countries. In

some parts of the United States,

May baskets are made. These are

small baskets usually filled with flowers or treats and left at some-one’s doorstep. The giver rings

literally means May 5th in

Spanish. This day, which is

often erroneously confused with

Mexican Indepen-dence, commem-orates the victory

of the Mexican army against French forces

during the Battle of Puebla on this day in 1862. To-

day, it is not only seen as a source of pride for both

Mexicans and Mexican-Ameri-cans, but also as an excuse to in-

TREES by Bryce Ekrem

I sit on this bus as colors whiz by.I know that this peace is a lie.

Outside this oasis of brick and organizationThere sits a place of destruction and agitation

Where there are no trees growingWhere there are no lawns worth mowing.

Why does the willow weep? Why do the limbs of the oak leap?

How sad is it when the gloom is overpowering?Instead, shouldn’t 100 green, fragrant trees be towering?

Where there are no trees, no definite colors, just gray,Couldn’t there be blossoming trees adding color in May?

Why can’t we remember that trees add color and lifeWhen we savagely dismember forests with a knife.

If we continue on this path then we will evokeSuch horror and gloom that we will proceed to stoke.

In this fright and despair,I surely hope we may fare.

The Stanwood Area Histor-ical Society

asks, “Did You Know?”

Excerpts taken from the

“Stanwood Story”, written

for theStanwood News

by Alice Essex.

Hats were off to the home town when the state examiner came in 1913 and praised the excellent financial condition and commend-able handling of the sewer and paving program. Even a nearby newspaper cheered the Stanwood Achievement, on practically a cash basis, which gave street, sewer and water improvements total-ing $25,000 to property owners. The article read in part:

“While bonds were provided for the entire improvement project, Stanwood has set a pace for other towns by being ready to pay cash and avoid the bond issue. This is a record no other town in the state had equaled so far. The secret of the success and steady growth of Stanwood is due to the united efforts of her citizens, who appreciate the off-repeated proverb— “United we stand, divided we fall’.”

Incidentally, there were at that time, 110 miles of logging railroads in Snohomish County, operated by 33 companies and many other companies were operating without rail facilities. Assessed value of the roads was $242,370. There were also many more miles of com-mon carriers in the county, whose principal traffic was logs, and the Stilly held the record for handling more timber during the past 30 years than any other river of its size in the northwest.

So, it was that Stanwood on the Stilly moved forward, not only out of the mud, but out of the red, as well. The motion picture era, which had come to the American scene, made its debut in Stanwood in September 1911 at the Palace Photo Play, located in the McKean Building on Main Street. W. H. Conners, who operated the Palace Hotel, sponsored the venture, which on opening night featured a western cowboy thriller and an extravaganza entitled “Ancient Ro-man Battles”. It was advertised as “good for youngsters” and admis-sion was 10 cents. Performances were scheduled for Tuesday, Thurs-day, Saturday and Sunday nights, plus a Sunday matinee…with a change of program for each showing.

The Palace Photo Play must have prospered, for in March 1912, Conners took a five-year lease on the new Folly Theater, built by George Ketchum on his property at the corner of Market and Main Streets. The building is now occupied by Preview Properties Real Estate, “The new theater”, said the Tidings, “is well-lighted and ven-tilated, modern in every way and has a handsome, painted curtain.” A lavish, admission-free opening attraction launched the new Fol-ly to an audience of 500 people. Vaudeville shows were included three times a week. Meantime the former Palace Photo Play had been taken over by Charles McKean, and was renamed the Star The-ater, with Will Walker as a machine operator. Thus, in less than nine months, Stanwood acquired two motion picture theaters. This, how-ever, didn’t hinder billing of Lyceum Circuit attractions and other travelling stage shows, which continued to play here for some time.

A miscellany of other events paraded through the years 1911-1912, and are listed here briefly:

Summer 1911—A cow testing association was organized with 501 cows on test. Members were J. P. Anderson, N. P. Leque, A. W. Binnall, Hans Myron and Ole Fjarlie. Silvana’s third annual athletic meet was held on the main street before an audience of 200 spectators, and fire destroyed the Cedarhome Lumber Company.

about it.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM YOUR CAT Hey, owner. This is your cat. There appears to be a little confusion as to just exactly who’s in charge here. I know, I know. You pay the electric bill, pay the insurance (whatever that is), and you buy all the food. That does not make you king of my castle. I’m afraid I’m going to have to go over the ground rules one more time if I’m going to allow you to stay here. I think we can both agree that I am pretty low maintenance. Heck, I sleep 20 hours a day, so the least you can do during the other four is drop what you’re doing and pay full attention to me – starting with my meals. I have to say a monotonous diet of Meow Mix day after day is not exactly my idea of haute cuisine. And what’s with the dry food pellets? Do I look like a rabbit? Please have your chef start preparing more interesting entrées for me. Might I suggest steak tartare or perhaps Lobster Newburg? While we’re on the subject of dining preferences, need I remind you that the toilet is mine? Its primary function, we both know, is as the receptacle for my drinking water. I’m willing to let you share, but for God’s sake please make sure little Princess Sarah remembers to flush after she tinkles. It’s gross. You don’t see me taking a pee in her sippy cup, do you? There also appears to be some confusion about sleeping quarters. The following locations belong to me: the living room couch, the family room recliner, every square inch of the master bed, any car-peted surface, and the dining room window ledge. In the spirit of compromise, I’m willing to let you share the window ledge – if you ask nicely and come bearing catnip. Now a word about petting me. I am willing to let you pet me if you feel compelled to do so. I can put up with your scratching me under the chin and behind my ears, or even stroking my belly on occasion. But for the umpteenth time, please leave my paws alone. I’m still ticked at you for de-clawing me in 2012. By the way, not that I’m complaining, but would it kill you to give me a few cat treats now and then? After all, who do you think is responsible for killing all the spiders and bugs that sneak into the house? Well, it sure as heck ain’t Fido over there. He’s way too busy licking his genitals to worry about patrolling this place for insect infestation. Speaking of Fido, ever since you brought home that tail-wagging people pleaser, I barely get 16 hours of sleep anymore. What were you thinking? He’s driving me nuts, always trying to play with me or sniff my butt. If he sees a bird, he goes apoplectic, barking at the top of his lungs like we’re all under attack. But back to my original point. I’m just asking you to be more con-siderate of my needs as the master of this house. I don’t appreciate having to wait to be fed until you feel like rolling out of bed each morning. And when you start reading a book, I consider that an open invitation for me to lie down on top of it. By now I would have hoped we’ve established that my comfort is more important than your finding out what happens next in your latest Dan Brown novel. And one other pet peeve: Enough with turning off the laser point-er right as I try to swipe at it. It was not funny the first time. It’s not funny the 247th time. But just to show you I have no hard feelings, I went out and brought you a special gift. I’m pretty sure it’s a dead mouse. But it might be a mole. Kind of hard to tell since I bit off its head. I found the perfect place for it: your pillow. No need to thank me. - Tuxedo the cat.

BUTTERED POPCORN MOVIE REVIEWS By Scott SlaterIt’s been a slow couple of months at the theater but the spring movie releases promises to change that. Between now and July new films will hit the big screen

At the plate is A Quiet PlaceThe movie stars Emily Blunt who you may remember from The Girl On The Train and Sicario and her real-life husband, John Krasins-ki. The film revolves around a family trying to hide from monsters that can’t see but have excellent hearing. And what happens to a victim once they’re caught is a mystery. True to the title there isn’t much dialog for the family communicates by sign to keep from being discovered. Blunt is a good actor so why she did this film is a real head-scratcher. A Quiet Place is fast-paced but goofy and the monsters look like melting candles dipped in Jell-O but it is entertaining. The movie opened to big ticket sales and fairly good reviews which for the life of me I can’t explain.

Game NightJason Bateman, Rachel McAdams and Kyle Chandler hit the big screen in this sometimes gory and sometimes funny film. A group of friends meet to play a murder mystery game complete with criminals and federal agents. Things quickly get out of hand and the group find themselves in the real deal-or maybe not. Movie goers will wonder if they are getting played for Bozos and that’s exactly what the producers wanted. The movie is action-packed and worth the time.

I Can Only ImagineThis may be one of the first films created around song by the group MercyMe. One would think this movie has a specific audi-ence because MercyMe is a Christian rock band but that would be a wrong assumption. Dennis Quaid pulls off an outstanding per-formance as a nasty father who eventually changes his destructive ways through the power to forgive. I Can Only Imagine is an inspi-rational movie that will appeal to everyone.

2018 marks the 50th year since Stanley Kubrick’s sensational mov-ie 2001 A Space Odyssey. Apparently a 70mm negative of the movie was discovered so it will return May 8th in select theaters so if you find it see it on the big screen. Then, like the rest of us, you will spend the next 25 years trying to figure it out.

STANWOOD CAMANO ARTS FESTIVALS

We are very excited about a new endeavor and organization com-ing to Stanwood this year. The organization is called “The Stanwood Camano Arts Festivals”. If you have been to some of the big arts festivals in our state, such as Anacortes, this will be a huge benefit for our community and even more so, in the years to come. We’ve had Art By the Bay the last 2 years which was put on by the Stan-wood Camano Arts Guild and the festival was led by Sally Pray, who did an outstanding job. According to the Stanwood Camano Arts Guild Board, they do not want to keep making the festival bigger. This is where we all came in. We would love to see a huge festival in our community that supports the arts, from not just Stanwood and Camano, but all over. The Stanwood Camano Arts Festivals has the right tax status that now makes it possible to give the proceeds back to the community in various areas. THIS IS HUGE!!! For one ex-ample, having the train station in our town needs to be utilized for bringing in tourism. The committee’s Marketing Director, Karla Kay Benjamin, has successfully established a repour with AMTRAK for these types of events. This is just one of many things this organiza-tion is working on and with, to bring us a successful Festival for our community.

The first event is planned to be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th of July this year, at the east end of Stanwood. It is call the “Summer Arts Jam”. Ms. Pray and her committee have already gotten the ball rolling to make this a big success for our community. There will also be other small festivals throughout the year the Stanwood Camano Arts Festivals group will hold. Art By the Bay will continue as well, but a smaller venue for their members. As will the popular Mother’s Day Studio Tour put on by the Camano Arts Association. All events in our area help support our community and create growth and help our businesses.

Please help support this first annual Stanwood Camano Arts Fes-tival event, “Summer Arts Jam”. Either as an artist participating in the event, or a business helping to sponsor. There will be live music, roaming street performers, a local craft beer garden and wine gar-den. Root beer float garden for the little ones. Also, a Kids Discover Art area, face painting, food booths, and a grape stomping contest with our very own Mayor Kelley. And much more. To see how you can help, please contact Sally Pray at [email protected], and to read more about this event and meet the dedicated committee members, who are all volunteer’s, go to http://SCAFS.info

We give our full support to making this event an annual attraction in Stanwood. Leonard Kelley, Mayor of Stanwood, Renae Kettler, Pres-ident of the Stanwood Chamber and RE/MAX Business owner, John Russell, Treasurer of the Stanwood Chamber and UPS Store owner, President of Port Susan’s Farmer’s Market, and City’s Economic De-velopment Advisory Committee member, Jeff Ericson, Owner of Camano Island Coffee Roasters, Camano Island Marketplace and Camano Commons, John Ebner, Local resident, participating artist and creator of the first poster for Summer Art Jam

Following is a list of activities we will be partici-pating in. To reserve a place at the May 12th fundraiser, held at Port Susan Middle School, call Renee Herigstad at (360)629-1300 ext. 5054. COMMUNITY HERO: CREATING CONNECTIONSIN PARADISELed by an inspiring gardener, residents convert their community into a web of wildlife havens. To set an example, Val Schroeder re-placed her own lawn with layers of native vegetation that nurture wildlife year-round. SEPARATED BY A NARROW CHANNEL from the Washington coast, 60 miles north of Seattle, Camano Island is a wildlife lover’s paradise. Its coniferous forests, secluded beaches and fertile estuary attract dozens of species, including bald eagles, river otters, coho salmon, springtime migratory songbirds and waterfowl during winter. The 40-square-mile island also provides year-round habitat for some 15,000 human residents. “Most peo-ple are drawn to Camano for its natural beauty,” says Val Schroeder, who moved here with her husband in 1994. Soon after, however, she started to see signs that logging and other development were altering the island’s bucolic character. “Rather than just sitting home and getting upset,” the high school English teacher recalls, “I decided to get out and do something.” That something was to launch an ambitious effort to make Camano Island an early par-ticipant in the National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat™ program. Started in 1997, the program provides commu-nity leaders with guidelines for turning their cities, towns or coun-ties into networks of wildlife-friendly properties, both private and public (including parks, school grounds, businesses and places of worship). To date, the Federation has certified more than 100 com-munities nationwide. Teaming up with other volunteers, Schroeder began a local group to help Camano attain certification. “It seemed like a perfect fit for this area,” she says. To set an example, Schro-eder tore out her own lawn and other nonnative plants, replacing them with native ground cover, berry-producing shrubs and other vegetation that provide food and cover for wildlife. “We built a gar-den that serves wildlife all year,” she says. NWF rewarded her work by designating the 1-acre property a Certified Wildlife Habitat®. By 2005, more than 500 other island landowners had followed Schro-eder’s lead, and Camano became the nation’s 10th NWF certified community. “Val is a mentor and inspiration not only to her neigh-bors but also to other community leaders in the region,” says Feder-ation Senior Education Manager Courtney Sullivan. Washington is now home to 15 certified communities. For her efforts, the Federa-tion named Schroeder its Volunteer of the Year in 2005, and coun-ty conservation officials honored her with a lifetime achievement award in 2016. “Residents here have really embraced this program,” says Tom Eisenberg, president of Friends of Camano Island Parks and an avid birder who has recorded 120 avian species on his own certified property. Today, more than 900 Camano properties have qualified for certification, creating a network of more NWF habitats per square mile than any other certified community in Washington. “This has been a positive way to get people thinking about smart growth,” Schroeder says. “It gives me hope for the future of the is-land.” – Mark Wexler is editor-at-large / Gardening Apr 01, 2018

COMMUNITY MEALS AT THE CENTEROne of the best kept secrets on Camano Island may be the amazing lunches that we offer at the Camano Center on Monday, Wednes-day and Friday. Many people don’t know that these lunches are open to the general public and are not just for seniors or Cama-no Center members. The suggested donation for seniors over 60 is $5 and for those under 60 the suggested donation is $6. It’s a great ways to get out of the house and socialize, get to know your neighbors and maybe even make some new friends. The meals are wholesome home cooked meals and usually are more like a supper meal than a luncheon meal. Many people eat their big meal of the day here and have a light meal for dinner. If you don’t really like to cook as much as you used to it is a great way to save time on cook-ing and clean-up. Very often many of our guests take a container of food home with them and don’t even have to prepare food the rest of the day. The meals vary from homemade sausage lasagna to beef stroganoff and roast turkey. Meals include an entrée, very often a salad, a starch, a vegetable and bread. Also included is a beverage and a homemade dessert. We also have a theme dinner once a month. For this meal we ask people to call and reserve their space. Otherwise please arrive between 11:30 and 11-45, lunch is served promptly at noon. We hope to see you here soon.

THE ART OF BEER, BRATS, BIZ & MOREis now accepting Vendor Registration. Booth space is FREE for all Chamber Members ($35 for Non-Chamber Members). The event will be on June 2nd from 11-4 at Freedom Park. Live Music, Beer Garden, Brats, and networking with businesses! Email [email protected] or find the event on DiscoverStan-woodCamano.com for easy registration!

CAMANO ISLAND FOOD BANKFree to all those in the community in need...Fruits, Vegetables, Canned & Baked Goods, etc. Open Mondays 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at 867 S. West Camano Drive, Camano Island. 360-387-7202. We are a Food Lifeline (Feeding America) Agency.

CASA BAKE AND PLANT SALE – ITEMS NEEDEDCASA’s annual Bake and Plant sale will be held May 12. Can you help by providing plants or baked goods? It’s time to divide and transplant your plants for our Plant Sale. If your houseplants need dividing we want them also. If you need pots for your plants, we have quite a few. Ask your neighbors for some of their plants. Please label your donated plants. THE EASY ISLAND?Camano Island’s chamber of commerce recently nicknamed Camano Island as “The Easy Island”, yet...

It is NOT easy to go 50mph anywhere where the speed limit is posted at 50mph.

It is NOT easy to find that prize Easter egg at the South Camano Grange Easter Egg Hunt.

It is NOT easy to launch a boat at Maple Grove Boat Launch.

It is NOT easy to drive to the courthouse to argue a traffic ticket.

It is NOT easy to pronounce Utsalady or O-Zi-Ya.

It is NOT easy to explain why a residential area on the island is spelled backwards.

It is NOT easy to choose the best-tasting chowder or chili from the Chili-Chowder Cookoff.

It is NOT easy to get home on Camano Island without first stopping at one of four traffic lights.

It is NOT easy to hail a cab.

It is NOT easy trick-or-treating Halloween night on Cross Island Road.

It is NOT easy cleaning the beaches the day after the 4th of July.

It is NOT easy finding a Great Northwest Glass Quest “clue ball.”

It is NOT easy for an artist to participate in the Studio Tour one week-end AND do it all again the next weekend.

It is NOT easy to walk to school once you enter the 9th grade.

It is NOT easy to just buy ONE pie at the Ladies Aid Bake Sale.

But it IS easy to love Camano Island.

ROBOT APOCALYPSE!

So we got a guy, a tech exec, who’s running for President already on a platform to pay everyone $1000 a month guaranteed income. He’s worried about artificial intelligence taking away one third of American jobs by the year 2030. For you math challenged, that’s only a dozen years away. For you who won’t be retiring before then, maybe you got yourself a candidate.

Oh sure, we got bigger fish to fry than widespread unemployment unleashed by soulless robots and their soulless corporate employ-ers. We got coal mining jobs to bring back and manufacturing jobs to entice home to our shores. We got walls to build on the border and regulations to get off our backs. There’s Planned Parenthood to defund and gun rights to protect. 33% unemployment? Maybe not high on most folks’ agenda. Maybe not all that important.

And of course there’s the irksome idea for a lot of us that if welfare seems like a commie plot or food stamps seem like a way to keep minorities happy and voting Democratic, well sir, this scheme to give paychecks to non-workers so they don’t riot in the streets of every city in America should make more than a few buy extra AR-15’s and bunkers stacked with ammo. Assuming the robots will sell us humanoids artillery.

Me, I like the idea of free paychecks. Half the jobs I worked in my lifetime were dead end mindless soul-sucking work better done by robots anyway. Good riddance!! Just give me my wages and let me get on with something life-affirming. Daytime TV with Oprah. Pur-chasing more Lottery tickets. Tithing to the Church of the Profane. Buying better beer. Hell, who knows, I might even get up every morning and follow my dream once I have some time to figure out what my dream is.

All I know is, I don’t want a bunch of lay-about poverty stricken pissed off yahoos under my window hollering about the right to eat. Give them money for cake! That’s all I’m saying. Pacify the mob. Sure don’t want the drone cops taking these matters into their own digital hands.

Astronomy in the night sky over

Camano byWilliam Maxwell

Images taken from his observa-tory on Camano can be found atwww.astrobin.

com/users/WilliamM/

I thought I saw a star the other night through the clouds, but it wasonly an airplane. Time for more armchair astronomy!

Change. We often think of the heavens as changeless, but even the most common markers we experience are in a constant state of change. Take a day: Its getting longer. Don’t get too excited over-achievers, it only adds up to a fraction of a second over a lifetime, but wind back the clock and the evidence points to Earth days be-ing as short as 14 hours. The Earth is slowing because the Moon is pulling on it and because of this interaction our Moon is slowly slipping away. Again, wind back the clock into the deep past and at one time the Moon could have been 4x closer to us than it is today. Imagine a full Moon with that perspective.

Well, certainly the stars must be steadfast! No, they too are in con-stant motion as our entire galaxy slowly rotates. Its so slow that we don’t notice it, but star charts for the world’s largest telescopes, and less frequently smallest, have to be updated periodically to ac-count for the drift. I even have a little Polari alignment scope with markers for the next 30 years so it will maintain its usefulness. Our galaxy not only rotates and changes, but it is moving in relation to all around it. Some things are moving toward us, but most are quickly moving away as the universe becomes ever larger.

Even time is not constant. If you could stand on the event horizon of a black hole you would witness time to the end of the universe in an instant. Even the astronauts going to the moon came back a fewnanoseconds out of sync with those who remained on Earth. The fabric of space and time bends and warps to all the movement.

Change. Its is the once constant as the universe forever moves in itscosmic dance.

PLEASE DO NOToffer yarn, string or human hair for birds to build nests! Every year we see both young and adult birds being admitted to wildlife re-habilitators due to this. It can sometimes result in the bird losing their foot or entire leg from the yarn/string/hair slowly tightening and cutting off circulation. DO NOT offer laundry dryer lint either. The lint collected in your dryer filter may seem like ideal nesting material, but it isn’t. It will soak up water and may be steeped with chemicals unhealthy for birds, such as remnants of detergent and softener. Also a warning about offering pet hair. Many of our pets are treated with specialty shampoos or tick/lice treatments which stay on the hair and can be harmful to birds collecting it for nest-ing material. DO NOT offer pet hair that has been exposed to any shampoo treatments or chemicals. Some safer alternatives from the National Wildlife Federation’s Blog... Twigs - For birds looking for small twigs, almost any tree or shrub you plant will do. When small branches or twigs fall from a shrub and gather at its base, leave them for birds to pick up, preferably in lengths under 4 inches. Greenery - Some birds line nests with soft plant matter. You can provide this accoutrement by growing catkin-bearing trees and shrubs such as cottonwood, maple, mulberry, willows, poplar and beech. Fluff - Many birds—hummingbirds spring to mind, but other songbirds as well—gravitate toward fluffy material, such as seeds with silky attachments designed to waft them on the wind or seed pods with a soft, hairlike covering. You can provide these items via cottonwood trees, lamb’s ear (ground cover), milkweed (also good for attracting monarch butterflies), honeysuckle, and clematis. Mud - If you have a pesky spot in your garden that refuses to grow anything but dirt, try adding a little water and see if you can grow mud. Mud is a favored nesting material for swallows and swifts and even the common robin. Dry grass - When you trim your yard, perhaps you can find a spot in your garden for laying out a selection of dried grass stems cut 2 to 4 inches long. Grass is a common ingredient in songbird nests, used by species from native sparrows to robins. Moss - If you have a shady spot in your yard, trying growing moss; with its velvety green growth, moss is a beautiful highlight for any moist garden and is a favored building material of some hummingbird species.
